Aaron-Wooi Yik back in training after Thailand Open win
KUALA LUMPUR: National men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik showed the mentality of champions by skipping rest and returning to training just hours after their Thailand Open 2025 triumph, as they gear up for the Malaysia Masters 2025.
Aaron said they landed in Kuala Lumpur at midnight and went to the Axiata Arena to test the court early this morning at around 7.30, ahead of the six-day Super 500 tournament which begins tomorrow (May 20).
'We didn't get enough sleep as we just returned home but we will rest later this evening. Tomorrow, we also have a day's rest because we only play on Wednesday. So, there is still time (to rest),' he told reporters at the Axiata Arena here today.
The 2022 world champions staged a strong comeback to win their maiden Super 500 title at the Thailand Open, defeating Denmark's William Kryger Boe-Christian Faust Kjaer 20-22, 21-17, 21-12 in Sunday's final.
The world number five will open their Malaysia Masters 2025 campaign against Taiwan's Chiu Hsiang Chieh-Wang Chi-Lin.
Aware of the high expectations from local fans following their second title this season, Aaron said they are bent on giving their best in front of the home crowd.
The 28-year-old also credited their recent upturn in performance to national men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi, who managed to improve their gameplay and guided them to two titles this season, including the Badminton Asia Championships 2025 in Ningbo, China, in April.
Meanwhile, Wooi Yik said that their early visit to the venue was crucial to familiarise themselves with the court conditions ahead of the tournament.
'We just came here to get some court feeling and draught conditions because today will be the last day to do so as the tournament starts tomorrow.
'It (test court session) feels great and, hopefully, we can give a great performance on Wednesday,' he said.
Wooi Yik also expects the vociferous home support to boost them to perform much better in the Malaysia Masters 2025.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have confirmed that national men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong will undergo knee surgery after scans revealed an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained during his opening-round match at the Malaysia Masters 2025 on May 21. BAM said in a statement that Tze Yong, 25, was forced to retire from the match against Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long due to pain in his knee and a thorough medical examination and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) have since confirmed a torn ACL requiring surgical intervention. Thinaah who defeated Indonesia's Lanny Tria Mayasari-Siti Fadia Ramadhanti at Istora Senayan in Jakarta today to reach the Indonesia Open quarter-finals. The world No. 4 dropped the first game but managed to silence the Istora Senayan crowd with an 18-21, 21-6, 21-17 win over world No. 20 Lanny-Fadia in 59 minutes. The Indonesian pair had humbled Pearly-Thinaah in the Malaysia Open at the Axiata Arena in January. "We were prepared, not only against them but the whole of Istora. It is always like this here, and we just stayed focused," said Thinaah. "We have belief in ourselves that we could do it while the coaches were also motivating us when we were trailing (in the third game)." Playing their fourth consecutive tournament since their Thailand Open victory, Pearly admitted that they were tired, but the will to win was high. "We were tired, but we trusted each other. The national men's doubles head coach said their loss to Denmark's world No. 16 Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard (21-13, 19-21, 21-18) was due to fatigue more than anything else. Aaron-Wooi Yik were playing their fourth consecutive World Tour tournament, in Jakarta. The world No. 3 duo had been on an extraordinary run, winning the Thailand Open, finishing runners-up at the Malaysia Masters and winning the Singapore Open before the Indonesia campaign. Notably, Aaron-Wooi Yik had beaten Kjaer-Sogaard in the Malaysia Masters quarter-finals and Singapore Open last week. "What Aaron-Wooi Yik have done is exceptional. They have been competing non-stop for the last four weeks from the Thailand to Indonesia Opens and have pushed themselves to the maximum," said Herry. "There is no way the Denmark pair could have beaten Aaron-Wooi Yik if not for their extreme fatigue.
