Raveena Tandon on alleged feud with Karisma Kapoor: It was classroom politics

India Today26-05-2025

Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor's alleged catfight on the sets of 'Andaaz Apna Apna' and 'Aatish' is a story often brought up by Bollywood celebrities on talk shows. In her recent vlog with Farah Khan, Raveena addressed the rumours, referring to the incident as 'classroom politics,' explaining that both she and Karisma were 'kids at that time.'Raveena, who appeared on Farah's YouTube channel, confronted the filmmaker for speaking publicly about her fights with Karisma. She said, "You went everywhere and said that fights were happening on set. When did we fight? What did I do? I was sitting with dancers who were my friends, and they were sharing non-veg jokes."advertisementFarah responded and stated, "Now everyone's kids are going to the same school, and we keep meeting on annual days." The actor replied, "We were also kids at that time. We were 20-21 years old. It was classroom politics, and we had to face that."
Farah had previously spoken about the incident during an episode of Koffee With Karan in 2007. When Karan Johar asked, "Which is the worst fight you have seen between two actresses?" Farah recalled, "I was once doing a song with Karisma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon, long ago, in a film called 'Aatish.' They were both having some kind of teenage spat. They were hitting each other with their wigs. They were wearing these wigs with plaits and beads in it. One was hitting, the other was stamping her foot with her heel. It was quite childish. I am sure they will laugh about it now."advertisementIn a recent interview with India Today, Aamir said, "We had a lovely time. Also, I have to say it was also a tough time because I was the only actor who used to come on time. Karisma aati thi toh Raveena chali jati thi. Bahut mushkil se woh film bani thi (Karisma used to come to shoot and leave, and then Raveena would come. It was a challenge to shoot it)."In one of her previous interviews with Lehren Retro, Raveena spoke about being replaced by Karisma in 'Sajan Chale Sasural.' She stated that, "I have always believed in healthy competition because that brings out the best in you. But I am not a cutthroat person, nobody can say Raveena got me removed from a project or Raveena refused to work with a newcomer. I have never done that kind of politics and groupism but others have blatantly done politics against me. I was supposed to do 'Saajan Chale Sasural' with David Dhawan and Govinda and they told me this later. I had even signed 'Vijaypath', I lost the film."Raveen and Karisma worked together in movies like 'Andaz Apna Apna' and 'Aatish.'Raveena was last seen in the show 'Karmma Calling', streaming on JioHotstar.Must Watch

When Raj Kapoor predicted that Dilip Kumar would pursue acting: ‘You should go into films, we both will go into films'

The camaraderie between actors Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor dates back to their early years, long before they became titans of Indian cinema. Not only did the two work in the same industry and support each other throughout their careers, but their connection began in childhood, rooted in a shared heritage and deep mutual respect. In an old interview with Lehren Retro, Dilip reminisced about their childhood in Peshawar and how Raj Kapoor was instrumental in encouraging him to pursue acting. In the interview, Dilip Kumar said, 'We come from the same town. I was born in Peshawar, he was born in Peshawar. Our families knew each other. And he was the one who always used to say, when we used to play the game of soccer, he was good goalkeeper and a very good referee, particularly when we used to play against British army teams he used to assert himself… all as a little boy. So he used to tell me you go into films, we both will go into films. But I said no, because that was not the thing in those times you would aspire to do. So I used tell him that you go, your father also does the same, so you should follow his footsteps.' Recalling that meeting in the same interview, Dilip said, 'He said I told you you will be here,' describing Raj's reaction with evident fondness. Reflecting further on their bond, the actor added, 'We had a lovely relationship.' Despite being close, it may come as a surprise to many that the two legends only acted together in one film: Andaz. Released in 1949, the movie was both a critical and commercial success, becoming a milestone in Hindi cinema.

Exclusive: Shweta Basu Prasad says she is scared of repeating herself as an actor

Actor Shweta Basu Prasad, who reprised her role as Lekha in 'Criminal Justice' Season 4, opens up about her evolving choices as an actor, her experience working alongside Pankaj Tripathi, and her constant quest to keep things fresh on screen. In an exclusive chat with India Today, the actress shares why reinvention matters to her and how collaboration shapes her started her journey in the industry at a young age, Shweta says her selection of roles has always come from a very personal space, 'I've been pretty lucky that good work has consistently come my way,' she says.'My choice of projects has always come from the lens of an audience. I'm a movie buff—I love watching films and series. So, when a new project is offered to me, beyond just looking at the team or the scale, it's really the story and character that matter most," she added. The actor believes in taking responsibility for the content she's a part of. 'My decision-making always starts with the question: Would I want to watch this? Because if I wouldn't, how can I expect others to? I'm asking people to subscribe, to spend their time and money—there's a certain responsibility in that. I have to genuinely believe in what I'm promoting.'advertisementWhen asked about working with Pankaj Tripathi and whether it has changed her approach, Shweta shares, 'I wouldn't say my performance has changed, but working with Pankaj ji has definitely added to my experience. There was a kind of nervous excitement, especially in Season 3 when my character was introduced. It wasn't just another scene—I was literally going head-to-head with him in court.'She adds, 'It was argument-heavy, dialogue-heavy, and technically demanding. But once I step into Lekha's costume and onto the set, that nervousness fades. Shweta takes a back seat, and Lekha steps in. The same happens with him—Pankaj ji disappears and Madhav Mishra takes over.'For Shweta, acting is deeply rooted in reaction and chemistry with co-actors. 'If I say something and I don't get the right reaction in return, my motivation for the next line falters. So, working with good actors really elevates your performance. I owe that to everyone I've worked with—Pankaj ji, Surveen, and the whole team.'The actress admits that her biggest fear is stagnation. 'Repeating myself is something I'm very conscious of—and scared of—as an actor,' she says. 'Cinema is a reflection of life, and life is full of surprises. Every day is different, and our art should reflect that.'advertisementShe emphasises the importance of reinvention in storytelling. 'There are many legal and courtroom dramas out there, but the key is in reinvention. It's not just about repackaging; it's about breathing new life into something. We are documenting the times we live in. What we created two years ago can't be replicated today—2025 brings a whole new lens. Even if it's the same story, it evolves with time. And that process of reinvention is far more exciting than mere repetition.''Criminal Justice' Season 4 is currently streaming on JioHotstar. You May Also Like
