Quebec television content is struggling to find its place in a media landscape where streaming platforms are multiplying, particularly with young people.
Among those who watch TV, less than one in four (23 per cent) watch mainly Quebec content.
That's according to the Quebec Survey on Cultural Leisure and Entertainment, conducted among 16,000 people aged 15 and over in 2024 and released by the Quebec Statistics Institute (ISQ) on Monday.
The survey finds that the younger the viewers, the less Quebec content they consume.
Only 14 per cent of people aged 30 to 44 watch mainly Quebec content, a proportion that drops to eight per cent among 15- to 29-year-olds.
However, the ISQ reports that almost everyone (97 per cent) watches television content in the province, when all distribution modes are factored in.
Quebec digital streaming platforms aren't the most popular, either.
The ISQ survey specifies that 73 per cent of people live in a household with a subscription to a non-Quebec streaming platform, compared to 28 per cent with a Quebec platform.
Traditional television still plays an important role, with 67 per cent of people subscribing to it.
The music landscape is similar to that of television, with 40.8 per cent of people who listen to music choosing mainly non-Quebec artists.
The trend is once again more pronounced among younger people: 69 per cent of 15- to 29-year-olds and 50 per cent of 30- to 44-year-olds listen mainly to music by non-Quebec artists, according to the ISQ.
In fact, 57 per cent of 15- to 29-year-olds listen mainly to songs in English.
In the literary field, 37 per cent of readers in the province say they mainly read books by non-Quebec authors, compared to 18.2 per cent who say they mainly read books by Quebec authors.

Beyonce wins first Emmy, for ‘Beyonce Bowl' halftime show

(AP Photo/Maria Lysaker, File) Beyonce has an Emmy to go with her 35 Grammys. Beyonce Knowles-Carter, her legal name, was listed as one of a half dozen people on a team that won outstanding costumes for a variety, nonfiction or reality show for 'Beyonce Bowl,' her Western-themed halftime show on Netflix's Christmas NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans. The show in her hometown of Houston brought the live debut of songs from her 'Cowboy Carter' album. The special Emmy is Beyonce's first. She has been nominated for 10 others without a victory. And it takes her halfway to an EGOT with her 35 Grammys. She still needs a Tony and an Oscar to complete the quartet. The award was among a handful of so-called juried Emmys announced Tuesday that are determined outside the regular voting process and given out by committees, with no official nominees. They are usually highly technical -- several involve individual elements of the animation process -- and rarely go to famous names. They are announced in advance and handed out at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony next month. Beyonce is also nominated for best variety special as a producer of 'Beyonce Bowl' and for best direction of a variety special. Her husband, Jay-Z, is competing against her as an executive producer of Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show.

‘I promise I will perform there': Chappell Roan chats more about possible Sask. show

Chappell Roan, centre, performs "Pink Pony Club" during the 67th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025, in Los Angeles. THE CANADIAN PRESS/AP - Chris Pizzello American singer/songwriter Chappell Roan is once again flirting with the possibility of coming to the land of the living skies for a show one day. In a conversation with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, the artist recounted how 'Saskatchewan' came to appear in her latest single, 'The Subway.' 'It rhymed,' she laughed. 'I can't remember if there was other options … we'd already used Boston in Femininomenon, and I was like, 'We need something 'on.'' A short snippet of Lowe and Roan's conversation was posted to social media Tuesday. The conversation revolved around reaction from the province in the wake of 'The Subway's' release and the use of location names in music. In the days leading up to the single's release, Tourism Saskatchewan had more than 230 new social media mentions and nearly 40,000 new social media interactions. Roan ended off the conversation by restating she has to perform in Saskatchewan – one day. 'I've never been there, but I promise I will perform there one day,' she said, before joking about the name of the provincial capital. Roan first performed 'The Subway' live last summer. However, Saskatchewan's shoutout gained attention in late July after Roan hired Regina production company Captive Media to create a teaser video for the song's official release. Last December, prior to the release of 'The Subway,' Roan told celebrity interviewer Nardwuar that she was looking at venues to try and play a show in the province. Roan's debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess did not enjoy immediate commercial success – but rather gained a cult following by early 2024 and was even nominated for Album of the Year at the 67th Grammy Awards. Roan's musical style has been described as being inspired by 1980s synth pop and 2000s pop, with heavy influences from her experiences in the queer scene. The same experiences have shaped her on-stage persona, modeled after drag queen aesthetics. - With files from Allison Bamford.
