Why are people boycotting Spotify?

ALBAWABA - Popular music streaming service Spotify has stirred controversy and boycott calls over the past couple of days due to a recent investment made by its CEO, Daniel Ek.
Things escalated when reports revealed that Ek recently invested $700 million in Helsing, a German AI company that develops software to enhance military and other equipment. His recent transaction sparked outrage on social media, with many human rights activists calling for a boycott while cancelling their subscriptions.
According to Middle East Monitor, several artists also urged for a boycott, with some taking their music down from the platform, including American indie-rock band Deerhoof. The band responded to the Eks' investment and said, "We don't want our music killing people."
Not only has Spotify been covertly pushing AI artists to 'reduce royalty payments' to real human artists — that extra profit is now being poured into an 'AI military startup' that will profit off bombing babies.

Moreover, many music content creators, such as Fantano, urged their viewers to do the same, with many of his followers providing Spotify users with alternatives such as Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, and Bandcamp.
A few pushed for the purchase of physical media from artists, claiming that it supports them more than what they get from streaming platforms.
Indepandant journalist, James Lee took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and wrote, "Not only has Spotify been covertly pushing AI artists to 'reduce royalty payments' to real human artists — that extra profit is now being poured into an 'AI military startup' that will profit off bombing babies."
Another wrote, "This is appalling. People should cancel their Spotify subscriptions immediately."

Trump sets 50-day deadline for Ukraine deal, threatens 100% tariffs on Russia

ALBAWABA- U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a sharp ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning that Russia will face crippling 100% tariffs, referred to as 'secondary tariffs', within 50 days if no agreement is reached to end the war in Ukraine. Also Read Trump promises big Russia reveal—Kremlin watches closely Speaking from the White House during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump expressed frustration over what he called a missed opportunity to end the conflict. 'We're very disappointed with them. I thought we'd have a deal months ago,' Trump said. 'If there's no deal in 50 days, we're going to impose very severe tariffs—100% secondary tariffs.' The new deadline marks an escalation in Trump's pressure campaign on Moscow. While he had previously floated the idea of secondary tariffs on Russian oil and exports, this is the first time he has attached a specific timetable to the threat. LIVE: President Trump Participates in the White House Faith Office Luncheonhttps:// — Commentary Donald J. Trump Posts From Truth Social (@TrumpDailyPosts) July 14, 2025 Secondary tariffs target not just Russia directly, but also countries and companies that continue to trade with it, particularly in energy. Analysts say such tariffs could hit nations like China, India, Brazil, and Turkiye, all of which remain major consumers of Russian fossil fuels. Trump's remarks also signal a shift in tone on Ukraine. He announced that the U.S. will deliver billions of dollars' worth of military equipment to NATO allies, purchased by European partners, who will then transfer the arms to Ukrainian forces. The move, combined with the tariff warning, underscores the president's growing impatience with Putin and signals a firmer stance on the conflict. The Trump administration is also reportedly considering supplying Ukraine with advanced U.S.-made JASSM cruise missiles to enhance their aging fleet of F-16 fighter jets. These long-range, radar-evading missiles could give Ukraine deeper strike capabilities inside Russian territory. While Trump has previously threatened secondary tariffs on countries importing oil from Venezuela and Iran, Monday's warning marks the most direct economic threat yet aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. Whether the pressure will bring Russia to the negotiating table remains uncertain, but the clock is now ticking toward a September deadline.

HBO unveils first look at new Harry Potter as J.K. Rowling reignites trans controversy

ALBAWABA - HBO reveals first look at new Harry Potter amid controversy. HBO has made the first official picture of child actor Dominic McLaughlin dressed as the new Harry Potter in the future reboot of the hugely popular wizarding series. The photo was released on Monday along with news that filming for the highly anticipated HBO Original series has started in the U.K., and the show will air in 2027. HBO Instagram profile The new show will be a fresh take on the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, who is also the show's executive producer. It will be different from the hit movies with Daniel Radcliffe as the boy wizard. The show has also cast new actors as Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton) and Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout). McLaughlin plays the show's main character. "It's amazing to see how talented these three different actors are, and we can't wait for everyone to see them work their magic together on screen," writer Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod said in May. Professor Dumbledore is played by John Lithgow, Professor McGonagall is played by Janet McTeer, and Hagrid is played by Nick Frost. Radcliffe, who said, "Transgender women are women," was one of the actors from Rowling's wizarding world who spoke out against her statements. It looked like Rowling was mad at Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint in a social media post that asked about stars who ruin movies for her right away. "Take a guess." She wrote on X in March, "Sorry, but that was too good to pass up," along with three smiling emojis.

New participants included Aramco's investment arm Wa'ed Ventures, government-backed, digital-innovation catalyst Takamol Ventures, and SparkLabs. Existing investors Rua Growth Fund and ARG also returned, doubling down on their long-term conviction in Lucidya's trajectory. Congratulations were delivered by H.E. Eng.
