2024-25 placements: UIET student bags highest package of ₹24.73 lakh
Even before sitting for his final BTech exams, Anuj Kumar, a computer science student at Panjab University's University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), has landed the highest placement package of the 2024-25 session — ₹24.73 lakh per annum.
Anuj, 22, who hails from Karnal, secured a job with Cisco in Bengaluru, where he is currently interning. He had cracked a national-level entrance test to secure the internship, which eventually led to the full-time job offer for which he expressed gratitude to the UIET placement cell.
But he isn't resting on his laurels. After gaining a few years of industry experience, Anuj has set his sights on pursuing an MBA from a top business school abroad.
As per data released on Monday for the 2024-25 placement session, a total of 325 UIET students have secured jobs so far — 78.4% of the batch — with an average CTC of ₹8.5 lakh per annum (LPA).
Top sectors for recruitment this year were information technology, consultancy and core engineering.
Notable recruiters included American Express Cisco, and ZS, while firms such as Viscadia, FutureFirst, and Hero Cycles participated in UIET's placement drive for the first time. Over 100 recruiters visited the campus this season.
PU vice-chancellor Renu Vig, who previously served as the UIET director, said, 'Now in its 23rd year, UIET has shown remarkable growth. Strong industry linkages with companies like Infosys, IBM and the Bharti Group, along with a vibrant alumni network, have played a key role.'
Numbers on the decline
Notably, the highest offer in UIET, even at graduate level, is neck and neck with the highest offer received by the University Business School (UBS), offering post-graduate courses, where the highest offer this year was for ₹25.11 LPA.
But over the years, the packages offered have reduced. In 2023, Amazon had hired four UIET students for ₹45 LPA after offering ₹32 LPA packages the previous year.
Even the average package this session — at ₹8.5 LPA — is lower than last session's ₹9.11 LPA and ₹8.72 LPA in 2023. Officials said since the placements had not concluded, the average may rise by the end of the session.

CSE seats sell like hot cakes in top colleges across Telangana
Hyderabad: Even though the EAPCET counselling is yet to begin, computer science engineering (CSE) seats in top colleges across Telangana under the management quota are selling like hot cakes. Depending on the popularity of colleges, a CSE seat is being sold for anywhere between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. While this amount is collected as a donation or one-time fee, students are still required to pay the prescribed tuition fee every academic year. "I paid 13 lakh as a donation to secure a seat for my son in BTech Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning course. Apart from donation, I also have to pay nearly Rs 2.5 lakh annually towards tuition and development fee," said a parent, who reserved a seat for his son in one of the top colleges in the city. He added that he went ahead with the payment because his son would not get a seat in a good college through counselling based on his rank. Another parent, who was looking for a seat in a women's college, said, "I was asked to pay Rs 11 lakh as a donation by one of the colleges on the city outskirts. We are exploring a few other options, but we are likely to pay the donation and reserve a seat, as we are keen on admitting our daughter to a women's college only." According to faculty, alongside CSE, there is a growing demand for AI/ML courses, with parents willing to shell out large sums for these course as well. "As AI is everywhere and has become a buzzword, many are enquiring about AI/ML seats as well. In fact, these seats are priced on par with CSE seats in many colleges," said Srinivas Varma, a senior faculty member and a representative of the Telangana Schools Technical Colleges Employees Association (TSTCEA). Both college managements and faculty pointed out that donations have not seen a steep rise because of competition from private and deemed universities. "They are offering CSE seats for about Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh per year without any donation. As a result, even private colleges are forced to keep donation amounts in check," said G Nagaiah from the engineering colleges managements association. He added that even above-average colleges are charging over Rs 10 lakh as a donation for CSE this year. This year, the Telangana Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee has to fix the fee for the next block period — three academic years. Many colleges are quoting higher fee based on their expectations while selling seats.

PU receives CSR grant of Rs 1cr to implement AI in materials analysis
Chandigarh: The sophisticated analytical instrumentation facility (SAIF/CIL) at Panjab University has received Rs 1 crore for implementing artificial intelligence (AI). The grant was given by the Vardhman Industrial Group as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) and was presented to PU vice-chancellor Prof Renu Vig. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to Prof Gaurav Verma, director of SAIF/CIL, plans are in place to integrate materials manufacturing capabilities with AI-driven analytical tools. The concept was presented to industries, with S P Oswal, chairman of the Vardhman Group, being the first to contribute CSR funds for enhancing these analytical capabilities for industrial applications. The transfer of funds to SAIF/CIL was facilitated by Amit Jain, head of CSR and AVP corporate projects at Vardhman, who expressed optimism about additional industrial establishments supporting this innovative initiative. SAIF/CIL at PU is dedicated to establishing an enabling environment for industrial product development, in accordance with the national vision of Viksit Bharat@2047. The centre features an established laboratory providing precise advanced analysis of materials and manufactured products. It is currently developing international-standard capabilities to examine technologies used in creating new manufacturing materials, including their metrology and quality control. The initiative aims to support manufacturing units, encourage startups, and promote entrepreneurship by utilising the substantial analytical and testing data generated through SAIF/CIL's various facilities. This data will be processed and enhanced using AI to expedite the development of new materials and products through advanced prototyping and design. SAIF/CIL will also concentrate on developing human resources by training scientists, technologists, and engineers through organised full-time and part-time internships and training programmes to maintain and expand these initiatives.
