Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma booked over ‘Chambal ke Dakku,' song about violence, at PU event that saw murder

Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma finds himself at the centre of a police investigation months after the Panjab University campus saw a murder the night he performed there. Masoom Sharma has been linked to several of the songs banned by the Haryana government. (X ) Sharma, who was one of the artistes on stage at the March 28 event, has been booked for allegedly violating performance guidelines and singing a song that, authorities say, may have fueled a violent altercation which led to a student's death. The performance, which was held on March 28 at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Sector 25, received the administration's permission with a clear mandate: no content promoting violence, drug use, liquor, or gangster culture. On the same night, a student named Aditya Thakur was killed on the university campus, reportedly after he raised concerns about the influence of such content on the audience. It was reported that Thakur, a second-year PU student, was allegedly beaten to death during the event by individuals from outside the campus. Three other students were injured in the brawl. With highest CTC of Rs 24.73 lakh per annum, 325 students get recruited at Panjab University's UIET

With the highest cost-to-company (CTC) reaching Rs 24.73 lakh per annum, as many as 325 students secured job offers this academic year (2024-2025 or FY25), in the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Panjab University (PU). The average CTC stood at an impressive Rs 8.5 lakh per annum, highlighting the institute's growing reputation among top recruiters across IT, consultancy, and core engineering sectors. The UIET is considered a premier engineering institute in north India, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. This year, as many as 325 students have been placed, with a placement percentage of 78.4. The highest CTC is Rs 24.73, the average Rs 8.5 LPA, with the top sectors being information technology, consultancy, and core engineering, attracting more than 100 recruiters as part of the placements. 'UIET has grown rapidly in the 23 years since its inception, and this year's placement result highlights its rising strength. Strong industry linkages with Infosys, IBM, and the Bharti Group, along with the support of a vibrant alumni network, have played a key role. I am very pleased to see UIET emerging as a leading hub for engineering talent in the country,' Renu Vig, vice-chancellor, PU, said. Sanjeev Puri, director, UIET, said that the stellar placements are a testament to UIET's continuous efforts to bridge the gap between academia and industry. 'We emphasise technical depth, soft skills, and interdisciplinary learning.' Sarbjeet Singh, training and placement officer, UIET, explained that the industry collaborations and career-oriented programmes empower students to meet the evolving demands of the corporate world. Anuj Kumar, who got a placement at Cisco, said the placement team's support helped him get his dream job, while Khushi Jain, who Walmart selected, says UIET gave her the confidence and skills to thrive in a global tech environment. Students like Jasjeet Singh and Riya Handa credit industry exposure, rigorous training sessions and real-world projects at UIET that gave them an edge during the recruitment process.

2024-25 placements: UIET student bags highest package of ₹24.73 lakh

Even before sitting for his final BTech exams, Anuj Kumar, a computer science student at Panjab University's University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), has landed the highest placement package of the 2024-25 session — ₹24.73 lakh per annum. Anuj, 22, who hails from Karnal, secured a job with Cisco in Bengaluru, where he is currently interning. He had cracked a national-level entrance test to secure the internship, which eventually led to the full-time job offer for which he expressed gratitude to the UIET placement cell. But he isn't resting on his laurels. After gaining a few years of industry experience, Anuj has set his sights on pursuing an MBA from a top business school abroad. As per data released on Monday for the 2024-25 placement session, a total of 325 UIET students have secured jobs so far — 78.4% of the batch — with an average CTC of ₹8.5 lakh per annum (LPA). Top sectors for recruitment this year were information technology, consultancy and core engineering. Notable recruiters included American Express Cisco, and ZS, while firms such as Viscadia, FutureFirst, and Hero Cycles participated in UIET's placement drive for the first time. Over 100 recruiters visited the campus this season. PU vice-chancellor Renu Vig, who previously served as the UIET director, said, 'Now in its 23rd year, UIET has shown remarkable growth. Strong industry linkages with companies like Infosys, IBM and the Bharti Group, along with a vibrant alumni network, have played a key role.' Numbers on the decline Notably, the highest offer in UIET, even at graduate level, is neck and neck with the highest offer received by the University Business School (UBS), offering post-graduate courses, where the highest offer this year was for ₹25.11 LPA. But over the years, the packages offered have reduced. In 2023, Amazon had hired four UIET students for ₹45 LPA after offering ₹32 LPA packages the previous year. Even the average package this session — at ₹8.5 LPA — is lower than last session's ₹9.11 LPA and ₹8.72 LPA in 2023. Officials said since the placements had not concluded, the average may rise by the end of the session.
