Vaccines for Women: What To Know At Every Stage From Teens To Pregnancy And Menopause
Vaccinations are not just for children, they're a lifelong shield for women's health. From the day a girl is born, through her teen years, during pregnancy, and well into menopause, the right immunizations can protect against serious, preventable diseases. They safeguard not only the woman herself but also her family and future generations. Dr Chhavi Gupta, Principal Consultant, Department of Infectious Disease, Adult Immunization and Travel Medicine, Yashoda Medicity & Kaushambi, Ghaziabad shares all you need to know:
From Birth Onward
A girl's vaccination journey begins immediately after birth, following the National Immunization Plan. In infancy and early childhood, key vaccines include BCG, Polio, DPT, Hepatitis B, and more forming the foundation of lifelong immunity.
Teen Years
Adolescence is the time to build extra layers of protection before adulthood:
HPV (Human Papillomavirus) Vaccine – Protects against cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases. Ideally given between ages 9–11, before sexual activity begins. Studies show it's effective up to age 45, especially for those never vaccinated before.
Pregnancy
During pregnancy, vaccines protect both mother and baby:
Influenza Vaccine – Prevents severe flu illness during pregnancy; safe in any trimester.
Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Acellular Pertussis) – Given between 35–37 weeks, protects newborns from potentially fatal whooping cough.
Rubella (MMR) Vaccine – Essential before conception if not received in childhood; prevents birth defects caused by rubella infection.
Menopause and Beyond
With age, immunity can decline, and infection risks rise:
Pneumococcal Vaccine – Prevents pneumonia and serious bloodstream infections; recommended at 65+, or earlier for those with chronic conditions.
Annual Influenza Vaccine – Vital for women over 50 to avoid severe flu complications.
Shingrix (Shingles/Herpes Zoster Vaccine) – Protects against shingles; recommended for adults 50+, even if they've had shingles before. May also offer cardiovascular and neurological benefits.
The Bottom Line
Staying updated on vaccines is one of the most effective, proactive steps a woman can take for her health. Whether you're a teenager, planning a pregnancy, or in your golden years, the right immunizations can prevent life-altering illnesses and help you stay healthy for the long run.

Subtle, Smart, And Effective: The Skincare Choices Indian Men Are Making
Indian men are no longer looking for skincare and beauty products that offer dramatic transformation. They view beauty and wellness as a practical, and research-based investment. Once considered a niche market, men's skincare in India is now one of the fastest-growing segments of the personal care industry. This shift reflects not just changing trends but a deeper understanding of grooming, wellness, and skin health. Across both cities and smaller towns, men are moving beyond aftershaves and basic face washes, embracing products and treatments that deliver visible, long-term results. Social media has been a major driver of this change. Influencers and dermatologists are using short videos and easy-to-understand content to address common skin concerns, from acne scars to pigmentation, making solutions accessible, normalised, and trusted. Tech-Driven Skincare Today's male consumers prefer results without long routines. This has fuelled demand for modern, non-invasive treatments that fit into busy lifestyles. Devices like Harmony XL PRO are gaining popularity for their versatility. 'It treats acne scars, uneven skin tone, visible veins, and dullness, using light-based methods suited for Indian skin. The sessions are comfortable, with no downtime, and results build gradually," says Dr. Sachin Dhawan, Chief Dermatologist, Skin'n Smiles Dermatology & Fortis Hospital, Gurgaon. Hair removal is another growing segment. Dr. Sadhana Deshmukh, Founder of Forever Young Dermatology, notes rising demand for long-term solutions to remove hair from the back, chest, and neck. 'The Soprano Titanium combines three laser wavelengths in one handpiece, making it effective for different skin tones and hair types. It's fast, nearly painless, and covers larger areas in each session – perfect for time-conscious clients." Confidence Over Cosmetics Unlike past perceptions, men are not chasing dramatic transformations. Instead, they favour subtle, steady improvements that enhance comfort and confidence. Skincare is now viewed much like fitness or nutrition – a practical, research-based investment in health. Clinics have adapted, offering private, welcoming spaces and tailored treatment plans that reflect male preferences. The focus is on effectiveness, ease, and comfort, with advanced devices becoming central to the experience. The Road Ahead The evolution of India's men's skincare market is about more than grooming. It's about self-respect, hygiene, and preventive care. With rising awareness and evolving technology, men are poised to take an even more active role in skin health. The future of this market will be defined not by indulgence, but by intelligent choices, science-backed treatments, and a holistic approach to looking and feeling one's best. When Ritual Meets Reflection: A New Take On Modern Wellness
Last Updated: While wellness products and rituals can create a sense of control and calm, the real mental wellness comes from a balance of shelf care and self care. Walk into any wellness store and you'll see rows of tinctures, serums, supplements, and herbal powders – all promising balance in a bottle. It's comforting to believe that healing can be measured in millilitres and tracked like a routine. But is buying wellness the same as living it? ' Wellness products can feel like control, but control is not the same thing as care," explains Mallika Timblo, founder of Terrapy. 'Shelf care may look like we're doing something, but true care begins when we slow down enough to listen." Shelf Care Isn't Shallow; But It's Not the Whole Story Shelf care – the skincare, the sprays, the carefully arranged wellness tools – isn't bad. It can be soothing. Rituals around products can create moments of calm. The problem comes when they become substitutes rather than support systems. 'Shelf care is Instagram-able. It can be tracked, reordered, and shared. But you can't TikTok your way into emotional regulation. You can't bottle boundary-setting." Mallika says. A good skin day may get likes, but choosing patience over reactivity rarely makes it online. Yet, it's these invisible choices that often shape our well-being most. The Invisible Work of Self-Care Unlike shelf care, self-care doesn't come with a label or a hashtag. It's small, unseen, and often unglamorous. 'Self-care is the wind-down before you scroll. It's the pause before saying yes to something that drains you," Mallika explains. 'It's the invisible maintenance that keeps you whole." For many, especially women, self-care is ongoing emotional labour that is necessary for survival but rarely acknowledged. It's less about looking good and more about staying grounded in a world that constantly pulls us away from ourselves. The Fix Isn't a Fix Without Feeling The wellness industry often asks: What should I take? But the real question is: What do I need to feel? 'That nightly supplement won't do much if your nervous system is depleted. No capsule will do your emotional labor for you. We've turned healing into hustling. But urgency isn't care – intention is," explains Mallika. When Shelf Meets Self The truth? It doesn't have to be either shelf care or self-care. The most powerful wellness happens when the two work together. 'Products are effective when they support self-care, not replace it," Mallika says. 'It's not either/or. It's both – done with clarity, not urgency." Shelf care can soothe the surface, but self-care sustains us from within. And when they meet, wellness becomes less about chasing fixes and more about truly living well. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
