Hyderabad fire that killed 17 likely caused by inverter short circuit, say investigators
Experts who assessed the site on Wednesday pointed to an electrical short circuit in the inverter circuit of the Krishna Pearls shop as the probable cause of the blaze.
Mahipal Reddy, Fire Engineer from Hyderabad and Nilesh Ukunde, Chief Investigator, Forensic Fire and Cyber Investigators, Nagpur, visited the premises to conduct a detailed inquiry. Their final report is expected to be submitted to the Fire department DG within two days. Preliminary findings suggest that although the regular power supply had been turned off, a routine practice, the inverter circuit remained active. The fire reportedly began in an LED display unit connected to this circuit, then spread rapidly through the shop.
Fire department DG Y Nagi Reddy said that the fire originated in the Krishna Pearls outlet and engulfed the entire floor. An air conditioning unit in the same room is believed to have caught fire or malfunctioned, contributing to its rapid spread. Combustible materials such as plywood furnishings, chairs and other items added to the intensity of the blaze.
At the time of the incident, 23 persons were present in the building—19 family members and four workers. The fire was first noticed at approximately 5 am by a worker, who alerted the rest of the occupants. While all family members were on the first floor, three workers attempted to extinguish the fire on the ground floor using buckets of water, as instructed by the family.
This continued for about 40 minutes before the situation worsened.

Could Have Bought Rolls-Royce If I Had Removed More Kidneys: DMK MLA's Remark Triggers Backlash
Last Updated: DMK MLA Kathiravan's comments on kidney surgeries at his Trichy hospital sparked outrage. BJP's Annamalai and AIADMK's Palanisamy condemned it, alleging a kidney-stealing racket. A statement by DMK MLA Kathiravan has sparked an outrage, with political leaders in Tamil Nadu suggesting a kidney-stealing racket is functional at his Trichy hospital. BJP leader Annamalai and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palanisamy strongly condemned remarks of DMK MLA from Manachanallur regarding kidney operation of people at his family-run hospital. Criticising the Manachanallur MLA, Annamalai shared a video on X showing Kathiravan discussing the profits made by kidney operations in his hospital and comparing it with the price of a Rolls-Royce car. In the video, Kathiravan said, 'After covering the medical expenses and doctor fees, I will have only 2 to 3 lakhs left (after each kidney operation). Do you know the price of my father's Rolls-Royce car? It is Rs 14.5 crore. The total kidney operations carried out by us is only 252, with the profit of Rs 2 lakh per kidney operation, when can I buy a Rolls-Royce car? I could have bought it only if I had removed all the kidneys from people in Thirupattur. My only concern is that no one realised I saved the lives of 252 people. The BJP leader accused the MLA's hospital of stealing kidney of poor weavers from Namakkal. He said that the DMK-led state government did not take any concrete action against the middleman. 'This is not a joke. Poor weavers from Namakkal were lured, their kidneys stolen, and the MLA himself admits in this video that his hospital made at least Rs 7.5 crore from this trade. Yet, the DMK Govt has taken no concrete action. Has their functionary Dravida Anandan, the middleman in this kidney theft racket, even been arrested?(sic)," he added. While former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy suggested people to avoid visiting clinics run by DMK members, saying they 'may lose your kidney". 'Don't even visit clinics run by DMK men even by mistake. You may lose your kidney. A group is prevailing which shows money to poor and is stealing organs. DMK government itself constituted a committee which investigated and discovered kidney stealing in a hospital belonging to DMK MLA. Was there action taken? NO," he said. He added that only the license for organ transplant in the hospital was cancelled, with no arrests made. 'The MLA says that for buying a Rolls Royce car, he might have to remove people's kidneys. His car is worth Rs 12 crore. He has admitted how many kidneys he needs to steal to buy the car, which is evident from the speech," Edappadi claimed. view comments First Published: August 14, 2025, 13:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Police Detain Hundreds of Protesting Sanitation Workers in Chennai
In a massive police crackdown hours after the Madras high court's directive, hundreds of protesting sanitation workers were detained in Chennai late on Wednesday night. Hundreds of sanitation workers have been protesting for over 13 days against the move to privatise their jobs. On Wednesday, 13 August, the Madras High Court asked the Tamil Nadu government to remove the protestors from outside the Greater Chennai Corporation headquarters. Platoons of police personnel were deployed to clear protesters from the site, citing disturbance to public peace by occupying footpaths and causing traffic congestion. The high court held that the sanitation workers were protesting in an unauthorised site. A tense situation prevailed outside the Chennai Corporation headquarters as protesters intensified over the police's attempt to drive out sanitation workers and their supporters, who have been protesting against the MK Stalin-led DMK government. The court order The high court had directed that occupying public footpaths without permission is not allowed, stating that it is creating a problem for the public, including traffic congestion, and ordered the state to clear the protest site. The court has also instructed the police to act with restraint and clarified that the workers can continue their agitation at officially designated protest venues after obtaining due permission. Despite the court's order, sanitation workers continued to occupy the site, insisting that the government should respond to their justified demands. Although the court had given them time until Wednesday evening to vacate, the agitating sanitation workers continued to sit in protest at the site. Their defiance led to police intervention and the forceful removal of nearly 800 sanitation workers and their supporters. The workers have been protesting against the Greater Chennai Corporation's (GCC) decision to privatise garbage collection in Zones V and VI since 1 August 2025 The privatisation plan, valued at Rs 2,500 crore, has led to significant concerns among the workers. They allege that the move has resulted in reduced wages, from Rs 23,000 to as low as Rs 15,000 and diminished benefits. Additionally, there are claims of increased workloads and a lack of safety equipment. The workers, who have been employed by the GCC for over 15 years, express frustration over the sudden policy change and the perceived erosion of their job security. The protest has also led to a pile-up of waste in Chennai, causing inconvenience to residents across the city.

SP, Cong, AAP slam UP govt over Balrampur gang-rape
Lucknow: Opposition parties on Wednesday lashed out at the Uttar Pradesh government over the alleged rape of a 21-year-old mentally challenged deaf-mute woman in Balrampur district, terming it a grim reflection of the state's law and order situation. Their attack on the government came even as the Balrampur police arrested two suspects following an encounter in the early hours of Wednesday, two days after the alleged incident. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, in a post on X, called the crime 'extremely heinous' and questioned the Adityanath-led government's claims on maintaining law and order. 'Will those making such claims be able to look the public in the eye and say something in this matter?' he asked. He demanded every possible relief, assistance, and medical care for the survivour, and said the culprits should be given the strictest punishment without any 'fake encounter show'. The Uttar Pradesh Congress, in a post on X, alleged that the accused abandoned the survivor in an unconscious state barely 20 metres from a police outpost after the gangrape. 'In CCTV footage from outside the SP's residence, it is clearly visible that the survivor was running to save herself while 5''6 men on bikes were chasing her,' it claimed. 'Yogi ji, this is the reality of your women's safety claims. If daughters are not safe near police stations and the SP's residence, imagine the reality in the rest of the state.' The party accused the government of being 'shameless and incompetent' and said criminals were acting with impunity. In the harrowing 16-second CCTV footage, the woman, seemingly barefoot, was seen running on a dimly lit deserted road and men chasing her on motorcycles. The Aam Aadmi Party also criticised the state administration, alleging that the incident shows that 'daughters are not safe in Yogi ji's rule.'
