Hyderabad fire that killed 17 likely caused by inverter short circuit, say investigators
Experts who assessed the site on Wednesday pointed to an electrical short circuit in the inverter circuit of the Krishna Pearls shop as the probable cause of the blaze.
Mahipal Reddy, Fire Engineer from Hyderabad and Nilesh Ukunde, Chief Investigator, Forensic Fire and Cyber Investigators, Nagpur, visited the premises to conduct a detailed inquiry. Their final report is expected to be submitted to the Fire department DG within two days. Preliminary findings suggest that although the regular power supply had been turned off, a routine practice, the inverter circuit remained active. The fire reportedly began in an LED display unit connected to this circuit, then spread rapidly through the shop.
Fire department DG Y Nagi Reddy said that the fire originated in the Krishna Pearls outlet and engulfed the entire floor. An air conditioning unit in the same room is believed to have caught fire or malfunctioned, contributing to its rapid spread. Combustible materials such as plywood furnishings, chairs and other items added to the intensity of the blaze.
At the time of the incident, 23 persons were present in the building—19 family members and four workers. The fire was first noticed at approximately 5 am by a worker, who alerted the rest of the occupants. While all family members were on the first floor, three workers attempted to extinguish the fire on the ground floor using buckets of water, as instructed by the family.
This continued for about 40 minutes before the situation worsened.

The total kidney operations carried out by us is only 252, with the profit of Rs 2 lakh per kidney operation, when can I buy a Rolls-Royce car? I could have bought it only if I had removed all the kidneys from people in Thirupattur. My only concern is that no one realised I saved the lives of 252 people. The BJP leader accused the MLA's hospital of stealing kidney of poor weavers from Namakkal. He said that the DMK-led state government did not take any concrete action against the middleman. Police Detain Hundreds of Protesting Sanitation Workers in Chennai
In a massive police crackdown hours after the Madras high court's directive, hundreds of protesting sanitation workers were detained in Chennai late on Wednesday night. Hundreds of sanitation workers have been protesting for over 13 days against the move to privatise their jobs. On Wednesday, 13 August, the Madras High Court asked the Tamil Nadu government to remove the protestors from outside the Greater Chennai Corporation headquarters. Platoons of police personnel were deployed to clear protesters from the site, citing disturbance to public peace by occupying footpaths and causing traffic congestion. The high court held that the sanitation workers were protesting in an unauthorised site. A tense situation prevailed outside the Chennai Corporation headquarters as protesters intensified over the police's attempt to drive out sanitation workers and their supporters, who have been protesting against the MK Stalin-led DMK government. The court order The high court had directed that occupying public footpaths without permission is not allowed, stating that it is creating a problem for the public, including traffic congestion, and ordered the state to clear the protest site. The court has also instructed the police to act with restraint and clarified that the workers can continue their agitation at officially designated protest venues after obtaining due permission. Despite the court's order, sanitation workers continued to occupy the site, insisting that the government should respond to their justified demands. Although the court had given them time until Wednesday evening to vacate, the agitating sanitation workers continued to sit in protest at the site. Their defiance led to police intervention and the forceful removal of nearly 800 sanitation workers and their supporters. The workers have been protesting against the Greater Chennai Corporation's (GCC) decision to privatise garbage collection in Zones V and VI since 1 August 2025 The privatisation plan, valued at Rs 2,500 crore, has led to significant concerns among the workers. They allege that the move has resulted in reduced wages, from Rs 23,000 to as low as Rs 15,000 and diminished benefits. Additionally, there are claims of increased workloads and a lack of safety equipment. Lucknow: Opposition parties on Wednesday lashed out at the Uttar Pradesh government over the alleged rape of a 21-year-old mentally challenged deaf-mute woman in Balrampur district, terming it a grim reflection of the state's law and order situation. Their attack on the government came even as the Balrampur police arrested two suspects following an encounter in the early hours of Wednesday, two days after the alleged incident. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, in a post on X, called the crime 'extremely heinous' and questioned the Adityanath-led government's claims on maintaining law and order. 'Will those making such claims be able to look the public in the eye and say something in this matter?' he asked.
