The Confédération Africaine de Football ('CAF') General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba has given preparations for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda ('CHAN') 2024 thumbs up with two weeks to kick-off.
Mosengo-Omba is visiting Kenya and Tanzania to meet with Local Organizing Committee ('LOC') of the kick-off on 02 August at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
Nairobi's Kasarani Stadium that has undergone major renovations thanks to investment from Kenya Government, will host the Final match of the competition on 30 August 2025.
Mosengo-Omba said: 'There is so much work and progress that has been made by the three countries; Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda over the last few months working closely with the CAF team that has been on ground for a while. I must commend the work of the three Governments and the Leaders of the three Member Associations from the three Nations. Today, I inspected the main stadium in Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium as well as some of the training facilities. We no longer have questions of the state of readiness, we are now just focusing on minor detail to ensure that we have everything in place by 02 August 2025. I will be visiting Tanzania tomorrow – the venue for the opening match.'
Mosengo-Omba was joined by Nicholas Musonye, Chairman of the LOC; Harold Ndege, FKF General Secretary and Evans Achoki, Secretary of Administration in the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.
In addition to the Closing Ceremony at Kasarani Stadium, Kenya is set to host all Group A matches at both the Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums.

From 1987 to now: Kenya's young journalists embrace CHAN 2024 spotlight

When Kenya last hosted a major continental sporting event—the All-Africa Games in 1987—many of the country's current sports journalists hadn't even been born. Some were toddlers, others only dreams in their parents' minds. Now, nearly four decades later, a new generation of reporters will live their own moment of history as Kenya co-hosts the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, alongside neighbors Uganda and Tanzania. For young and seasoned journalists alike, the month-long tournament is more than just another assignment—it's a powerful symbol of pride, opportunity, and long-awaited fulfillment. 'This is a big opportunity. It's been a long time coming and is a great build-up to AFCON 2027,' says Jeff Kinyanjui, veteran journalist and Head of Communications at Football Kenya Federation (FKF). 'This tournament offers local media personnel a platform to learn CAF operations and tournament coverage. It's also a chance to interact with some of the continent's brightest football talents—many of whom could go on to become world-class stars.' From Missed Chances to a Defining Moment Kenya came close to hosting major football events twice before—AFCON 1996 and CHAN 2018—but both were lost due to unpreparedness. CHAN 2024 now marks a redemptive moment not only for Kenyan football but also for its growing media ecosystem. 'It's not just about journalism,' Kinyanjui adds. 'It's about capacity building for the whole East African region and fostering continental connections. It has been a tough learning curve for most of us, beginning with the accreditation processes like accessing the media channel and all. "For most of our colleagues, this is their first time experiencing this. We have learnt a lot even before the first ball is kicked on the field.' A Long Journey from Radio to the Press Box Veteran broadcaster Daniel Wahome, now a senior editor at Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), recalls listening to the 1987 All-Africa Games on a radio at his grandfather's homestead. CHAN 2024 completes a full-circle moment for him. 'It's an incredible honor. Not just to witness this moment but to help shape it. This is also our chance to tell the East African story—our culture, our people—and share it with the world,' Wahome reflects. Covering Home Soil Feels Different Veteran editor Chris Mbaisi, former president of the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK), has reported from the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. But even with over 25 years in the profession, CHAN 2024 strikes a special chord. 'There's nothing quite like covering a tournament your own country is hosting. It's personal. It's a moment of pride—and a chance to tell Kenya's story our way,' Mbaisi says. A Generation's First Big Break For 25-year-old digital media reporter Tabitha Makumi, CHAN 2024 is more than just a tournament—it's a career milestone. 'It feels surreal to walk into a stadium and cover these games as a journalist,' she says. 'This is a chance to showcase young Kenyan talent and tell Africa's football story to the world. It also allows us to exchange ideas with colleagues from across the continent. For example, I get to learn how a journalist from Nigeria connects with their audience, and share how we do it here and so on. "It's a beautiful blend of storytelling cultures. Over and beyond, it will be a proud moment for me to put it in my CV that I was part of this CHAN.' A Celebration of Storytelling and Continental Culture CAF has accredited over 250 Kenyan journalists, with nearly 800 media professionals expected to cover the tournament across the three host nations. For Kenya's media, CHAN 2024 represents more than football—it's a generational leap, a cultural statement, and a shared moment of African unity.

Nigeria quietly build belief under Chelle ahead of CHAN 2024 test

As the continent braces for kick-off in the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, Nigeria's locally-based Super Eagles — better known as the Home Eagles — are quietly putting the final touches on a campaign they believe could end in a historic first title. In Zanzibar, far from the spotlight, Éric Chelle's men have been honing a style built on discipline, collective spirit, and a hunger to rewrite Nigeria's CHAN story. Drawn into Group D alongside defending champions Senegal, Congo, and Sudan, Nigeria face a daunting test. But from inside the camp, a quiet confidence is emerging. Midfielder Harrison Austin, a standout for Nigeria Professional Football League side Ikorodu City, has become something of a barometer for the team's mental and tactical progression. After a goalless draw in a warm-up game against Zanzibar, Austin reflected on the squad's preparations — and his own growth under Chelle. 'As a team, we always talk about the competition and about improving,' Austin said. 'The coach sees our lapses, points them out, and we make corrections — even among ourselves, we hold short meetings to review how to do better. And it shows.' Éric Chelle, appointed to replace the coach who qualified the team, has wasted no time in making his mark. Known for his calm approach and tactical clarity, the Franco-Malian coach has empowered players like Austin to grow in confidence and understanding. 'He gives room to ask questions,' Austin explained. 'Even when I don't immediately understand his instructions, he's patient. That gives me the freedom to learn and improve. It's easier to pick up what he wants.' With the team's tactical identity sharpening and the camaraderie growing stronger, the Home Eagles are turning ambition into belief. Austin, one of the squad's most articulate voices, isn't shy about the group's aspirations. 'I love the spirit of the guys. We've all promised ourselves to give everything to win the trophy. It's our collective target.' Nigeria have come close before — most notably finishing runners-up in 2018 — but the elusive CHAN crown has so far evaded them. Now, with Chelle steering the ship and a fresh generation of hungry players on board, they're ready to mount another charge. Their journey begins in the high-stakes atmosphere of Group D, where they must contend with three-time participants Congo, resurgent Sudan, and current holders Senegal. It's a group of champions and challengers — and Nigeria must prove they belong. With kickoff just days away, Chelle and his players know they won't have the luxury of growing into the tournament. They must start strong, stay disciplined, and keep chasing the dream that has driven them throughout their low-profile but focused preparation. The Home Eagles have one message for their fans back home: they are ready.

How TotalEnergies CAF CHAN catapulted Morocco's El Kaabi to global stardom

With just days to go before the start of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, it is timely to remember how one man's extraordinary 2018 campaign turned previous obscurity into international acclaim. Morocco striker Ayoub El Kaabi emerged from the competition reserved exclusively for players active in their domestic leagues in Africa, igniting a career that would see him become one of Europe's most prolific finishers, earning him the Best Player and Top Scorer of the Greek top-flight as well as winning UEFA Europa Conference League Best Player award. His performance at the TotalEnergies CHAN 2018 in Morocco as the Top Scorer and Best Player transformed him from a domestic unknown into a sought‑after striker, launching a journey through China, Turkey and finally to European glory at Greek giants Olympiacos. His story proves that CHAN is more than a continental competition, it is a player's gateway to the world stage. TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2018: The explosive breakthrough El Kaabi's breakthrough came in January 2018 when Morocco hosted the TotalEnergies CAF CHAN. He lit up the tournament with an astounding nine goals in just six matches, becoming the all‑time single‑edition top scorer in the competition's history and earning both the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament awards. Morocco won the title with a 4–0 final victory over Nigeria, and El Kaabi capped the night with his goal in the 73rd minute, sealing debut glory at home. 'I scored nine goals in the tournament, and that moment changed everything for me,' El Kaabi recalled, reflecting on his breakthrough. His nine-goal haul remains the highest by any player in a single TotalEnergies CAF CHAN edition. El Kaabi's rise began far from the glitz of football academies. Born in Casablanca in 1993, he left school at 15 and worked as a carpenter, juggling labour and weekly amateur matches. His big domestic chance came with Racing Casablanca, where his natural goalscoring ability – 25 goals in 33 second‑division matches – earned him a move to RS Berkane in Morocco's top flight. But it was at TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2018 that El Kaabi announced himself to the world with the global football lens focused on Africa's competition designed for just home-based players. Scoring nine in six games, including a hat‑trick against Guinea and the winner in the 4–0 final over Nigeria, earned him the competition's best personal awards. 'I learned that one can only reach success through hard work,' El Kaabi said afterwards. Scouts circle after CHAN triumph The Moroccan striker's performances proved that TotalEnergies CAF CHAN could be a showcase for unheralded talent to break through, and El Kaabi was the poster child. His exploits immediately attracted international attention. Spanish media reported interest from Atlético Madrid, while clubs across Europe began monitoring the Moroccan striker. Indeed, the interest was not just focused in Europe but several clubs in the Middle East and other parts of Asia also expressed interest in the budding attacker. The domestic league in China was then on the rise with several clubs in the top-flight also active in the transfer market by competing with European clubs for the best talent in the world. Career path: Domestic rise to Continental acclaim El Kaabi's club career was destined to accelerate following the interest from clubs across the globe. He subsequently moved from Morocco's RS Berkane to Hebei China Fortune on a lucrative deal. Though the move proved mixed for development, it established him financially. He returned to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in 2019 and topped the domestic scoring charts in 2020-21 before moving to Turkey's Hatayspor, where he scored 26 goals in 53 matches. In summer 2023 came a turning point: his transfer to Olympiacos in Greece. Since then, his impact has been seismic. In the 2023-24 UEFA Conference League, El Kaabi scored 11 goals in nine matches, including a remarkable hat‑trick against Aston Villa in the semi-final , the first ever in that round of the competition, and then the winning goal in extra time of the final versus Fiorentina. It was Olympiakos' first major European title. El Kaabi's 11 knockout goals set a UEFA record, surpassing legends like Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao and finishing as the Conference League Top Scorer and Player of the Competition. He also set other records: the first African to hit double-digit goals in that UEFA tournament, and most knockout‑stage goals in a single European season. Over the entire European campaign, the Moroccan finished with 14 goals (combining Europa League and Conference League), becoming the most prolific African in a single UEFA club season, and the first non‑European to score 14 goals or more in a campaign since Lionel Messi in 2011-12. Present day: Olympiacos icon, European star By early 2025, El Kaabi had become Olympiacos's all‑time leading European competition scorer, reaching 21 goals in just 26 matches, surpassing the mark previously held by Youssef El Arabi. The Moroccan continued his fine form: he won the Greek Super League with Olympiacos and finished the season as Super League top scorer, also named Best Foreign Player and Player of the Season, and firmly established himself among Africa's elite forwards. Olympiacos manager Jose Luis Mendilibar described him as: 'He's a special player. His hunger and focus drive this team forward.' And while the World Cup eluded him in 2022, he responded by bagging a World Cup qualifying hat‑trick in June 2024, taking his national team goals to 16 in 42 caps. CHAN as a platform: Opening doors for others Today, aged 32, El Kaabi is firmly among Europe's elite strikers, with records, titles and accolades to prove it, but the TotalEnergies CAF CHAN remains the springboard that launched his legend. His journey remains a testament to the competition's transformative power. A competition reserved for players in local leagues, it offered him a global platform at age 24. As TotalEnergies CAF CHAN PAMOJA 2024 approaches in East Africa, nations across Africa will look to replicate that narrative. Players currently competing in the competition have similar aspirations, use the tournament to shine, attract interest, and launch careers to become global superstars.
