The Ordinary's new serum ‘works magic' on signs of ageing with this secret ingredient

Independent31-01-2025
Hardworking skincare brand The Ordinary needs no introduction. It is renowned for taking innovative skincare ingredients and making them accessible to all. The skincare disruptor's latest launch is no exception: a growth factor face serum that addresses multiple visible signs of ageing at a fraction of its competitors' prices, but does it deliver? We were one of the lucky ones to test it out before it landed in stores.
Fast emerging as the next buzz-worthy skincare ingredient, growth factors are proteins that naturally occur in our skin cells. Simply put, they act as messengers to various mechanisms in the skin signalling it to repair and rejuvenate. They do so by stimulating skin cell turnover, as well as collagen and elastin production – the fundamentals of keeping skin smooth and firm.
With age, these growth factors deplete our skin so it's less able to repair itself from environmental damage like UV light and pollution, which we know leads to premature signs of ageing. Essentially, by replenishing these growth factors old skin cells start to act like younger skin cells again.
The science isn't new – growth factors were first discovered by scientists in the 1950s who went on to win a Noble Prize for their work, and luxury skincare brands started infusing their formulas with the regenerating ingredient in the 1990s. But what is new, is having access to this advanced science for the first time at a bargain price.
Typically, it's only high-end and hugely expensive skincare brands that carry growth factor skincare, excluding The Inkey List's offering, though it's hard to compare when it's not as highly concentrated. But The Ordinary's new serum comes with a bargain price tag of £13.50.
As you can imagine this is a much-anticipated launch for beauty editors and skincare obsessives alike, and we got our hands on it to see if it really works. Read on to hear our honest thoughts and how to snap up the serum for an all-time low price.

Beauty therapist hails Medik8's hyaluronic acid serum ‘unbelievable' for anti-ageing

If you're looking for skincare to hydrate your skin and get rid of signs of ageing, Medik8's hyaluronic acid serum checks all the boxes, with shoppers hailing it 'worth the money' When it comes to skincare, there are two things we almost always want from our routine; to leave our skin hydrated, and to help keep the signs of ageing at bay for as long as possible. If that sounds familiar, then Medik8's Hydr8 B5 Intense might be exactly what your skincare routine has been missing. The hyaluronic acid serum is a super-charged version of the brand's best-selling Hdry8 B5, with added ingredients to give your skin an instant boost of moisture within 24 hours. You can pick up a full size 30ml bottle for £59, or a travel-friendly 8ml size for £20, with shoppers praising it as 'definitely worth the money' in reviews. The main ingredient in the Hydr8 B5 Intense serum is multi-weight hyaluronic acid, which helps to attract and retain more than 1000 times its own weight in water. It draws moisture from the lower layers into the upper ones, creating a nourished, supple and hydrated glow. What sets this apart from other hyaluronic acid serums is the addition of other ingredients, including vitamin B5 which helps your skin to retain moisture and regenerate new cells for a plumper look. It's also charged with Natural Moisturising Factors (NMFs) like glycerin, five different amino acids, lactic acid and creatine to maximise hydration. You'll also find plenty of other antioxidant ingredients which help encourage collagen production and prevent moisture from breaking down in your skin. To get the most out of the Hydr8 B5 Intense serum, Medik8 recommends applying six drops to freshly cleansed skin morning and night – and don't forget your neck and décolletage. If you're not quite ready to spend £50 on the Medik8 serum, you could also snap up the La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum with Hyaluronic Acid instead. The serum is £45 for a 30ml bottle, and contains both hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 to hydrate and plump skin. Alternatively, The Ordinary's Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (with Ceramides) is perfect for anyone on a tight budget, with a 30ml bottle priced at just £8.80, whilst a larger 60ml bottle is £15.50. It contains five forms of hyaluronic acid to help visibly plump and smooth skin, with pro-vitamin B5 to lock in moisture and ceramides to boost your skin barrier. However, Medik8 shoppers seem pretty convinced that the Hydr8 B5 Intense serum is worth splashing out on, with one saying: 'From a beauty therapist of 40 years, this product is unbelievable. So nourishing & anti aging, your skin will glow.' Another agreed: 'I Couldn't live without this serum! It has become a staple in my routine and the immediate effects are phenomenal. I love how quickly it absorbs into the skin leaving it hydrated, feeling firm, plump and glowy! I've had no dry skin since using this serum and it's one of my favourite medik8 products. Highly recommended and definitely worth the money.' Whilst a third said: 'Lovely, easy to apply product that has kept my skin calm and hydrated. Feels beautiful on the skin and settles quickly for the rest of the routine to be applied.' However, the Hydr8 B5 Intense serum wasn't such a big hit with everyone, with one writing: 'I think this is a MID products compare to others from Medik8. I didn't see lots of improvement and I finished all the bottle. I think you can find better hydration serums for less less money.' With a second chiming in: 'The feel of this serum is lovely but it doesn't seem to do that much for me. I do have quite dry tight skin in the winter so it was quite good for layering but I wouldn't repurchase.' However others can't get enough. One happy reviewer wrote: 'I have used this for a year or more and can see definite improvement on fine lines. It's light and silky does not linger on the skin so quickly absorbed, would highly recommend.' Another agreed: 'My skin has become more elastic and smooth, it glows and has a beautiful healthy look.'

Is Facetheory's £20 anti-ageing cream too good to be true? I put it to the test

It's very hard to find an affordable anti-ageing cream. As a beauty writer, I know first-hand that prices for good anti-ageing products usually start at around £50, and are often £90 or higher for a measly 50ml formula. But when I spent weeks testing the best anti-ageing creams, one stood out for its remarkable efficacy at a low price. Facetheory's glow-C daily moisturiser with SPF 30 is remarkably good at protecting and rejuvenating skin. For those unfamiliar with Facetheory, the British skincare brand's products are vegan, claim to use backed-by-science ingredients, and the formulations come at relatively affordable prices – it's a brand competing in the same niche as The Ordinary and The Inkey List. The beauty brand has recently had a sleek redesign, with the glow-C face cream now coming in a recyclable aluminium tube. The moisturising formula is a bestseller for the brand, and features the dream team of vitamin C with SPF, but for just a fraction of the price of many similar products. I decided to give this cream another look under closer scrutiny, to see if this budget cream still offers excellence at a fair price point – and if the fancy new redesign is hiding any drops in quality. How I tested I put the day cream to the test for a month, during sunny heatwaves with high UV levels. This enabled me to score the product on how well it protected my skin, as well as its skin-renewing qualities. During testing, I considered a range of key criteria: Formula: I assessed the key ingredients to determine which skin types would be suited to this formula. Application: I noted how easy the product was to apply, and how it felt and looked on the skin. Results: I considered any immediate effects and long-term benefits. ‘I destroyed my skin barrier but this peptide-fuelled night cream healed it in days'

Our head of beauty shares her top Medik8 night cream for dry and damaged skin, as the hero buy hits a summer sale I knew I'd messed up the moment I rinsed off the peel. My skin felt hot, tight and angry, like I'd potentially scorched the top layer clean off. What was meant to be a quick pre-summer holiday glow boost had left me red and painfully dry. In a moment of mild panic, I reached for Medik8's Advanced Night Restore, the night cream I've kept in my cupboard for these exact type of emergency events. Packed with peptides, ceramides and antioxidants, it's a formula that goes beyond just moisturising. It's actively rebuilding. Medik8's signature 'midnight repair complex' blends ingredients like dragon fruit extract, saskatoon berry and restoring peptides that work in synch with the skin's natural overnight repair cycle. There's also niacinamide to calm and a blend of lipids to strengthen and replenish the barrier, which, let's be honest, mine was now sorely lacking. Within two nights, the sandpapery texture started to smooth out and the redness faded. My skin stopped stinging whenever I applied cleanser– always the telltale sign of damage. By day four, I'd gone from flaky and sensitised to actually hydrated, bouncy and even. Both my skin and I could breathe a sigh of relief. I now recommend this to anyone whose barrier is hanging by a thread, or who simply wants a deeply nourishing night cream that doesn't overwhelm or flare up skin conditions like eczema, perioral dermatitis or rosacea. Normally £60, it's currently in Medik8's summer sale, making it a more affordable £48 for a short while. Trust me and my sore face, it's worth the price. Since my own results have been so good, I wondered whether others have experienced similarly impressive results. A quick scan of the product page told me yes, I'm in good company. One reviewer writes: 'A beautiful cream which has transformed my skin following extensive damage to my skin barrier, thankyou!' A second adds: 'Love this cream- super nourishing and rich without being greasy. Helps me skin look plump and hydrated in the morning,' with a third saying: 'I like this cream very much. It is light and not too greasy and it smells nice. It makes my skin glow and gives it protection overnight.' 'I love the texture of this cream. I usually use my liquid peptide serum before and I apply Advanced Night Restore. These two are my favourite combination. Great texture, absorbs quickly and makes my skin feel hydrated,' pens a fourth. While I have no negative things to say about the cream, other than its usual RRP being a little high at £60 for a 50 ml tub, I do think you can get good repairing results with other lower-cost products as well. If it's a peptide-packed formula you're looking for, The Inkey List's Peptide Moisturiser is a good alternative for £16. With a dual peptide formula that aims to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and balance the skin's natural oil levels, it has plenty of calming goodness for those, like me, who have overdone their actives. Plus, if you shop it this week, you can use the code SUMMER20 to get 20% off it.
