Angels slip past Diamondbacks 6-5 on d'Arnaud's RBI single in ninth

Washington Post3 days ago
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Travis d'Arnaud hit a pinch-hit RBI single down the left-field line in the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 6-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.
Logan O'Hoppe was hit by a pitch with one out against left-hander Kyle Backhus (0-1) before Luis Rengifo singled and d'Arnaud delivered in place of Gustavo Campero.
Zach Neto and Yoan Moncada each hit home runs in the first inning for the Angels, while Nolan Schanuel and Rengifo each had three hits as LA improved to 7-3 against NL West teams this season.
Randal Grichuk hit a pair of home runs and drove in three runs as the Diamondbacks dropped to 3-7 since July 2.
Arizona right-hander Ryne Nelson gave up four runs on seven hits with four walks over four innings, while Los Angeles left-hander Tyler Anderson gave up four runs on eight hits with two walks over five innings.
Neto and Moncada powered a four-run first inning for the Angels, while the Diamondbacks followed with a four-run second that included Grichuk's home run and a two-run double from Alek Thomas.
After Rengifo gave the Angels a 5-4 lead with a double in the fifth inning, Grichuk tied the game with another home run in the eighth.
Kenley Jansen (3-2) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Angels.
Angels catcher O'Hoppe, who was shaken up when Thomas scored on a slide in the third inning, walked and stole second base with two outs in the fifth ahead of Rengifo's RBI double.
Neto has seven leadoff home runs, all this season, and tied the franchise record previously held by Brian Downing (1987).
Diamondbacks RHP Zac Gallen (7-9, 5.15 ERA), who is much improved over his last two starts, will take the mound Saturday opposite Angels LHP Yusei Kikuchi (3-6. 3.02), who is his club's only All-Star.

3 Rookie WRs To Draft In Your Fantasy Football League

HENDERSON, NEVADA - JUNE 10: Jack Bech #18 of the Las Vegas Raiders runs with the ball during ... More mandatory minicamp at the Las Vegas Raiders Headquarters/Intermountain Healthcare Performance Center on June 10, 2025 in Henderson, Nevada. (Photo by) After talking about three rookies to draft in your fantasy football league in my last article, let's narrow it down to wide receivers specifically. For this exercise, we'll be avoiding players that I've already talked about in-depth. That excludes Tetairoa McMillan, Jayden Higgins, and Kyle Williams from this list. You can find my thoughts on them in the linked articles. For this article, we'll talk about wide receiver sleepers specifically, as all three players are drafted later than the WR40 using ADP from FantasyPros. Let's dive right into it! 3 Rookie WRs To Draft In Your Fantasy Football League Let's not forget that Matthew Golden was a 1st round draft pick this past season. Being selected 23rd overall by the Green Bay Packers, the exception is that Golden will go out there and contribute from day one. Golden is stepping into a wide receiver room that is in need of a WR1. Last season, Jayden Reed had the most receiving yards with 857, but he played in the slot for 76.5% of his snaps (per PFF). This signals that Reed is set up to be a complementary wide receiver as opposed to being an outside X receiver that could dominate that team's target share. The next closest wide receiver was Christian Watson, who tore his ACL last year. Golden plays with extreme fluidity, strong hands, and overall crisp route running. Getting the potential WR1 on an offense with Jordan Love, who had 4,159 yards in 2023, is a great value. CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS - OCTOBER 12: Pat Bryant #13 of the Illinois Fighting Illini runs the ball ... More against the Purdue Boilermakers at Memorial Stadium on October 12, 2024 in Champaign, Illinois. (Photo by) Not many people know about Pat Bryant, and you can use that to your advantage. Bryant was a day two draft pick by the Denver Broncos, whom I was able to watch play at Illinois. While Bryant has below-average NFL speed, he runs his route smoothly, and he's a monster in contested catch situations. Bryant won't blow by any defenders, but he does just about everything else at a high level. The situation for Bryant is very advantageous as well. Bo Nix led all rookies in passing yards, and he's set for a big year two. Not only is Nix a good quarterback who can get Bryant the ball efficiently, but there's little target competition. Outside of Courtland Sutton, the Broncos didn't have another receiver with over 550 yards. Bryant has a chance to step into this offense on day one and be fantasy productive. The last player on this list for fantasy football is Jack Bech. In the NFL Draft, Bech went in the 2nd round as the Las Vegas Raiders selected him. While the Raiders are going to be run-heavy following the selection of Ashton Jeanty, they got a big quarterback upgrade. Geno Smith is much better than what the Raiders have had in the past, and in 2024, he threw for 4,320 passing yards. Bech played his final college season at TCU, where he showed off elite route running, great toughness, and the ability to finish catches through contact. Brock Bowers is the clear number one receiving threat, but there's a chance that Bech could have a better season than Jakobi Meyers. While it's not super likely, Bech is extremely talented, and he should be the WR3 at the very least. If that's the case, there's a world where Bech could be a solid FLEX option on your fantasy football team if Smith is able to throw for over 4,000 yards even with Jeanty in town.

Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin Earns Surprising Ranking in College Football 26

Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin Earns Surprising Ranking in College Football 26 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Ole Miss football program has been revitalized under head coach Lane Kiffin since his hiring before the 2020 college football season. He has won 10 or more games on three occasions, including a school record 11 wins in 2023. Advertisement This success has largely been predicated on finding elite transfers in the portal each offseason, like quarterback Jaxson Dart, defensive linemen Walter Nolen and Princely Umanmielen, as well as cornerbacks like Trey Amos. However, Kiffin also developed homegrown talent such as linebacker Suntarine Perkins and running back Quinshon Judkins, who was a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Ole Miss head coach Lane Davis-Imagn Images All of these factors have given Kiffin a strong reputation in the world of college football. On Monday, EA Sports' College Football 26 video game reflected this reputation with its strong rating of Kiffin. Advertisement Kiffin is the 10th-highest ranked coach in the game, and one of just 11 with an A+ prestige rating. He has a level of 61, which is slightly ahead of Southern California's Lincoln Riley, who has a 59. Just ahead of Kiffin are Penn State's James Franklin at 64, Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman at 63, and LSU's Brian Kelly and Alabama's Kalen DeBoer at 62. Clemson's Dabo Swinney and Georgia's Kirby Smart are the top-rated coaches in the game, both of whom earned an A+ prestige and a level of 80. The next-best coach is Ohio State's Ryan Day, a level 72. Ole Miss opens their season at home against the Georgia State Panthers on August 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. ET at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi. ESPN Facing Backlash After Changing LeBron James, Luka Doncic Report

ESPN Facing Backlash After Changing LeBron James, Luka Doncic Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Speculation around LeBron James' future in Los Angeles continues to swirl, despite the four-time NBA champion opting into his player option for the upcoming season. Even after another strong individual campaign, reports of tension between James and the Los Angeles Lakers have only grown louder in recent weeks. Advertisement That tension reportedly stems from the franchise's recent pivot to build around superstar guard Luka Doncic. According to a recent report from ESPN's Brian Windhorst and Ramona Shelburne, the Lakers' front office sees Doncic as their long-term centerpiece, which has led some close to James to feel the team isn't fully valuing what he's done for the organization since arriving in 2018. Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23) and guard Luka Doncic (77).Jason Parkhurst-Imagn Images In the report, Windhorst and Shelburne also noted that James hadn't even been notified when the Buss family agreed to sell a majority stake in the Lakers to Mark Walter on June 18 — while Doncic had been given a heads-up and publicly congratulated the move. The original story implied that James was blindsided by the sale and suggested it was another example of the Lakers prioritizing their new star over the 22-time All-Star, who turns 41 in December. However, after the article was published, ESPN quietly updated the piece, adding that 'sources said James was notified of the sale, via his representation,' but chose not to post about it publicly. Advertisement The walk-back immediately sparked backlash from fans who accused the network of trying to manufacture unnecessary drama. 'They can't just get away with this man. They also lied about the Lakers not offering LeBron a contract,' one fan noted. 'I TOLD Y'ALL THESE GUYS WERE LYING,' another fan said. 'Why are we still calling those 'media'?' a fan questioned. 'ESPN are just a bunch of liars looking to create narratives to generate clicks,' another fan added. 'Brian Windhorst has straight up lied on Bron's name for a long [expletive] time,' another fan posted. '@ramonashelburne spreading lies about the lakers as usual.. why Ramona?' another fan wrote.
