Atlanta Braves at Texas Rangers odds, picks and predictions
Season series: First meeting; Braves won 2-1 in 2024
The Braves opened a series at home with the San Francisco Giants Monday with a 9-5 win, but Atlanta was outscored 18-3 in a pair of losses Tuesday and Wednesday. The Braves are just 1-4 in the past 5 games, with the Over going 7-1-1 in the past 9 outings.
In Wednesday's 9-3 loss to the Giants, OF Jurickson Profar was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, while DH Drake Baldwin had a double in 5 at-bats with 2 RBIs.
The Rangers swept the Athletics in Arlington Monday through Wednesday, outscoring the A's 15-5 as the Over cashed in 2 of the 3 wins. Texas is 6-1 in the past 7 games, while the Under is 5-2 in that span.
On Wednesday, Texas won 2-1 against the A's, and SS Corey Seager was the hitting hero, going 2-for-4 with a double, solo home run and an RBI, while C Jonah Heim was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.Rangers RHP Nathan Eovaldi was scratched from his last start Sunday due to a stiff back. He is scheduled to start Friday for the first time since July 13.
Braves at Rangers projected starters
LHP Joey Wentz vs. RHP Nathan Eovaldi
Wentz (2-1, 5.71 ERA) makes his second start and 28th appearance with Braves, Minnesota Twins and Pittsburgh Pirates. He has a 1.61 WHIP, 4.8 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 through 41 innings.
Eovaldi (7-3, 1.58 ERA) makes his 17th start. He has a 0.85 WHIP, 1.4 BB/9 and 9.3 K/9 through 91 innings.

Braves at Rangers picks and predictions
Rangers 6, Braves 2
Moneyline
The RANGERS (-175) aren't priced out of line if you want to take them straight up. The price is a little high, but not over my personal limit of -180 for a standalone moneyline wager.
It's actually a bit surprising, given how poorly the Braves have played lately, that this number isn't -200 or higher. Take advantage.
Run line/Against the spread
The RANGERS -1.5 (+130) are worth a look laying the run and a half, as Eovaldi isn't likely to cough up much to the skidding Braves, while Texas should be able to get to Wentz early.
Texas is 6-1 in the past 7 games since July 13, and it has won 5 of those games by 2 or more runs. Back the Rangers on the run line, and feel confident in doing so.
Over/Under
AVOID. I expect the total (8) to come right down on the number.
The Under is 5-2 in the past 7 games for the Rangers, with the pitching staff allowing 2 or fewer runs in each of the outings. So, if there was a lean, it would be to go low.

Astros add Craig Kimbrel to address beleaguered bullpen
Craig Kimbrel has his latest MLB home, courtesy of a rough month for the Houston Astros. The Astros are signing the veteran closer straight to their big-league team, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The right-hander is reportedly on his way to Baltimore, where he'll join the team as it plays a four-game series against the Orioles this week. At 37 years old, Kimbrel is far removed from his days as one of the most dominant relievers in baseball. He remains fifth on the MLB all-time saves list, but only holds a 4.00 ERA over the past four seasons, a span of time in which his laborious and inconsistent performances have soured multiple fanbases on him. After particularly bad season with the Orioles last year, Kimbrel only managed to land a minor-league deal in a reunion with the Atlanta Braves for 2025. He failed to make the MLB team out of spring training, didn't get called up until the start of June and was designated for assignment after a single scoreless appearance. He later landed with the Texas Rangers, but was released Thursday after 24 appearances with their Triple-A Round Rock team. He posted a 3.86 ERA while in the Rangers organization. He could still be an upgrade for the Astros given how they've performed lately. The team ranks 27th in bullpen ERA over the past 30 days and will be without closer Josh Hader until around the end of the regular season. After leading the AL West by as many as seven games, Houston were 14-23 since July 7 entering Thursday and is currently attempting to keep the Seattle Mariners at bay.

Six-run inning propels Padres to series win
The San Diego Padres benefitted from two errors on one play in the bottom of the fifth inning. The play resulted in two runners crossing the plate to give the Padres a 4-2 lead over the San Fransisco Giants. By the end of the fifth, San Diego had scored six runs and enjoyed an 8-2 lead, which allowed the Padres to earn an 8-4 win at Petco Park, Thursday. San Diego opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and a walk by Ramon Laureano and Jake Cronenworth. Freddy Fermin bunted toward third base and San Francisco third baseman Casey Schmitt fielded the ball and threw wide of first base. The ball went up the right field line and right fielder Luis Matos could not field the ball cleanly. Laureano and Cronenworth scored to put the Padres ahead, 4-2. Fernando Tatis Jr. dropped down a bunt of his own and reached first, pushing Fermin to second base. Luis Arraez recorded the third consecutive bunt and was thrown out, but pushed Fermin to third and Tatis Jr. to second. With two runners in scoring position, Manny Machado hit a one-out double to left-center field that scored Fermin and Tatis Jr. to make the score, 6-2. Giants starting pitcher Justin Verlander was removed from the game and was replaced by Matt Gage. Ryan O'Hearn was the first batter to face Gage and was hit on the hand by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Machado stole third and scored when Xander Bogaerts hit an RBI-single to left to put the Padres ahead, 7-2. O'Hearn was able to advance to third on the play. San Diego added the final run of the inning when Laureano, hitting for the second time in the frame, recorded a two-out RBI-single through the right side of the infield to put the Padres on top, 8-2. Dylan Cease started the game for San Diego and suffered from defensive miscues in the top of the third inning that saw San Francisco jump out to a 2-0 lead. Cease looked to work deeper into the game after the Padres went up 8-2 in the fifth, but he allowed back-to-back home runs to Rafael Devers and Willy Adames to start the top of the sixth. The rough start to the sixth knocked him out of the game. Cease finished five-plus innings and allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. The San Diego bullpen worked the remaining innings of the game without allowing a run and helped the Padres get a 3-1 series win. San Diego hosts the Los Angeles Dodgers, Friday at 6:40 p.m. The Padres enter the weekend series one game back of the NL West Division lead.

Nationals beat banged-up Mets 9-3 to win series
James Wood broke out of a slump with a three-run homer, Riley Adams hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth inning, and the last-place Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 9-3 on Thursday to take two of three from their banged-up NL East rivals. Wood's opposite-field shot to left in the ninth was his 26th homer of the season but just his second since the second-year slugger played in his first All-Star Game. Rookie Brady House had three hits and an RBI for the Nationals, who got another strong performance from their inexperienced bullpen after All-Star MacKenzie Gore couldn't get through the fifth. Jackson Rutledge (2-2), Clayton Beeter, PJ Poulin, Cole Henry and Jose A. Ferrer combined to allow one hit in 4 2/3 innings, with Ferrer getting the last four outs for his fourth save. Francisco Lindor broke the Mets' franchise record for leadoff homers in a season with his eighth. It was his 25th homer of the season and 28th career leadoff shot. Starling Marte also homered for the Mets, who didn't have regulars Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil in the lineup due to nagging injuries. McNeil struck out looking as a pinch-hitter in the eighth. New York has lost 16 of 21 and fell seven games behind first-place Philadelphia in the division. House led off the fifth with a single against Sean Manaea (1-2) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul DeJong before Adams' single off reliever Tyler Rogers made it 4-3. Mets slugger Juan Soto went 1 for 12 with six strikeouts in the series against the club that signed him as a 16-year-old in 2015. The Mets begin a series at Atlanta on Friday, with rookie Nolan McLean (1-0, 0.00 ERA) making his second career start. Joey Wentz (4-3, 4.72) pitches for the Braves. Cade Cavalli (1-0, 2.20) starts Washington's series opener Friday at Philadelphia, which counters with Taijuan Walker (4-6, 3.34).
