Australian Fashion Week 2025: Pip Edwards leads near-nude rush with underwear as outerwear trend

News.com.au17-05-2025

Pip Edwards has led the charge at Australian Fashion Week where, in an ironic twist, actual clothing was out of style.
'Inside out, outside in … no rules,' the designer said while posing for photos and flaunting the season's must-have item: underwear.
The tracksuit mogul was finally free from the restraints of the Sporty Spice athleisure that had covered her body for so long. Strutting into the runway show for Australian suiting brand Farage, the 45-year-old — who last year stepped down from her namesake sportswear brand P.E. Nation — shrugged off the thick nylon fabrics of yore to reveal … not much.
At Fashion Week this year, less is more. What you see is what you get – whether you want to, or not. Exposed underwear – visible briefs, bras and G-bangers under sheer dresses – had slipped off the runways and onto the streets.
The emperor has no clothes, and neither do the influencers.
While the trend had started to creep in at last year's Fashion Week in Sydney, it seemed even more people were now comfortable with the idea of flashing their jocks.
Celebrity stylist Elliot Garnaut said the fad had 'surged dramatically' — led by Miu Miu and followed by Aussie designers like Beare Park and Mariam Seddiq, who incorporated sheer fabrics and lingerie-inspired elements into their collections shown this week.
' … The trend took a bolder turn (this year),' said Garnaut, whose A-list clients include radio host Carrie Bickmore and model Shanina Shaik.
'Think: underwear worn proudly over leggings, or no pants at all — just high-cut briefs and a whole lot of confidence. It's all about personality and styling with intent … because there's a fine line between fashion-forward and looking like you left the house before the dry cleaning was ready!'
Internet personality Sopha Dophaa, who has about 1.4 million followers on TikTok, said she was emulating the ultimate fashion icon: 'Captain Underpants.'
Her lewk? White briefs pulled over a pair of tights.
'It's weird. It's not a normal thing,' she said.
'I wouldn't do this on a normal day. (The trend) started last year but this year I'm trying to embrace it.'
Her friend had worn the exact same pair of jocks and tights earlier in the day. Then Sopha Dophaa (real name Sophia Begg) decided to yank them on.
A communal pair of jocks? Don't judge. It's called far-shun.
And Sopha Dophaa's not the only person rocking second-hand underwear.
'This bra isn't even mine, it's my daughter's,' image consultant Jenny Austin, 51, said about the exposed $30 Bonds underwear she nicked from her child's bedroom that morning.
Content creator Jazzlin Jarrett, 21, said she paid $2000 on fashion resale marketplace Depop for a used briefs-and-bralette combo from luxury designer Miu Miu.
'I think it's pretty affordable compared to brand new,' she said, before admitting she was 'nervous' to leave the house with the lingerie on-show.
For content creator Rachel Johnston, 24, wearing her underwear for all to see was about 'breaking down the boundaries and pushing the limits'.
She said she regularly wears the look 'pretty much anywhere'.
'I get positive reactions from girls … but it's a different reaction from the guys,' she said. 'It's a little more sexual … But I do it for the girls.'
Celebrity stylist Elliot Garnaut, said it's 'crucial to consider your setting' and issued a warning to perhaps avoid experimenting with the style at more demure affairs, like black tie weddings.
Cristal Dale, 22, decided underwear simply wasn't revealing enough. She ditched her bra completely and instead decided to wear a belt as a top.
'I just came up with it,' she said. 'I grabbed the belt off the jacket and off I went.'
At Carriageworks, the industrial venue where Fashion week is staged, a young man crashed the festival and seemingly mocked proceedings by strutting around in a pair of Budgy Smugglers.
One young woman, wearing a lace corset as a top, was not impressed.
'Attention seeker,' she muttered.

TRUMP AND ELON DRAMA Elon Musk and Donald Trump have exploded back into headlines today. That's right, the political bromance of tech billionaire Elon Musk, and US President Donald Trump is over. But what on earth happened? Well, from Mr Trump's first day in office, Elon Musk had been a major player. But recently, the pair started butting heads over some policies, particularly this spending bill called the One Big Beautiful Act, and last week, Musk left his role at the White House. But things really escalated overnight after the President said this. Mr Musk started firing back on his social media platform, X. And then the President hopped on his social media platform and well, the fight of the century began. It's been a war of words that honestly you'd expect from more of a roast battle. And while plenty of people have the popcorn out, lots are also worried about what it'll mean for American politics, if this feud continues to escalate. SOCCEROOS The Socceroos are on the brink of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a nail biting one-nil win last night. Japan dominated play for most of the match, until the very final minute when Aziz Behich scored this winning goal. It was his first Socceroos goal in 13 years and Australia's first win over Japan in 16 years. And as long as they avoid a heavy defeat in next week's game against Saudi Arabia, they're all but certain to qualify. PARA SPORT Now over to Darwin, where students living with disabilities are taking part in a program that's all about trying new sports and getting active. From golf, to wheelchair rugby, these kids in Darwin are discovering their new favourite sports. It's all part of a national program designed to encourage people living with disabilities to explore different sports, and this year more than 250 students took part. And Sam says events like this aren't just about getting active, they're about giving it a go, making friends and having a lot of fun at the same time. ROBOTS MOVING HOUSES First up, to a block of buildings on the move in China! 400 robotic feet lifted and moved them in sync. They're actually being moved back to their original location after making way for underground construction works. The robots moved the buildings, weighing 7-and-a-half thousand tonnes, at a rate of about 10 meters per day. SWITCH STAPLES Now to people around the world who have lined up for hours just to buy the new Nintendo Switch 2. But for some customers in the US, excitement quickly turned to disappointment, as reports of punctured screens appeared on social media. Turns out, because Nintendo packaged the Switch with its screen facing outwards, when game shop employees used staplers to staple receipts to the front of boxes. A whole bunch of console screens were left damaged. One shop has already offered to replace them, adding staplers have been confiscated. STANLEY PUP And finally, if you've ever wanted to watch dogs play hockey, this is the closest you're gonna get. The world's first Stanley Pup, a play off the famous Stanley Cup hockey championship, features rescue dogs who are all up for adoption. It's a collaboration between America's national hockey league and an animal welfare charity.

‘Accidents happen': Fans in hysterics over Cotton On jeans

A pair of jeans from Cotton On are going viral because of a questionable design detail that's been described as 'fart fashion' and compared to a bathroom mishap. It all began after TikTok user Adele shared a now-viral video, which has amassed 1.6 million views, showing herself browsing the denim section at a Cotton On store. The clip zooms in on a pair of blue jeans featuring brown stains across the front and back. Adele wrote over the clip, 'What was Cotton On thinking?' Her caption said, 'Someone had an accident', which quickly set the tone for thousands of comments. Jeans become butt of the joke One user joked that Cotton On was now selling pants that have been 'pre-sh*t' in, so you 'no longer need to sh*t them yourself'. Another person said they looked like 'quite the mess', one thought they were 'ew', and someone else declared 'they're so ugly'. Even Cotton On staff weighed in, with one admitting, 'as an employee … we also hate these jeans'. 'So you're telling me I could have accidentally slipped in mud, put my jeans on that pile, and get money for it?' another user asked, as a different person replied: 'Yes, because we absolutely want to look like we just had explosive diarrhoea in our jeans'. 'Run, don't walk … to the toilet,' another quipped. High fashion as inspo Crudeness aside, the jeans appear to be a budget-friendly 'dupe' of a high-end pair from cult label Acne Studios. The original, the Distressed Organic Mid-Rise Wide-Leg Jeans, retail for a staggering $1470 and is described by luxury retailer Net-a-Porter as 'intentional distressing … creating jeans that look as though they've been worn and loved for years'. Meanwhile, Cotton On's version, the Low Rise Straight Jean, is priced at $69.99, which is a fraction of the designer price tag. Fashion expert weighs in Fashion stylist Donny Galella told that it's not unusual for brands like Cotton On to offer affordable versions of premium designs. 'We are living in dupe culture world,' he said. 'Acne is definitely one of the world's hottest brands but given the cost of living crisis, many people don't have a spare $1400 laying around for a dirty looking pair of jeans. Especially for a 'trend' style pair of jeans that will have a short shelf life'. Mr Galella's advice is to 'invest that money into a more classic style pair of jeans that will be much more versatile and have a much longer shelf life'.
