No more free remittances for NBD customers starting September: What expats need to know
Emirates NBD's DirectRemit service allows customers to send quick, digital international money transfers to supported countries, previously free of charge but now subject to a fixed Dh26.25 fee/ Image:X
Emirates NBD, one of the largest banking groups in the UAE, has officially announced that it will begin charging customers a fixed fee of Dh26.25 (₹598.50) ($7.15) (inclusive of VAT) for international money transfers made through its DirectRemit service.
This change will take effect from Monday, September 1, 2025, and marks a significant shift in the bank's longstanding policy of offering free remittances to selected countries.
The update was shared in an email sent to customers, in which the bank stated:
'Effective Monday, September 1, 2025, charge of Dh26.25 will be applicable for International Transfers (Including DirectRemit) remittance service initiated from ENBD X or Online Banking.
The fee is inclusive of VAT.'
What's Changing?
Previously, Emirates NBD customers enjoyed instant and fee-free money transfers to banks in countries considered part of the bank's "popular remittance corridor." These included India, the Philippines, Egypt, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom, with a minimum transfer amount of Dh100.
Starting in September, the Dh26.25 charge will apply uniformly across all international transfers initiated via:
The ENBD X mobile app
The bank's online banking platform
This effectively ends the free transfer benefit previously associated with DirectRemit, the bank's digital remittance tool that allowed cross-border transactions to be completed in less than 60 seconds.
Additionally, the bank has introduced a cancellation fee of up to Dh26.25 for recall or cancellation of any local or international transfers, bringing another layer of change to its remittance services. This applies whether the transaction is completed or pending.
How Does It Compare to Other UAE Banks?
International wire transfer fees across UAE banks generally range from Dh20 to Dh60, depending on the channel and destination. With this fee update, Emirates NBD is aligning DirectRemit with the industry standard applied to most other international transfers offered by UAE-based banks.
No other changes have been announced to the exchange rate margins or processing times associated with DirectRemit. The core functionality of the service, quick, digital cross-border money transfers—remains unchanged aside from the new fee.
Advice to Customers
Customers are encouraged to:
Review their recent transfer history to assess how the new fee structure will impact their remittance habits
Compare rates and fees with other available remittance services in the market
Stay informed through official bank channels for any future changes or updates
This adjustment signals Emirates NBD's broader move to standardize its digital banking offerings, bringing them in line with conventional cross-border transfer practices within the UAE banking sector.

Govt, industry, academia join hands to tackle rare earth magnet challenge
Government, industry and academia are working to resolve the issues concerning rare earth magnets , which are used in the automobile sector and other devices, a senior Meity official said on Friday. The technology exists to make rare earth magnets but to produce them at a commercially competitive rate is a challenge, ministry of electronics and IT, additional secretary, Amitesh Sinha said. Speaking on the sidelines of Tec-Verse event showcasing PSU technology research, Sinha said that to solve the issues concerning rare earth, all three partners - govt, industry and academia - are doing their work. "Technology is there, but we have to see how commercially we can do it at a competitive price. So that is the main challenge. Govt will surely work because these things are now becoming strategic and important," Sinha said. The Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology ( C-MET ), a research unit under Meity, at the event signed a transfer of technology agreement with Ahmedabad-based firm Somal Magnets for the production of rare earth magnets. Sinha said the work on the technology development has been going on for some years as the govt realises the importance of material technologies. "It is an effort of the last few years. So they (C-MET) have already been working on it, but suddenly the focus has come on this rare earth material. For such things, first we will have to develop a capability which, at the time of crisis, can be easily scaled. So that kind of infrastructure or capability we are aiming for now," Sinha said. He, however, said Meity is not directly engaged in the production of rare earth magnets but only in some technologies that are important for their production. In April 2024, China implemented strict export licensing on rare earth elements like terbium and dysprosium - key inputs for high-level performance NdFeB (Neodymium-Iron-Boron) magnets used in consumer electronics. The country's oldest electronics industry body, Elcina, said that the move has disrupted global supply chains, hitting India's fast-growing hearables and wearables sector hard, and the device makers are switching to import fully assembled speaker modules from China.

MNRE updates biomass and waste-to-energy guidelines, links subsidies to plant performance
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has revised guidelines for the Biomass and Waste-to-Energy (WtE) programmes under Phase-I of the National Bioenergy Programme. The updates simplify compliance and tie financial support to actual plant performance. Biomass programme: Eased requirements, performance-based subsidy Effective for FY 2021–22 to 2025–26, the new Biomass Programme norms reduce documentation and relax approval procedures. Developers of briquette and pellet plants are no longer required to submit multiple clearances or long-term sale contracts; a general sale agreement now suffices. SCADA systems are no longer mandatory for monitoring. Developers may opt for IoT-based solutions or submit quarterly performance data. Central Financial Assistance (CFA) will be disbursed based on operational efficiency. Plants running above 80 per cent efficiency will receive full assistance; others will be supported on a pro-rata basis. The inspection window is now 18 months from commissioning or in-principle approval, whichever is later, with provisions for extension. The operational benchmark has been lowered—from three days at 80 per cent capacity for 16 hours a day to a continuous 10-hour run—to validate plant capacity. Biomass pellet producers in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and NCR districts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh can choose between MNRE or CPCB support. Waste-to-Energy programme: Staggered CFA, simplified inspections Under the revised WtE guidelines, 50 per cent of the CFA will be released upon securing Consent to Operate from the State Pollution Control Board, against a bank guarantee. The remainder will follow after the project reaches 80 per cent of its rated or CFA-eligible capacity. If this is not achieved, support will be offered on a pro-rata basis; projects operating below a 50 per cent plant load factor will receive no subsidy. Joint inspections will now be led by the National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE), along with SNAs, Biogas Technology Development Centres, or empanelled bodies. Only one inspection will be required for those not availing advance CFA. Developers have 18 months from commissioning or in-principle approval to claim the subsidy. According to the Ministry, these changes are aimed at improving bioenergy adoption , agricultural residue management, and renewable energy deployment .
