"That was one of the most embarrassing things to ever happen. I can't believe that just happened."
Srixon's updated Soft Feel golf ball offers a softer feel and straighter flight at an affordable price point.
The ball features a new core design that increases ball speed while maintaining a low compression for a softer feel at impact.
Available in various colors, including matte options, the Soft Feel caters to golfers seeking both performance and visual preference.
Gear: Srixon Soft Feel golf balls (2025)
Price: $24.99 per dozen
Specs: Two-piece, Surlyn-covered balls in white, yellow, pink, matte orange, matte green and matte red
Who it's for: Golfers who want a soft feel and the moment of impact, reduced spin and a mid- to high-flight.
What you should know: Srixon modified the core of Soft Feel for 2025 to give this two-piece ball more speed while retaining its low compression and feel.
The deep dive: While elite golfers like Hideki Matsuyama, Shane Lowry, Brooks Koepka and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley opt for Srixon's premium Z-Star, Z-Star Diamond and Z-Star XV balls, with a $49.99 price tag per dozen, those balls are simply out of reach for many players. Plus, they all have high compression and can feel overly hard to moderate and slower-swinging players.
Srixon's Soft Feel balls, however, have always been made for budget-conscious players who want a ball that feels soft at impact and that flies straight, and with the updated version for 2025, the Japanese brand has tried to deliver more of that.
At the heart of the Soft Feel balls is an updated, gradational FastLayer core. It is softer in the center and gradually gets firmer toward the edges, so while it is one piece of rubber, it behaves like a core that has lots of layers. That means it can be compressed more easily and give more ball speed to a wide range of players. At the same time, the overall compression, 58, is significantly lower than Srixon's tour balls, so it will feel and sound softer when golfers hit it.
The 338-dimple cover pattern is designed to reduce drag, and the ball's soft core reduces overall spin, so Soft Feel should create less side spin and decrease the severity of hooks and slices, so golfers should hit straighter shots off the tee.
Soft Feel has been designed with a thin Surlyn cover, so it will not provide the level of greenside spin golfers can achieve with the urethane-covered Z-Star balls, but the material is durable and should hold up well throughout your round.
In addition to being available in white and yellow, Soft Feel will be available in matte orange, green and red for players who like a high-visibility option. A Soft Feel Lady version, with a 56 compression and even higher launch, is also available in white and pink.

Resurgent Padres atop NL West ahead of 3-game series at rival Dodgers beginning Friday night

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — At the outset of play on July 4, the San Diego Padres were coming off a 2-4 trip through Cincinnati and Philadelphia and trailed the Los Angeles Dodgers by nine games in the National League West. On Friday night, the Padres and Dodgers open a three-game series at Los Angeles with San Diego atop the division. The Padres completed a three-game sweep of the host San Francisco Giants on Wednesday with an 11-1 romp that extended San Diego's winning streak to five games. The Padres also have won five straight series and are 23-12 since Independence Day. 'We've played a lot of really good baseball,' manager Mike Shildt said. 'Pitching's been good, defense, baserunning. I've been really pleased the last week or so about the offense dictating the game.' San Diego took control Wednesday with a seven-run second inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. contributed a two-run single. 'We're going out there confident every single day, playing good baseball, clean baseball — and that's what we're capable of doing,' said Tatis, who had two hits, two walks and drove in three runs. The Padres and Dodgers have met in the NL Division Series three times in the past five seasons, with LA winning in 2020 and '24 and San Diego prevailing in '22. Considering that history, Tatis said it's hard to overstate the importance of this weekend's series, even if it is only mid-August. 'It's huge. That's what we're playing for,' Tatis said. 'It's in our hands, how much we want it.' Barely more than a month ago, the Padres weren't particularly concerned with the division race. 'We played some bad baseball around that time, so we weren't really looking up at that point,' third baseman Manny Machado said. 'We were just trying to get back in the win column.' The Padres revamped their roster at the trade deadline, adding — most notably — outfielder Ramón Laureano and All-Star designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn from the Orioles, catcher Freddy Fermin from the Royals, left-hander Nestor Cortes from the Brewers and reliever Mason Miller from the Athletics. 'Every player that has come in has contributed in a really big (way). They're a really big part of this team,' Tatis said. Laureano went 3 for 4 with a two-run homer Wednesday. He has gone 15 for 45 (.333) with San Diego. Fermin is 11 for 31 (.355) with the Padres. 'Clearly, it's a series people are going to be paying attention to,' Shildt said, 'and we're just going to play good, clean, fundamental Padre baseball.'

Twins owners halt sale of team in shocking move to keep club in the family

The Minnesota Twins are no longer for sale, executive chair Joe Pohlad announced Wednesday on behalf of his family. After exploring a variety of options since publicizing the sale 10 months ago, the Pohlad family will remain the principal owner of the club and add new investors instead. Carl Pohlad, a banking magnate and the late grandfather of Joe Pohlad, bought the Twins in 1984 for $44 million. Advertisement 3 Minnesota Twins executive vice president Joe Pohlad announced the franchise are no longer so sale. AP 'For more than four decades, our family has had the privilege of owning the Minnesota Twins. This franchise has become part of our family story, as it has for our employees, our players, this community, and Twins fans everywhere,' Joe Pohlad said in his announcement. 'Over the past several months, we explored a wide range of potential investment and ownership opportunities. Our focus throughout has been on what's best for the long-term future of the Twins. We have been fully open to all possibilities.' Pohlad said the family was in the process of adding two 'significant' limited partnership groups to bring in fresh ideas, bolster critical partnerships and shape the long-term vision of the franchise that relocated to Minnesota in 1961 after originating as the Washington Senators. Advertisement Details about the new investors were being kept private until Major League Baseball approves the transactions, Pohlad said. Financial analysis earlier this year by Forbes valued the franchise at $1.5 billion, ranked 23rd in MLB. Sportico ($1.7 billion) and CNBC ($1.65 billion) pegged the Twins higher. The Pohlads hired Allen & Company, a New York-based investment bank, to direct the sale and keep inquiries confidential. Advertisement Multiple published reports identified Justin Ishbia, a part owner of the NBA's Phoenix Suns, as the front-runner. 3 This decision follows a near 10 month search for a potential buyer. AP But the Chicago White Sox announced last month that Ishbia was becoming a limited partner in a deal that provides a runway for him to become controlling owner. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred acknowledged during the All-Star break, without naming him directly, that Ishbia's decision sidetracked the process. Advertisement 'There will be a transaction,' Manfred said. 'You just need to be patient while they rework.' The Twins are on track for their lowest attendance total in 16 seasons at Target Field, and an ownership-mandated payroll reduction last year in light of decreased regional television revenue, among other factors, has contributed to a dissatisfied customer base. The Twins traded 10 players off their roster leading up to the July 31 deadline, furthering the frustration. Word that the Pohlads are staying put certainly won't help the morale of Minnesota baseball fans, who've been waiting for another World Series title since 1991 and saw the investment in the roster plunge right after an American League Central title in 2023. The Twins won a playoff series then, too, their first in 21 years. 3 The organization will now remain within possession of the Pohlad family, even after trading away 10 players prior to this past trade deadline. 'We see and hear the passion from our partners, the community, and Twins fans. That passion inspires us,' Pohlad said. 'This ownership group is committed to building a winning team and culture for this region, one that Twins fans are proud to cheer for.' Speaking before Minnesota's game at the New York Yankees, manager Rocco Baldelli said he was happy to hear the Pohlad family would be staying involved. Advertisement 'One of the main reasons why I came to this organization in the first place was because of the Pohlads and the types of owners they are and how they treat people, so just start there,' Baldelli said. 'They've been a big part of my stay here and lot of the successes that we've had here as well.' The Twins began the season ranked 17th in player payroll at a little more than $142.8 million, but their trading spree last month lopped about $26 million from that figure. Shortstop Carlos Correa was sent to the Houston Astros in a pure salary dump that reunited the three-time All-Star with his original team, which inherited $70 million of the more than $103 million that remained on his contract. Advertisement Pohlad, in an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune published immediately after the announcement, said he understands the bad feelings from the fans and looks forward to helping rebuild the brand and the roster. He said one of the investment groups is made up of Minnesotans and the other is a family based on the East Coast. Pohlad also said the teardown of the roster was not driven by a request from ownership to further cut costs. 'It certainly set us up for more flexibility, but they were primarily baseball decisions,' Pohlad told the Star Tribune.

Brewers win 12th straight, clinch free burgers. Where does their streak stack up?

The Milwaukee Brewers can't stop winning at the moment, and the hottest team in Major League Baseball is on the cusp of setting a team record. The Brewers brushed the Pittsburgh Pirates aside on Wednesday, Aug. 13, claiming their 12th consecutive win with a 12-5 victory at American Family Field. The streak began back on Aug. 1 with a 16-9 win over the Washington Nationals, and since then the Brewers have claimed four straight series sweeps to get within touching distance of a team record. This streak is Milwaukee's second such run to extend into double digits this season, something the Brewers had only previously done eight times in their existence. Last month, Milwaukee won 11 straight, a run spanning either side of the All-Star break. For the right kind of fan, getting to 12 straight didn't just improve what was already the best record in baseball. Wisconsin-based restaurant chain George Webb is offering free burgers to celebrate the fact that Milwaukee has won a dozen games without slipping up. The restaurant confirmed as much on social media following Wednesday's win, adding that the free burgers will be available on a yet-to-be-announced date: 🎉 THEY DID IT!!! 🎉 You know what that means? FREE GEORGE WEBB BURGERS are coming! We're buzzing with excitement and working hard to prepare. Please note: Burgers will NOT be ready right away. A special giveaway date will be announced tomorrow with all the details! Stay tuned!
