Payouts revealed as Dundee United, Dundee, St Johnstone and Dunfermline Athletic land Uefa cash boost

The Courier22-04-2025

Dundee United, Dundee, St Johnstone and Dunfermline Athletic will all benefit as part of a mammoth payout from the European Club Association (ECA).
The Club Benefits Programme – part of an agreement between the ECA and Uefa – has seen a record-breaking sum of £191 million paid out to sides across the continent.
Teams are compensated for the release of players in the last four-year cycle (2020 to 2024) for competitions including, but not limited to, the 2020/21 and 2022/23 UEFA Nations League, European qualifiers and Euro 2024.
It is substantial increase from the previous cycle, from 2016 to 2020, which stood at £172 million.
Just shy of £2.4 million was earmarked for clubs in Scotland.
A sum of £75,303 went to United, while St Johnstone banked £37,650 and Dundee earned £12,550.
Dunfermline Athletic – who, along with Livingston, were one of only two sides outside the top-flight to benefit – added £6,275 to their coffers.
Celtic were the biggest beneficiaries, earning £1.1 million.

100 million transfer claim triggers a festering Celtic acrimony as Hotline seizes on Lennon Miller shout

Celtic and Rangers spend fortunes on folk who scour the globe looking for players. But they could save themselves a few quid by just taking the advice of the Hotline when it comes to new arrivals. Hoops fans are debating top targets such as Lennon Miller and Evan Ferguson, while Gers punts have strong views on the likes of Kwame Poku. Never mind recruitment gurus or sporting directors, Scott McAdam, Glasgow, said: ' Celtic should forget about Lennon Miller as £10m for an 18-year-old who's had one season in the top team at Motherwell is too much. 'They must be delusional if they think anyone in Scotland will pay that kind of money for him.' Paul Price, Glasgow, said: 'Wise up Celtic. Lennon Miller is an outstanding talent with so much potential. 'Celtic should have had him in a pre- contract when last season finished.' James McCaw emailed: 'How good of Chris Sutton saying Celtic should spend £5m or £6m to sign Lennon when there's reportedly been offers in the £8 million bracket and now a reported 10 million offer coming from Sunderland. 'Lennon will only get to be an even better player than he already is by playing regularly, not sitting on the bench waiting for a chance to break into the team.' Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: 'I hope rumours that Celtic are supposedly interested in Evan Ferguson are just that. 'He reminds me of Olivier Burke who came with a big reputation but turned out about as good as Oliver Hardy. 'I still think there's a player in Adam Idah, despite his critics, and I'd persevere with him at the start of the season.' Peter Cooperwhite emailed: 'So Shay Given reckons Celtic should go for Evan Ferguson with record reads 33 games without a goal. 'Idah can't do much better and Celtic fans laugh at the Rangers recruitment policy. 'Really this boy was once worth a staggering £100m is that crypto currency jargon or am I in another world.' John Stewart, Newton Mearns, said: 'I've heard it all now, Ferguson £100 million rated Celtic target? 'He's flopped everywhere he's been. Harry Kane was £80 million.' Peterborough legend Barry Fry wants top dosh for Poku but Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, said: 'Fry's been around the block knows how to create a good story, but Peterborough finished 18th in League One, so Poku didn't set the world on fire. 'Rangers would be better spending money bringing back Vaclav Cerny. 'Silky skills with the ball, scores goals and has European experience.' Rangers have new owners with deep pockets but Gordon Ashley, Ayr, said: 'Due to new FSR rules the only way that Rangers can catch Celtic financially is by qualifying for the Champions League a couple of times while Celtic don't or by taking over our player trading model, but looking at the bargains Celtic are close to signing from Denmark and England they are miles behind us on that front.' Euan Robertson emailed: 'Rangers fans are thinking they will reach the levels of Celtic from one year of the 49ers' money. Think again. It will take years for the Gers to overtake the pride of Glasgow.'

Ferdinand says Man Utd and Arsenal target should be 'causing nightmare' for move

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand says Viktor Gyokeres should be 'causing a nightmare' at Sporting if he wishes to secure a move to the Premier League this summer. Gyokeres, 27, has established himself as one of the most sought-after attacking players in European football on the back of two outstanding seasons with Sporting, in which he scored 97 goals in 102 appearances. The Portuguese champions have grown increasingly resigned to losing their prized possession amid strong interest from the Premier League, with Arsenal currently leading Manchester United in the race for the prolific forward. However, Gyokeres' path to English football is currently being blocked by Sporting president Frederico Varandas, who is disputing claims made by the Swede's camp. A 'furious' Gyokeres had been under the impression he could leave for a fee of £59million, but Varandas is denying the existence of a supposed gentleman's agreement with the striker. 'I'll tell you one thing, I would be in his [Varandas'] office and he wouldn't be able to leave me,' ex-United and England defender Ferdinand told talkSPORT when asked about the latest rumours. 'I'd be in his bed, I'd be in his front room, his kitchen, he wouldn't be able to get me out of his sight. 'I'd be causing him a nightmare to get out if we'd had an agreement. 'I did that when I was at Leeds. I heard that Manchester United were interested in me and I knew had to let me go. 'I went to Peter Ridsdale and said, 'Listen, I know you need to sell me, let's not haggle over a couple of million here and there and let's get a deal done', and I was there for hours waiting and ended up getting it done.' While Ferdinand has been impressed by Gyokeres' extraordinary numbers in Portuguese football, he believes the jury is still out on the Sweden international being able to mix it with the best. According to Ferdinand, United ideally should be scouring the market for a proven No.9 with 'experience'. 'Is he the right guy? Listen, he has some really good attributes. I've not seen enough of him to be totally convinced,' the six-time Premier League winner added. 'The games I have seen him in, in the Champions League against players that match him up physically, I'd love to see a bit more. 'But there's no denying that he knows where the goal is. He's playing in Portugal where he's been banging in and setting up goals left, right and centre the last couple of years. 'I just think for Manchester United, at this moment in time, I would go for experience more than anything.' Gyokeres reassured fans he would 'speak when the time is right' as he took to Instagram amid incessant speculation over his future on Friday. 'There's a lot of talk at the moment, most of it false,' Gyokeres wrote. 'I will speak when the time is right.' Gyokeres' current contract in Lisbon runs through to June 2028. 'He is very happy here,' Sporting manager Rui Borges said when asked for an update on Gyokeres' future after the club successfully defended their Primeira Liga title. 'He is very connected to the game, he wants to score and he is obsessed with it. 'He is the best striker in Europe, as the numbers show. 'He will be attractive, but I believe that if he doesn't leave Sporting, he will remain very committed to the club. He feels very happy here.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. However, Bajrami is determined to hit the ground running under new boss Russell Martin. The 26-year-old was honoured with a mural in his family's home town of Tetevo depicting his goal for Albania after 26 seconds at Euro 2024 - the fastest-ever goal at the European Championships. And he was quizzed about his future. Bajrami said: "In football, you never say never. "But I am currently focused only on Rangers. "It is a special emotion to be back in my home town. "My advice to everyone is to never stop believing in yourself." Bajrami made 44 appearances for Rangers last season in all competitions and scored five goals for the club, including the opening goal in the League Cup Final against Celtic in December, which they eventually lost on penalties. Meanwhile, Rangers cult hero Gennaro Gattuso has bagged the biggest job of his managerial career. £6m Rangers star Danilo spotted doing gruelling sessions on beach in Brazil as he gears up for make or break pre-season The 47-year-old is taking over from Luciano Spalletti as boss of Italy. He signed for Rangers as a teenager back in 1997, before having a highly successful career, winning the World Cup with his country in 2006 and earning a total of 73 caps.
