Illinois State Police trooper injured in 4th Scott's Law crash in 2025
ITASCA, Ill. (WMBD) — The Illinois State Police are reporting the fourth Scott's Law-related crash of the year on Thursday.
The crash occurred when a state trooper was handling a crash on Interstate 290 westbound ramp to Illinois 390 in Itasca at approximately 8:18 a.m., an ISP news release stated.
The trooper was on the left shoulder of the road, seated in a squad car which had activated emergency lights, when the vehicle was struck by Saturn Vue that failed to move into another lane as required by law.
UPDATED: Driver charged with Scott's Law violation in connection with trooper's death
Both the trooper and the driver of the vehicle, 44-year-old Teresa Muro, were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Muro was cited for operating an uninsured vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident as well as a Scott's Law violation.
The Move Over Law, also known as Scott's Law in Illinois, requires all drivers to move over when approaching an emergency vehicle or any vehicle with its emergency or hazard lights activated.
In 2024, there were 27 Move Over Law-related crashes, which resulted in 12 troopers injured and one death, the news release stated.

Peoria man gets 7-year sentence for June 2024 shooting
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A Peoria man was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in prison for a June 2024 incident where two cars were struck by gunfire. Christopher Polnitz Cleary, 20, was sentenced in Peoria County Circuit Court by Chief Judge Katherine Gorman. The sentence was in near the lower end of the four-to-15-year year prison term. Polnitz-Clary was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with the June 7, 2024, incident that occurred near the intersection of East Frye and North Indiana avenues. More than 60 shell casings were found on the scene, according to Peoria police. Two days later, officers were sent to the intersection of Hanssler Place and Broadway Street for another report of shots fired. When they arrived, a home and a car were struck by gunfire. During an investigation of the second shooting, detectives found that a blue Dodge Caliber was the vehicle used in the shootings. Two Peoria men indicted for June shooting leaving more than 60 shell casings behind In April, Cleary pleaded guilty and under state law, he must serve at least 85% of his sentence. During the sentencing hearing Wednesday, Assistant State's Attorney Brian FitzSimons told Gorman that the shooting happened in the middle of the day and while people were around. It's sheer luck, he said, that no one was hurt. Gorman noted that while Polnitz-Clary had taken steps to improve himself while in custody, his actions could not be overlooked. QC residents hold multiple anti-ICE protests
Quad Cities residents made their voices heard about the ongoing ICE raids in Los Angeles. Three different ICE-related protests were held throughout Davenport Tuesday at the corner of Brady and Locust, outside of the U.S. District Courthouse, and at Bechtel Park. A variety of the signs and chants called the recent ICE raids an example of totalitarianism. A couple of people told Our Quad Cities News that they were shocked to see military personnel being deployed against protesters. 'It makes it extremely more personal to me seeing familiar faces, familiar people, people who speak like me, look like me, being taken by ICE, ripped away from their kids and families, and everything they call home,' said Alex Friend, a protester. 'You can't have justice without compassion and mercy. Otherwise, you are just a brutal dictator, and that is what Trump is showing himself to be,' said Rich Hendricks, a protester. More than 20 people participated in each of the different protests. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
