Death of teen: Cop not handcuffed leaving court as he had posted bail
GURUN: Images of a police corporal leaving court not handcuffed after being charged with causing the death of a teenager by dangerous driving have gone viral, sparking public outrage over perceived preferential treatment. However, according to court records, 52-year-old Azhar Mat Sani had already posted bail of RM6,000 when he left the magistrate's court here today and entered a police vehicle. He had been seen entering the vehicle without restraints, despite facing a charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years. Under standard procedure, once bail is posted, an accused is not required to be restrained. It is understood that he had arrived at the court complex earlier in the morning in his own vehicle, before any members of the media were present. He was later seen leaving in a police vehicle. Azhar had pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving causing the death of 16-year-old motorcyclist Muhammad Nor Iman Danial Mohd Roshidi. The case has been fixed for mention on Sept 29.
