JDT trounce Selangor 3-0, to lift Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup for the 10th time

Malay Mail3 days ago
ISKANDAR PUTERI, Aug 9 — Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) continue to excel in a class of their own after defending the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup champion title for the eighth consecutive time by defeating Selangor FC 3-0 in the Charity Shield match here, last night.
The victory in the opening match of the Malaysia League (M-League) at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Iskandar Puteri also gave JDT three points, thus enabling the Southern Tigers to get the perfect start in their mission to win the Super League for the 12th time in a row.
In JDT's first competitive match under their new Spanish coach, Xisco Munoz last night, new striker Jairo Da Silva from Brazil, defender Eddy Israfilov and agile winger Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi each made their name as scorers in each half.
Da Silva, a former striker for Cyprus club Pafos FC, punished the negligence of Selangor's defence as early as the first minute when he quickly found space to finish off Jonathan Silva's cross from the left, putting JDT ahead 1-0.
Selangor under coach Kinoshi Katsuhito, who rarely create dangerous moves, wasted a golden opportunity to equalise in the 42nd minute when striker Chrigor Moraes failed to beat goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi Mohamed in a one on one situation.
Continuing the second half, Selangor goalkeeper Kalamullah Al Hafiz Mat Rowi performed brilliantly when denying two close-range attempts by JDT, each by Jaoa Figuiredo in the 51st minute and substitute striker Bergson Da Silva in the 62nd minute.
However, he was beaten for the second time when Israfilov jumped high to head in Arif Aiman's corner kick for JDT's second goal in the 64th minute, which delighted about 32,777 spectators in the stadium.
Arif Aiman completed JDT's stylish victory with a third goal after he, who was not well guarded, made a run into the penalty box and fired a powerful shot that Kalamullah failed to save in the 73rd minute.
The 3-0 score remained until the final whistle and was enough to allow JDT to win the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup for the 10th time since the 2015 season.
The clash between JDT and Selangor last night is also considered a 'deferred revenge' after the last edition's meeting had to be cancelled following Selangor's withdrawal at the last minute.
At that time, Selangor had to withdraw following criminal incidents that befell several of their players, including the acid attack incident on Faisal Halim on May 5 last year.
Following that, JDT was declared a 3-0 'free win' and earned three Super League points. — Bernama

Ipoh-born squash prodigy Jinoreeka Ning bags third Hong Kong Junior Open title, eyes British Junior Open next

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Ipoh-born junior squash star Jinoreeka Ning Manivannan won her third Hong Kong Junior Open title yesterday, earning herself a sweet birthday gift as she turns 15 on August 21. This time, she wrested the girls' Under-17 title from Hong Kong's top seed Elaine Chung Yee Ling after a tightly-fought match 11-8, 6-11, 11-2, 8-11, 12-10. The Form Three student at Ipoh's Methodist Girls' School won the title for the first time in 2022 (Under-13) and again last year (Under-15). Jinoreeka managed to pull the feat for the third time on Sunday despite having a high fever for the last three days, her father Manivannan Ramasamy said. As she has no formal coach in Malaysia, Jinoreeka sticks to a training programme designed by Egypt's squash legend Omar Abdel Aziz, following in the footsteps of her squash idol — World No. 3 Hania El Hammamy. Since 2023, Jinoreeka has trained in person with Omar in Cairo only eight times, with each trip costing around RM30,000. She also follows Omar's fitness training sessions, held online four times a week. On weekends, her parents drive down to The Lakeview Club in Subang Jaya for her sparring sessions with other local squash talents. Jinoreeka has been on a winning streak this year, after clinching the Under-15 title at the Asian Junior Championships in South Korea and the Under-17 title at the Penang Junior Open last month. She has set her sights on the 2026 British Junior Open title next and hopes to make her dream debut of representing Malaysia in the 2027 World Junior Squash Championships.

Purr-fect start for Ron

In it goes: Ronald Ngah scores his first goal with header against Kelantan during their Super League match. — Kuching City FC PETALING JAYA: Kuching City's new Cameroonian signing Ronald Ngah has announced his arrival in style with a dream debut in the Super League. The 33-year-old Ngah scored twice in a thumping 4-0 Super League win over Kelantan at the State Stadium in Kuching on Saturday. He struck in the sixth minute to calm early nerves, before sealing the rout in the 71st minute. Timor Leste winger Joao Pedro added the second in the 17th minute, while Ramadhan Saifullah wrapped things up in stoppage time to send the 8,000 home fans into raptures. Ngah was beaming after the final whistle and perfect start. Ronald Ngah 'It's every striker's wish in his debut – to score goals and I made it twice,' said the striker, who is known as Pak Ngah among the fans. 'Personally I'm happy and grateful to my teammates, coaches and fans, not leaving out the management. I thank God for this. The dominant scoreline, he said, was more than just three points, it was a statement. 'The scoreline sends a big message to everyone. But to us as a team, we've got much more to do to keep up the level and objectives we've set. We can only attain that by being committed and staying positive.' While fans are already buzzing about their upcoming clash with defending champions Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) on Aug 24, Ngah is keeping his focus on the next hurdle, an FA Cup first-leg round-of-16 match against Brunei on Aug 16 at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan. 'JDT are still far because we've got Brunei next. We take it game by game. Until then, we'll be preparing hard for our next match.' The emphatic victory under coach Aidil Sharin's guidance has given Kuching City early-season momentum and they would be out to ride on it. Meanwhile, Kelantan coach E. Elavarasan accepted the defeat gracefully. 'Kuching City were much more prepared than us. They were competitive and the team unity was solid,' said the former Malaysia Under-23 coach. 'We conceded some easy and soft goals. We were not effective upfront and the defence were not solid enough. In terms of duels, we lost most of them, Kuching were much, much better.' When asked what needs to be done by them in order to mount a stronger challenge against Immigration at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru tomorrow, Elavarasan did not mince his words. 'Our players have to show improvement if we want to do better in the league. 'We need to get better quality players into the team. The window is still on, so we will look around.'

Endrick ends journey with JDT and makes Vietnam his permanent base

PETALING JAYA: Endrick dos Santos (pic) is back in Ho Chi Minh City and this time it is for good. The naturalised Brazilian midfielder, who was linked with a move to Kuala Lumpur earlier this month, opted instead to continue his career in Vietnam's top flight. The 30-year-old Santos said he has officially parted ways with the Malaysian giants Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) to sign full-time with Ho Chi Minh City. 'I'm delighted with this opportunity and even happier that the club trust me,' said Santos, who represented the club on loan last season. 'Now with a permanent contract, I hope to perform even better than the last season and help the team with more goals and assists.' The midfielder played 24 matches last year, contributing two goals and five assists. 'Under the new management, we aim to fight at the top of the table. I'll give my best in every game to help make that happen.' Last season, Ho Chi Minh City finished 10th in the 14-team league with 28 points. Now, they are striving to challenge heavyweights such as Nam Dinh, Hanoi, and Viettel. Santos paid tribute to his time at JDT, crediting the club for shaping him into a more complete professional. 'Johor helped me grow a lot. When you train with great professionals and athletes, improvement comes naturally,' he said. 'I want to thank our boss (Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim) for the opportunity and caring for me. I wish him and JDT continued success.'
