Kota Kinabalu: A 25-year-old, charged with two counts of having drugs, was freed from the charges after full trial. Sessions Court Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad discharged and acquitted Mohd Jamri Basir, after ruling that the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt against Jamri. The court made the decision at the end of the defence stage. On the first count, Mohd Jamri was accused of having 158.6gm of cannabis at 10.30pm on May 15, 2020 at Angkasa Apartment in Jalan Tuaran Bypass, here. Advertisement Mohd Jamri was charged together with another accused Syafika Abdul Suaib who was discharged and acquitted from the charges without her defence being called but Mohd Jamri was told to enter his defence. The trial had commenced on Dec 7, 2022 and about 10 witnesses were called to testify during the prosecution's stage. During the defence's stage, the defence had called three witnesses to testify in the hearing. Couple held for series of housebreaking, robbery cases since January
MELAKA: Police have arrested a couple suspected of involvement in seven housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka and neighbouring states since January. Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the unemployed couple, aged 24 and 31, were arrested in Kuala Kurau, Perak, on June 4. "On May 28, police received two reports involving housebreaking and robbery in the Melaka Tengah district, linked to the couple. "Their modus operandi included targeting homestays and stealing various electrical appliances and furniture," he said in a statement today. Initial investigations found they were involved in three housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka Tengah, and four others in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Various items were seized, including electrical appliances, furniture, a gold bracelet, two cars, five pawnshop receipts, and five mobile phones. The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and Section 392 for robbery. In a separate development, Christopher said a clothing dealer was arrested for allegedly firing a shot from an air pistol at Jalan Johor, Semabok, on June 8. "Following intelligence gathering and a public tip-off, the 35-year-old suspect was arrested in Puchong, Selangor, on June 17. Police also seized a black bag, a silver-black air pistol bearing the inscription Pietro Beretta Gardone V.T., a speed loader, and 30 ball-bearing bullets. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until June 23 to assist in the investigation under Section 33 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief. The case is still under investigation, and police urged the public not to speculate, as it could interfere with ongoing efforts. – BERNAMA

Retiree loses over RM500,000 in fake investment scam
JOHOR BARU: A 57-year-old retiree has lost more than RM500,000 after falling victim to a fake investment scheme advertised on social media. Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the man, who previously worked in the private sector, came across an online advertisement on Facebook in March and decided to click on it. 'The victim was enticed by the promise of high returns in a short period. Believing he was investing in the scheme, he deposited a total of RM535,766 into five different bank accounts from March 13 to June 5,' he said in a statement on Saturday (June 21). ACP Mohd Sohaimi said the retiree conducted a total of 26 bank transactions. 'He realised something was wrong when he was asked to transfer more funds to cash out his profits,' he said, adding that the victim lodged a police report on Tuesday (June 17). 'The public are reminded to check unknown bank account numbers using the police's SemakMule portal because early investigations revealed that the five bank accounts involved in this case were linked to 22 other investment scam cases,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and action will also be taken against those who allow others to use their bank accounts as mule accounts.

Taiwanese model dies after receiving ‘milk injection' for insomnia

The 30-something model, known for her resemblance to actress Lin Chi-ling, underwent the procedure known as a 'milk injection' at Fairy Clinic on May 25. The anaesthetic was administered by Wu Shaohu, the clinic's director and a well-known cosmetic surgeon dubbed Taiwan's 'Godfather of Liposuction.' Wu allegedly left the clinic after the procedure, leaving an unlicensed male assistant to monitor Cai, during which an overdose is suspected due to an error in the drip rate. Cai suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest, and despite efforts via video call CPR and hospitalisation, she remained in a coma for 18 days before life support was withdrawn on June 12. Authorities have opened an investigation into Wu for possible negligence and violation of Taiwan's Medical Care Act, with propofol being tightly regulated for use only by qualified professionals.
