‘Not all households are the same' — Some Singaporeans wish CDC vouchers were given per person instead of per household

SINGAPORE: While there is no doubt that most Singaporeans are grateful for the extra help that CDC Vouchers give, in the face of high living costs, some have expressed the wish that they would be given per person instead of per household.
On Tuesday (May 13), Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that the latest tranche of CDC Vouchers worth $500 has been made available . These are part of the government's commitment to help Singaporeans cope with increased prices, especially for food and other essential items. Each household with at least one Singaporean may avail of the vouchers, which are split into $250 that may be spent at participating heartland hawkers and merchants, and the other $250 at participating grocery stores.
On Reddit, however, u/Dizzy_Boysenberry499 expressed their opinion that vouchers should be given to individuals and asked others to weigh in.
' I understand that there is much criticism about CDC vouchers. Some are more valid than others. I can accept that CDC Vouchers are given as a 'voucher' and not cash so as to ensure that spending goes to support legitimate household expenses, doesn't just flow out to support JB's economy, but to support legitimate local businesses,' they wrote.
However, they disagree with the vouchers being distributed per household, arguing that if a household has five members in one address, they take up less space but receive less voucher support.
The post author also believes that not giving out CDC Vouchers per person may end up affecting Singapore's birth rate.
' Additionally, isn't the government trying to encourage having children? I understand that a child under 18 may not need as much as an adult, but maybe we could have half the value for under 18 and full value for above 18?' they wrote.
In the same vein, there should also be extra consideration for those in the sandwich generation who are looking after their elderly relatives at home instead of entrusting them to the care of institutions. Families in these situations should also not be 'punished' with less voucher support.
The post spawned a lively discussion, with the top comment being one involving another kind of solution for high prices.
'I think most would agree. I think the real controversial opinion is on whether most need the CDC Voucher at all. Would rather they do something permanent about cost of living issues,' a Reddit user wrote.
'Totally agree. In fact, I just wrote feedback to MOF on exactly this right before I saw this thread,' chimed in another.
'Agree. Bigger families should have a higher quantum, seeing that the primary purpose of this is to aid in the costs of living,' one added.
Some, however, pointed out that individual vouchers will be distributed by July.
For many, the bigger issue is finding a more permanent solution to increased living costs.
'Just hope to earn more by myself without needing to depend on these CDC Vouchers,' one sighed, which caused another to respond with 'Yes, this is the ideal scenario for me too. I was legit happy buying fruits with the supermarket vouchers until I suddenly realised I am on 'food stamps'. That gave me a shock.' /TISG

Mali ex-prime minister to stand trial over social media post, lawyer says, World News

BAMAKO — A Malian court has detained and charged former Prime Minister Moussa Mara over a social media post criticising shrinking democratic space under military rule in the West African nation, his lawyer said late Friday (Aug 1). Mara is one of few public figures in the country who has been willing to openly question moves taken this year to dissolve political parties and grant the military government, led by Assimi Goita, a five-year mandate without elections. Last month, authorities formally approved Goita's five-year term and said it could be renewed as many times as necessary as Mali struggles to respond to a long-running jihadist insurgency. Goita assumed power after military coups in 2020 and 2021. Mara had been summoned several times for questioning this month over a social media post dated July 4 expressing solidarity with government critics who have been jailed. On July 21, his lawyer, Mountaga Tall, posted on social media site X that Mara had been barred from boarding a flight to Senegal to participate in a regional conference on peace and security. On Friday, Mara was summoned by a judicial cybercrimes unit, and a prosecutor charged him with offences including undermining the credibility of the state and spreading false information, Tall said in a statement. Mara's trial has been scheduled for Sept 29, Tall said. A government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The case against Mara comes amid worsening insecurity in Mali. The past few months have seen a surge of deadly attacks by Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked group that also operates in Burkina Faso and Niger. Analysts say the group's battlefield tactics have grown increasingly sophisticated and that it has amassed substantial resources through raids on military posts, cattle rustling, hijacking of goods, kidnappings and taxes on local communities. On Friday, the group said it had ambushed a convoy of Malian soldiers and Russian mercenaries in the Tenenkou locality in central Mali. Mali's army confirmed the ambush in a statement on X. Neither statement gave a death toll. ALSO READ: Vivian says he did not 'like' FB post offering to relocate Singaporeans to Gaza; Meta investigating

Pope Leo tells hundreds of thousands of young Catholics to build a more humane world, World News

ROME — Hundreds of thousands of young people filled a vast field on the outskirts of Rome on Saturday (Aug 2) to see Pope Leo, in the largest event yet of the new Catholic pontiff's tenure, as part of a special weekend aimed at energising Catholic youth. Young people from more than 146 countries, some wearing colourful bandanas to ward off the hot summer sun, were pressed against fences in the Tor Vergata field as Leo toured the crowd in his white popemobile in late afternoon. The pope, smiling broadly, waved, offered blessings and occasionally caught small stuffed animals and national flags thrown by the youth as he passed by. "Dear young people ... my prayer for you is that you may persevere in faith, with joy and courage," Leo said in remarks later to the crowd. "Seek justice in order to build a more humane world," he said. "Serve the poor, and so bear witness to the good that we would always like to receive from our neighbours." Many of the youth attending the event with Leo spent all day waiting in the field in heat approaching 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) to see the pope. Organisers were using water cannons to help cool down people in the crowd. "For me, it is an incredible emotion because I had never been to an event like this before," said Maya Remorini, from Italy's Tuscany region. She said her group had arrived around 5am (11am Singapore time) that morning. Many of the youth are expected to sleep in the field overnight, waiting for a second chance to see Leo on Sunday morning, when the pope is due to celebrate a Catholic mass. The weekend events are tied to the ongoing Catholic Holy Year, which the Vatican says has attracted some 17 million pilgrims to Rome since it started at the end of 2024. Leo, the first US-born pope, was elected on May 8 by the world's cardinals to replace the late Pope Francis. ALSO READ: Pope Leo calls for end to 'barbarity of war' after strike on Gaza church

Sheng Siong to open first store in Orchard by end of August, Singapore News

SINGAPORE — Supermarket operator Sheng Siong is set to open its first store in the Orchard Road area at The Cathay shopping mall. A spokesperson for the supermarket told The Straits Times that the 6,500 sq ft store is expected to open by the end of August. 'Sheng Siong previously operated a store in the Tekka area, and over the years, customers have expressed their hope for Sheng Siong to have a presence in the central area,' the spokesperson said. 'The Cathay is surrounded by residential developments, and we believe it is a convenient spot for daily grocery needs.' Renovation works for the store were first spotted in May, when a Reddit user posted photos of the ongoing construction at Basement 1 of the mall. According to Sheng Siong's website, the supermarket currently operates 82 outlets across the country, with the majority located in the north-east. The supermarket operator recorded a 6.1 per cent increase in net profit to $38.5 million for the first quarter ended March 31, from $36.3 million the year before. Revenue grew 7.1 per cent to $403 million, from $376.2 million in the corresponding period in 2024. This was thanks to contributions from eight new stores opening in the quarter and financial year 2024, as well as higher festive sales during Hari Raya in March, the company said on April 29.
