APPLE is about to show off huge free upgrades coming to millions of customers – including owners of the iPhone, iPad, AirPods, MacBook, and Apple Watch.
Eligible gadget fans will reportedly get the ability to translate foreign languages in real-time using AirPods headphones, combine multiple emoji, and unlock extra battery life without paying a penny extra.

And the way iPhone apps look may be totally revamped for the first time in over a decade.
It's all part of Apple's regular software makeover that the company hands out to gadget fans each year.
Apple is showing off the new goodies at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) during a special event at 10am in California today – that's 1pm for New Yorkers and 6pm in the UK on Monday, June 6.
And there are six major upgrades that you'll want to watch out for…
APPLE UPDATE #1 – MAJOR APP MAKEOVER
The first change to watch out for is a brand new look for your app icons.
Apple is reportedly going to switch up its design for the first time in over 10 years.
Back in 2013, Apple unleashed iOS 7, moving to a brighter and flatter design style for app icons.
Now Apple is expected to change all that with this year's update.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is going to move to a new look based on the company's Apple Vision Pro 'spatial computing' headset.
The app icons on these virtual reality goggles feature a more transparent look with a circular frame.

So expect the iPhone, iPad, and Mac to follow suit.
APPLE UPDATE #2 – APP OVERHAULS
Three apps in particular are rumoured for major overhauls.
First up is the Phone app, which is one of the best-known default Apple apps.
It's reportedly having its Favourites, Recents, and Voicemail tabs all combined into a single window.
This is meant to make life easier, but if that sounds like hell to you, there will supposedly be a way to switch it off.

Second is Safari, which is meant to be getting a slick new look (with a glossy URL bar – that's where web addresses live).
And third is Camera, which is one of the best-used Apple apps.
Over the years, it has become absolutely feature-packed. Think of all the modes: Slow-Mo, Spatial Video, Portrait, Portrait Selfie, Cinematic Video, and so on.
Apple is reportedly simplifying this with its next big update…
APPLE UPDATE #3 – NEW UPDATE NAMES
…and that update won't be iOS 19.
Instead, Apple is supposedly rebranding all of its major software names to match the years.
So iOS 19 will instead be called iOS 26. That's because it'll likely be out in September, and will then run for a full year – so most of its life will be in 2026.
Similarly, we're expecting iPadOS 19 to become iPadOS 26, and macOS 16 to instead be called macOS26.
And it's the same story for tvOS 19, watchOS 12, and visionOS 3, which will all be called '26' instead.
It should make things less confusing for, well, everyone.
APPLE UPDATE #4 – MESSAGE BETTER
Apple is also expected to dole out some new features to a fan-favourite app: Messages.
If you're a WhatsApp user, the new tricks will feel very familiar.
The first is the ability to send polls, which means you can quiz your mates on restaurant options, or have your family vote on the next holiday destination.
And second, we'll supposedly get the ability to change chat backgrounds.
So you can have something a bit more thrilling, and it'll sync for everyone in the chat.
APPLE UPDATE #5 – GAME ON!
Apple is also supposedly working on an entirely new app called Games.

Apple is reportedly building a dedicated Games app – which will also feature premium Apple Arcade titles

This will supposedly be a portal for all things gaming on the iPhone.
So it'll apparently work a bit like the App Store, as well as an access point for Apple Arcade (the premium titles accessed via a monthly subscription fee).
And it'll reportedly have Home, Arcade, Play Together, Library, and Search tabs.
APPLE UPDATE #6 – AI SEE!
Lastly, Apple looks set to debut a few new artificial intelligence tricks.
The tech titan has faced recent controversy over some AI feature delays.
So Apple is reportedly taking a gentler approach this year, with a smaller slate of features that can definitely be delivered.
The headline upgrade is a new feature that will reportedly allow Apple AirPods owners to translate foreign languages in real time. Perfect for holiday.

You'll also be able to combine two emoji (rather than just create entirely new emoji via Genmoji) for the first time.
And there's an AI-powered battery optimisation feature potentially coming too.
This will reportedly analyse your phone behaviour, and then make adjustments behind the scenes to unlock better battery life.
Sadly there's no guarantee that this will be revealed at WWDC 2025.
It's possible that Apple might save this feature (if it even exists) for the expected launch of the iPhone 17 in September.
We won't know for sure about any of these leaks until Apple makes its big announcement on stage at its Cupertino, California HQ.

WWDC: Apple faces AI, regulatory challenges as it woos software developers

CUPERTINO, California, June 9 (Reuters) - Apple is facing an unprecedented set of technical and regulatory challenges as some of its key executives are set to take the stage on Monday at the company's annual software developer conference. On the technical side, many of the long-awaited artificial-intelligence features Apple promised at the same conference a year ago have been delayed until next year, even as its rivals such as Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Google and Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab woo developers with a bevvy of new AI features. Those unfulfilled promises included key improvements to Siri, its digital assistant. On the regulatory front, courts in the U.S. and Europe are poised to pull down the lucrative walls around Apple's App Store as even some of the company's former supporters question whether its fees are justified. Those challenges are coming to a head at the same time U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened 25% tariffs on Apple's best-selling iPhone. Apple's shares are down more than 40% since the start of the year, a sharper decline than Google and also lagging the AI-driven gains in Microsoft shares. Apple has launched some of the AI features it promised last year, including a set of writing tools and image-generation tools, but it still relies on partners such as ChatGPT creator OpenAI for some of those capabilities. Bloomberg has reported that Apple may open up in-house AI models to developers this year. But analysts do not believe Apple yet has what technologists call a "multi-modal" model - that is, one capable of understanding imagery, audio and language at the same time - that could power a pair of smart glasses, a category that has become a runaway hit for Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab. Google said last month it would jump back in to this category, with partners. Such glasses, which are far lighter and cheaper than Apple's Vision Pro headset, could become useful because they would understand what the user is looking at and could help answer questions about it. While Apple has focused on its $3,500 Vision Pro headset, Google and Meta have seized on the smart glasses as a cheaper way to deploy their AI software prowess against Apple in its stronghold of hardware. Meta Ray-Bans all sell for less than $400. Analysts say Apple needs to answer that challenge but that it is not likely to do so this week. "I'm not trying to replace my phone - this is a complementary thing that gives me more world context, because it's got a camera and it sees what I see, and I can talk to it in natural language," said Ben Bajarin, CEO of technology consultancy Creative Strategies. "Apple is not positioned to do that." To be sure, Apple's rivals are not decisively ahead in smart glasses. Anshel Sag, principal analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy, said Meta's Ray-Bans still lack some features and Google has not yet landed its "Gemini" model in a mass-market pair of glasses yet. "Meta has the undisputed lead, but Google is catching up fast and probably has the best-suited AI for the job," Sag said. "Vision Pro is great, but it's a showroom product that developers can use." But Bob O'Donnell, CEO of TECHnalysis Research, said it remains far from clear that smart glasses will gain wide acceptance. O'Donnell also said it is not certain that Apple is at any particular disadvantage if it partners with a company such as Google, OpenAI or even a smaller firm like Perplexity for core AI technology. So far, O'Donnell said, there is not yet strong evidence that consumers are basing major hardware-purchasing decisions on AI features. "There's an argument to be made that it's OK that (Apple) is behind because, except for the bleeding edge, most people don't care," O'Donnell said.

Taiwan May exports hit record on AI demand and ahead of US tariffs

TAIPEI, June 9 (Reuters) - Taiwan's exports surged to a record in May on booming demand for artificial intelligence and as customers placed orders ahead of U.S. tariffs which could take effect next month after a suspension period expires. Exports increased 38.6% from the same month a year ago - the fastest pace in almost 15 years - to $51.74 billion, a record high and the first time the value of exports has exceeded $50 billion, the finance ministry said on Monday. The expansion, the 19th consecutive monthly gain, was higher than the 25% expected by economists in a Reuters poll and surpassed April's 29.9% rise. Taiwan companies such as TSMC ( opens new tab, , the world's largest contract chipmaker, are major suppliers to Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab, Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab and other tech giants. May exports benefited from continued strong AI demand and customers bringing forward orders to hedge against the possibility of increased U.S. tariffs, the ministry said in a statement. U.S. President Donald Trump planned a 32% import levy on goods from Taiwan under his global tariff regime, until he announced a 90-day pause in April to allow for trade negotiations. While AI and other new technologies should continue to support Taiwan's exports, the uncertainty surrounding the U.S. tariffs and geopolitical risks could undermine the global economic outlook, the ministry said. For June, the ministry expects exports to rise between 15% and 25% year-on-year. In May, Taiwan's exports to the United States soared 87.4% year-on-year to $15.52 billion, a record in terms of growth and value, versus a 29.5% surge in the prior month. Exports to China, Taiwan's biggest trading partner, climbed 16.6%, after rising 22.3% in April. Taiwan's total exports of electronic components gained 28.4% in May on the year to $17.2 billion, with semiconductor exports up 30.1%. Imports rose 25% to $39.13 billion, lower than economists' forecasts of 30.2%.
