Despite Weak June Performance, China Ends First Half of 2025 with Strongest Gold Price Rally in Nine Years

Despite Weak June Performance, China Ends First Half of 2025 with Strongest Gold Price Rally in Nine Years

Waleed Farouk
According to a report by Ray Jia, Head of Research, China at the World Gold Council, China concluded the first half of 2025 with its strongest gold price performance in nine years. This was supported by robust investment demand and sustained central bank purchases, despite ongoing weakness in consumer and jewelry demand.
Record Price Performance in H1 2025
The LBMA Gold Price PM in U.S. dollars rose by 23%, while the Shanghai Gold Benchmark Price (SHAUPM) in Chinese yuan climbed 21%, marking the best semi-annual performance since 2016.
This strength was driven by a weaker U.S. dollar, escalating geopolitical risks, and continued central bank buying—factors highlighted by the World Gold Council's proprietary return attribution model.
Persistent Weakness in Physical Demand
Withdrawals from the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) dropped 10% month-over-month in June to 90 tonnes.
Total H1 withdrawals stood at 678 tonnes, down 18% year-over-year and 22% below the 10-year average.
Elevated gold prices, declining consumer confidence, and ongoing restructuring of the jewelry sector weighed heavily on demand for gold products.
Retailers remained cautious with inventory restocking due to high price levels.
Even bar and coin investment saw a slowdown in June amid limited gold price fluctuations.
Record Inflows into Gold ETFs
Chinese gold-backed ETFs recorded positive inflows of CNY 1 billion (USD 137 million) in June.
The funds attracted CNY 64 billion (USD 8.8 billion) in H1 2025—the highest on record.
Total assets under management (AUM) rose to CNY 153 billion (USD 21 billion).
Combined gold holdings surged 74% to reach 200 tonnes.
Record Futures Market Activity
Though SHFE gold futures trading volume dropped 39% in June to 380 tonnes per day, the H1 daily average reached 534 tonnes, an all-time high.
High prices, market volatility, and geopolitical uncertainty drove investor activity in futures contracts.
PBOC Continues Gold Buying
The People's Bank of China (PBoC) added 2 tonnes of gold in June, marking its eighth consecutive month of purchases.
Total H1 purchases reached 19 tonnes, bringing official reserves to 2,299 tonnes.
The share of gold in total foreign reserves rose from 5.5% in December 2024 to 6.7% by June 2025.
Imports Decline
Chinese customs data showed net gold imports fell to 89 tonnes in May, down 21% month-over-month and 31% year-over-year.
The decline reflects subdued physical demand and reduced withdrawals from the SGE during the same month.
Outlook
Consumer confidence and the restructuring of China's jewelry industry will likely continue to drag down physical gold demand in H2 2025.
However, I believe investment demand for gold will remain strong, driven by global volatility, monetary policy shifts, and fluctuations in alternative asset performance.

Egyptian Reconstruction Projects in Libya Surpass USD 5 Billion

Egypt has also solidified its position as Libya's top African trading partner, with exports exceeding USD 2 billion, surpassing Libyan investments in Egypt for the first time. Jul 21, 2025 Egyptian companies have implemented reconstruction projects in Libya worth over USD 5 billion, marking a major milestone in bilateral economic cooperation. For the first time, the scale of Egyptian-led projects has exceeded the total value of Libyan investments in Egypt. The latest agreements, signed this month with Libya's Fund for Development and Reconstruction, include development works in cities such as Derna and Al-Bayda, which were among the hardest hit by Cyclone Daniel in September 2023. Egypt has also solidified its position as Libya's top African trading partner, with exports exceeding USD 2 billion. This places Egypt third among Arab exporters to Libya, behind Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Meanwhile, Libyan investment in Egypt has dropped by 25%, with 511 Libyan companies currently registered. Although these firms have declared capital totalling USD 4 billion, the actual volume of investment is estimated at USD 2.4 billion.

Surat.. From Local City to Global Diamond Capital

Waleed Farouk When the name 'Surat' is mentioned, it doesn't merely evoke a city on India's western coast in the state of Gujarat, but rather a global hub for diamond cutting and trading, a place where rough stones from the farthest corners of the world are transformed into brilliant gems adorning the world's finest jewelry houses. Diamond Polishing Industry: Global Leadership Rooted in a Local City According to recent estimates, Surat is responsible for polishing over 90% of the world's diamonds and more than 99.99% of those processed within India. This makes the city the backbone of India's gemstone exports, accounting for around 90% of the country's total diamond exports. These figures are not mere statistics; it is estimated that 9 out of every 10 diamonds sold in Manhattan's bustling markets have been polished in Surat. A Historical Journey That Began by Chance... and Grew with Opportunity Surat's journey with diamonds began in the early 20th century when two brothers from the Gujarati Patidar community returned from South Africa in 1900, bringing with them the craft of diamond polishing. However, the real turning point came post-World War II when Indian artisans fled Rangoon (now Yangon) in Myanmar during the Japanese invasion, returning to Surat and reviving the trade. Their return embedded technical expertise in the city. During the diamond demand boom in the U.S. in the 1970s and 1980s, the industry expanded rapidly, establishing Surat as a global center for diamond processing. From Traditional Craftsmanship to Advanced Technology What sets Surat's diamond industry apart is its evolution—from a purely artisan-driven craft to one embracing high-precision technology. Where polishing once relied on primitive cement wheels, today's Surat workshops are equipped with state-of-the-art laser cutting tools, aligning with international standards of quality. Family-run businesses play a crucial role in the industry, often spanning three generations under one roof, ensuring the transfer of knowledge and continuity of skill. A Global Network from Africa to Surat The journey of a diamond typically begins in mines across Africa, Russia, or Canada, then makes its way to global trade hubs such as Antwerp in Belgium, before reaching Surat. Here, over 700,000 workers in more than 6,000 manufacturing units transform rough stones into dazzling gems—an industry valued at approximately $24 billion annually. The Gujarati diaspora in Antwerp played a vital role in cementing the trade link between the two cities, creating a seamless commercial channel for rough diamond imports and global exports. A Local Economy Fueled by Industry Surat's GDP reached around $40 billion in 2016 and climbed to $57 billion by 2020, thanks to its diverse industrial base that spans textiles, petrochemicals, shipbuilding, automotive manufacturing, and ports, alongside diamonds. The diamond sector remains a cornerstone of this economy, generating hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities. Challenges of the Era: Pandemic and Demand Decline Despite its industrial strength, Surat wasn't immune to global disruptions. In 2019, India's diamond exports fell by 18% amid weakening global demand. The situation worsened in 2020 with the outbreak of COVID-19, which forced manufacturing units to halt operations for several months. However, the industry quickly bounced back, driven by renewed demand in Asian and U.S. markets and bolstered by the integration of infrastructure and skilled labor. Surat: Where Local Becomes Global In Surat, the mantra 'Think globally, act locally' comes alive. It is a city where artisanal skill meets cutting-edge technology, transforming raw stones from distant continents into jewels showcased in New York, Paris, and Tokyo. As Surat continues to cement its place as the world's diamond capital, its story stands as a testament to how a local city can emerge as a shining node on the global economic map. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

SCO partnership supports Egypt's modernization, regional stability: Chinese ambassador

The Chinese Embassy in Cairo hosted a seminar on Sunday under the theme 'Development and Impact of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO): Upholding the Spirit of Shanghai Cooperation and Advancing China-Egypt Relations with Steady Steps.' Chinese Ambassador to Cairo Liao Liqiang spoke about the SCO's evolution and its growing relevance for Egypt, emphasising China's commitment to strengthening cooperation between the organization and the Egyptian government. Founded in 2001 in Shanghai by China, Russia, Uzbekistan and other countries, the SCO has expanded from six founding members to ten, alongside observer states and partner countries. Liao highlighted that the organization is now the world's largest comprehensive regional body in terms of member states' population, land area and geographic reach—spanning Asia, Europe and Africa. The ambassador noted that Egypt became a dialogue partner of the SCO in 2022, enabling it to participate in all related dialogues and initiatives. 'The organization strives for justice and fairness—principles clearly reflected in its charter, which emphasises respect for different civilizations, shared development, dialogue, sovereignty, and resolving disputes through consultation,' he said. He added that the SCO promotes mutual benefit and regional security through confidence-building measures among member states, covering areas such as security, defence, border protection, intelligence cooperation, and countering terrorism, separatism and extremism. 'We want to strengthen cooperation with Egypt in combating terrorism,' Liao stated, underlining that the organization also supports economic growth both for its members and globally. Such cooperation, he noted, contributes to Egypt's modernization process, creates economic opportunities, and fosters dialogue between Egypt and other countries, aligning with the aspirations of the Egyptian people. This year, the SCO has prioritised sustainable development, and will hold a major summit from late August to early September expected to attract a wide range of global participants. The summit aims to enhance mutual political trust, increase trade exchanges, and boost the efficiency of cooperation mechanisms. Egypt's accession as a dialogue partner also reflects the organization's expansion into Africa and its commitment to deeper cooperation with the continent. Highlighting recent diplomatic milestones, Liao described the visit of Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Egypt as 'historic and highly significant.' It was the first visit by a Chinese premier to Egypt in 16 years and Premier Li's first stop on his inaugural trip to Africa. The ambassador said the visit demonstrates the keen interest of Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government in strengthening ties with Egypt. During his visit, Premier Li held discussions and exchanged views with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, which Liao said further reinforced the partnership between the two countries, especially given the current regional and global context.
