SHAH ALAM: More than 10 bodies, including those of infants, have been discovered during the ongoing Klang River Flood Mitigation Project, which is actively being implemented under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) initiative, Sinar Harian reports.
Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB) managing director Syaiful Azmen Nordin told the Malay language daily that the discovery of bodies is not an isolated incident, occurring almost monthly since the dredging and widening works on the river began on Nov 1, 2022.
"So far, we have handed over more than 10 bodies to the police and Fire and Rescue Department for further investigation.
"In fact, we once found three bodies consecutively," he said after visiting the SMG Flood Mitigation Project site in Zone 8 at Kota Kemuning on Monday (June 16).
He told Sinar Harian that LLSB, as the main developer of the project under SMG, also faces significant challenges as some of the bodies found include infants, making this one of the most unexpected aspects of the project implementation.
In addition to the discovery of bodies, the implementation team also encountered severe pollution, having found various types of waste and rubbish, including refrigerators, lorry tyres, beds, mattresses, sofas, and even motorcycles at the bottom of the Klang River.
"I myself do not understand how a refrigerator could end up in the river," he said, describing the existing level of pollution as serious and challenging for the dredging works.
This mitigation project is part of a holistic effort under SMG to increase the Klang River's capacity by up to 40%, as well as to restore the ecosystem and improve the water quality to Water Quality Index (WQI) Class III and above.
According to Syaiful Azmen, this project also supports the Shah Alam Sustainable Urban Drainage (SASUD) initiative and the development of a water treatment plant at Sungai Rasau, in efforts to make the Klang River a source of raw water that can be treated into drinking water.
"To date, more than 918,936 cubic metres of dredged materials such as sediment, rubbish, and rocks have been removed from the riverbed," he told Sinar Harian.
The project also involves widening the river from 50m–60m to 80m–100m, strengthening the banks using methods such as earth bunds, sheet piles, geo bags, and flood walls, and employing the latest technology in flood mitigation systems.
Currently, the project is actively being implemented in Shah Alam, covering Zones 6, 7, and 8, including areas such as Alam Impian, Section 24, Section 17, and Kota Kemuning, identified as high flood-risk locations.
LLSB assures that disruptions to the local community are minimal through measures such as alternative routes, noise and dust monitoring, and early notification to residents.
"This project not only increases river capacity and prevents flash floods but also restores the dignity of the Klang River as a valuable water resource and sustainable ecosystem," he stated.
He further added that the project implementation will continue in other areas along the Klang River based on flood risk priority and population density.
"Our challenges are not insignificant, but we are confident that this integrated approach represents the future of water management and flood mitigation in Selangor," he added.

Anwar warns against exploiting deaths of Zara Qairina and other alleged bully victims for politics

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 18 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reminded Malaysians not to take advantage of the deaths of Zara Qairina Mahathir and Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman for political or personal interests. Speaking at the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly, he said speculation and false information on social media following the incidents had unnecessarily heightened public unease. 'Social media, especially when emotions are high, can exacerbate the spread of misinformation. I have spoken in Parliament to caution against membina mahligai di pusara,' New Straits Times quoted him saying, using a Malay idiom for exploiting tragedies for gain. Anwar admitted that it is hard to control public sentiment on the social media. He cited a recent case where a person posing as a pathologist misled millions and stirred fear among families, friends, and colleagues. 'We must not exploit someone's death for political purposes or mislead the public,' he added. This comes after tens of thousands rallied nationwide over the weekend in a show of solidarity over the unsolved death of Zara Qairina. The death of 13-year-old, a SMKA Tun Mustapha student in Papar, Sabah, after an alleged bullying incident has sparked public outrage nationwide and renewed calls for safer schools. Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17 after being found severely injured and unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar at 4am on July 16. The inquest into her death begins at the Kota Kinabalu Coroner's Court in Sabah today. Meanwhile, Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman was found dead in the school toilet in Kok Lanas, Kelantan 12 years ago. Also under the spotlight was Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, a Universiti Teknologi Malaysia student who died during basic army training as a cadet in the Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) in Ulu Tiram, Johor, on July 28.

Should 'hard up for Type C dollar' be blamed for spate of Chinese mainlanders' crimes in Malaysia?

CHINA nationals have earned the wrath of a rightist Malay group following an alarming rate of indecency to their host country. This follows five crime incidents over the past one month alone which showcased their disrespect to the Malaysian law, its people and local culture. 'In just three weeks, these cases involving Chinese nationals occurred at university campus, defence centre, city street, night market and airports. They were scattered in terms of location but close in terms of time,' penned opposition-slant Gerakan Pengundi Sedar in a recent Facebook post. 'This phenomenon occurs as Malaysia is increasingly becoming a destination of choice for Chinese citizens – not only as tourists – but also as students, investors and participants in the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme.' The self-proclaimed laymen political advocate went on to cite the following incidents which coincidentally have also received media coverage: On Aug 14, a 31-year-old China national woman cursed at an immigration officer, pulled her tudung This came about after the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) found that the woman, another adult and two children did not have any record of entering Malaysia. The suspect was arrested immediately and remanded for four days. On Aug 13, a 24-year-old Chinese national woman was arrested after running amok and attacking six members of the public with a knife near Metro Point in Kajang after having rammed her vehicle into three motorcycles while yelling 'I hate Malaysia' On the same day, anti-Chinese Communist Party volunteers at the Taman Connaught night market in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (KL) claimed they were threatened by men dressed in black while distributing leaflets. On Aug 6, two Chinese nationals were arrested while flying a drone at the football field near the Wisma Pertahanan in Wangsa Maju, KL which is a restricted zone. Both men were charged at the KL Sessions Court om Aug 13 under Sections 3(a) and 4 of the Official Secrets Act (OSA) for spying and documenting within restricted areas. On July 22, Chinese national You Wei, 22, was charged t the Sessions Court in Shah Alam for stabbing compatriot Wu Jalin, 20 'Policies such as long-term visas, foreign property ownership and investment in strategic sectors have opened up economic opportunities but at the same time raise questions,' stressed Gerakan Pengundi Sedar. 'Are our screening and monitoring mechanisms strict enough to protect public safety? Are the facilities provided to attract investment and second home ownership also attracting individuals who may pose social risks?' – Aug 17, 2025 Editor's Note: The number of students from China applying to study in Malaysian universities grew by 25% in 2024, driven by a shift in global student mobility. Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) said international students, including from China, are shifting away from the world's 'Big Four' study destinations: the UK, US, Australia and Canada. 'More students are exploring dynamic and diverse destinations across Asia. Malaysia is one of the top destinations,' it told The Star. EMGS which is under the purview of the Higher Education Ministry said its data shows that students from China continued to top the list of study applications to Malaysia at 33,216 in 2024 compared to 26,627 applications in 2023. Other top applications came from Bangladesh (6,917), Indonesia (5,556), India (2,591) and Pakistan (2,417).
