MP mountaineer claims he missed top sports award due to officials negligence

News185 days ago
Indore, Aug 7 (PTI) Mountaineer Madhusudan Patidar, who climbed Mount Everest at the age of 20, on Thursday alleged that he missed the top sports award of Madhya Pradesh due to the negligence of government officials.
An official, however, said the `Vikram Award' is given on the basis of achievements in the preceding five years, and Patidar had reached the summit of the world's highest peak eight years ago, in 2017.
On Patidar's petition, the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday stayed the conferment of the award for 2023 in the category of adventure sports to another mountaineer, Bhavana Dehariya.
Dehariya too has climbed Mount Everest.
The High Court issued the interim stay order a few hours before the award distribution ceremony on Tuesday evening.
Speaking at a press conference in Indore on Thursday, Patidar (29) said he had reached the summit of Everest on May 21, 2017, at the age of 20. To finance the expedition, he had mortgaged his house and taken a loan which he is still repaying, he said.
'The first Vikram Award in adventure sports was given for 2021. No player was given the award in the category for 2022. Deharia's name was declared for the 2023 award even though she had reached the summit of Everest in 2019, two years after me," he said.
Officials ignored his seniority, and thus deprived him of the award, he claimed.
Sports minister Vishwas Sarang told PTI that the government will present its side in the High Court. 'Whatever the decision of the court may be, we will follow it. Injustice will not be allowed to happen to any player." A government official said that awards in the field of sports are given on the basis of special achievements in the preceding five years. In Patidar's case, he had reached the summit of Everest eight years ago.
The official cited the Madhya Pradesh Award Rules 2021 in this regard.
Under the rules, the award in the adventure sports category is given on the basis of 'achievement and seniority", he said.
Dehariya (33) said she met all the criteria for the Vikram Award, and is going through a lot of mental agony as it was not given to her at the last moment.
'I had reached the Shikhar Khel Alankaran ceremony to receive the award, but at the last moment sports department officials informed me about the High Court's stay order," she said, adding that she was confident of getting justice from the court.
The next hearing is scheduled for September 17.
The award consists of Rs 2 lakh and a memento. Its recipients are also given government jobs. PTI HWP MAS KRK

Chennai Grand Masters Chess: Vincent Keymer, Arjun Erigaisi Play Out Draw

Indian ace Arjun Erigaisi held tournament leader Vincent Keymer to a hard-fought draw in the marquee sixth round clash at the Chennai Grand Masters chess tournament in Chennai on Tuesday. The result allowed the German GM to maintain his one-point lead at the top of the Masters standings after six rounds, with Arjun remaining in hot pursuit. In another key result, 22-year-old GM Awonder Liang of the United States defeated 18-year-old Pranav V in a much-anticipated battle, moving level on points with Arjun and adding fresh intrigue to the chase for the title. Now in its third year, the Chennai Grand Masters is India's strongest classical chess event. It features two elite 10-player round-robin sections -- Masters and Challengers -- across nine rounds in 10 days. With a Rs 1 crore prize pool, the Masters winner earns Rs 25 lakh, the Challengers winner Rs 7 lakh and a 2026 Masters berth. The event also offers FIDE Circuit points, with the Masters champion securing 24.5 toward 2026 Candidates qualification. Unbeaten so far, Keymer opened with the Queen's Pawn, quickly transposing into a Queen's Gambit by move two, while Arjun responded with the Slav Defense. The German seized the early momentum, but Arjun clawed his way back, ensuring the pace-setter didn't turn into a runaway leader. Elsewhere in the Masters, Vidit Gujrathi and Anish Giri settled for a draw, while Jorden van Foreest bounced back with a win as Black against Nihal Sarin. Karthikeyan Murali, too, held Ray Robson to a draw. In the Challengers, M Pranesh halted leader Abhimanyu Puranik's unbeaten run, turning what had looked like a one-man march into a tight three-way fight for the title. The victory brought Pranesh level with Abhimanyu at the top, where they were joined by Leon Luke Mendonca after his win over Aryan Chopra. GM Harika Dronavalli prevailed against compatriot Vaishali Rameshbabu in the all-women Grandmaster clash, while Adhiban Baskaran outplayed Diptayan Ghosh to climb up the standings. Pa Iniyan and Harshavardhan GB split the point after a draw.

India's lone female driver in Asia Pacific Rally Championship, Nikeeta Takale aspires to shine in WRC and Dakar

The only Indian female driver in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC), Nikeeta Takale, who won three podiums in the Sumatera Utara Rally, aspires to participate in the World Rally Championships and the gruelling Dakar Rally after achieving success. Takale, with her co-driver Sudhindra BG won three titles in the third round of APRC which concluded on Sunday, bagging APRC RC4 class, APRC Ladies Class and Sumatera Rally RC4 category. Her exploits have made her eligible to participate in the APRC Finals in Japan scheduled for November 6-8. 'This is my second APRC because two years back, I got qualified in India. But due to some reasons, I could not go to the finals. But this time I made it over here. And Japan is 100 per cent on track,' she told PTI. 'Being in the sport, everyone's goal. This is the dream come true rally for me, the APRC, which I had dreams of in 2022. So, step by step, I really want to do many more internationals. 'I want to gain more experience. I want to train with big trainers. And then obviously the WRC is my dream to drive,' Takale added. Takale, who began her motorsports journey in 2016, was inspired by her uncle, veteran rally driver Sanjay Takale, though she admits they rarely spoke about the sport. 'My first ever autocross I did when I wasn't even 18 years old. I took a three year gap but In 2021, there was autocross back in Pune, when I came there,' she said. 'In that autocross, I got the best amateur, the fastest driver amongst the guys. So that was the real energy that I got that yes, I have to be there in this sport. And that encouraged me a lot.' Takale, representing JK Racing, won her 100th podium in career after winning this rally and wants to increase the number further. 'I started my career in 2021 and it has been up and down,' said the 24-year-old, who is being supported by Vamcy Merla Motorsports. 'I got an opportunity for the Rally Star Hunt event, in which I was selected from Bangalore. So I was very happy. I kept winning, I kept putting my efforts. I had made a century in my podiums after winning this rally.' Takale also emphasised that motorsport is about more than just speed. 'The sport is not only about driving fast. It needs too many techniques. You need to learn the track. As with the track, your driving changes. And yes, I did train. I've trained with many different trainers from India. It has changed me a lot. I have become a more technical and professional driver now,' she said. Takale credits her father and husband as the two key figures behind her continued success in the sport. 'I'm a married woman who's there in motorsports now. If he (husband) wasn't, in these four years, I do not think I would have got into motorsports. It's been one and a half year, I can say now. The moment I entered motorsports, I gave in,' she said. 'No, he always tells me, whenever you take the name motorsports, keep me away. You please go enjoy, because he's a person who loves cars a lot. It's like you're destroying the car. So we are two different personalities in one house. 'For me, to start my motorsports career, the only man behind me was my dad, till the date and will always be him. The second man in my life was my husband. And he will obviously support me till I achieve my dreams.' Related Topics World Rally Championship

Mohammad Rizwan In Disbelief After Getting Out For Golden Duck

Rizwan came out to bat at No. 4 for Pakistan in the 295-run chase on Tuesday but got out on the first ball. Mohammad Rizwan came out to bat at No. 4 for Pakistan on Tuesday (August 12) against the West Indies in the third and final ODI of the ongoing three-match series, but he failed to open his account even in the series decider and got out for a first-ball duck. The captain of Pakistan's ODI side was clean bowled by fast bowler Jayden Seales, who then also picked up Babar Azam's wicket. The former Pakistani all-format captain could only manage to score nine runs from 23 balls. He was trapped in front of the wickets by Seales on the second ball of the ninth over of the run chase. Pakistani fans and team management had high expectations from Rizwan in the third ODI after the hosts rode on captain Shai Hope's unbeaten 120-run knock to post a total of 294 runs on the board for the loss of six wickets in 50 overs. But unlike Hope, Rizwan couldn't do anything in the match where his side needed him the most. The clip of his stunned reaction after getting clean bowled by Seales was shared by fans on X, and within no time it went viral on the internet. Hope, who is leading the West Indies in the third ODI against Pakistan, completed his 18th ODI century in 83 balls. He has scored five centuries in the 50-over format of the game as the skipper of the two-time ODI World Cup winners. During his 17-year-long ODI career, Lara played 125 ODIs as captain of the West Indies and scored five centuries, whereas Hope has scored five centuries in just 38 matches as captain.
