MP mountaineer claims he missed top sports award due to officials negligence
Indore, Aug 7 (PTI) Mountaineer Madhusudan Patidar, who climbed Mount Everest at the age of 20, on Thursday alleged that he missed the top sports award of Madhya Pradesh due to the negligence of government officials. An official, however, said the `Vikram Award' is given on the basis of achievements in the preceding five years, and Patidar had reached the summit of the world's highest peak eight years ago, in 2017. On Patidar's petition, the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday stayed the conferment of the award for 2023 in the category of adventure sports to another mountaineer, Bhavana Dehariya. Dehariya too has climbed Mount Everest. The High Court issued the interim stay order a few hours before the award distribution ceremony on Tuesday evening. Speaking at a press conference in Indore on Thursday, Patidar (29) said he had reached the summit of Everest on May 21, 2017, at the age of 20. To finance the expedition, he had mortgaged his house and taken a loan which he is still repaying, he said. 'The first Vikram Award in adventure sports was given for 2021. No player was given the award in the category for 2022. Deharia's name was declared for the 2023 award even though she had reached the summit of Everest in 2019, two years after me," he said. Officials ignored his seniority, and thus deprived him of the award, he claimed. Sports minister Vishwas Sarang told PTI that the government will present its side in the High Court. 'Whatever the decision of the court may be, we will follow it. Injustice will not be allowed to happen to any player." A government official said that awards in the field of sports are given on the basis of special achievements in the preceding five years. In Patidar's case, he had reached the summit of Everest eight years ago. The official cited the Madhya Pradesh Award Rules 2021 in this regard. Under the rules, the award in the adventure sports category is given on the basis of 'achievement and seniority", he said. Dehariya (33) said she met all the criteria for the Vikram Award, and is going through a lot of mental agony as it was not given to her at the last moment. 'I had reached the Shikhar Khel Alankaran ceremony to receive the award, but at the last moment sports department officials informed me about the High Court's stay order," she said, adding that she was confident of getting justice from the court. The next hearing is scheduled for September 17. The award consists of Rs 2 lakh and a memento. Its recipients are also given government jobs. Bhopal: Chief minister Mohan Yadav emphasised that true players establish the highest benchmarks in life. Success in sports and other life domains should stem from their bravery and determination. He shared these thoughts while addressing the awards ceremony for Madhya Pradesh 'Shikhar Khel Alankaran' (top sports awards) and 38th National Games 2025 medallists at Ravindra Bhavan on Tuesday. Dr Yadav affirmed the state govt's dedication to sports advancement, ensuring athletes receive essential support. He noted Madhya Pradesh's consistent sporting achievements. During the ceremony, he presented awards to medallists from both competitions, congratulated the recipients, and participated in a group photograph with the successful athletes. The ceremony included the presentation of the state's National Games trophy to CM Yadav. The Vikram Award recipients received Rs 2 lakh each. The awardees included Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Janhavi Srivastava, Ragini Marco, Shivani Pawar, Shruti Yadav, Yamini Maurya, Sachin Bhargo, Neelu Dadiya, Praveen Kumar Dave, Rubina Francis, and Apurv Dubey from various disciplines. The Vishwamitra Award, carrying Rs 2 lakh each, was presented to trainers Pijush Kanti Baroi, Ashok Kumar Yadav, and Lokendra Sharma. The Lifetime Achievement Award, also with Rs 2 lakh, went to gymnastics expert Ratanlal Verma. The ceremony recognised 82 medallists from the 38th National Games 2025, including 34 gold, 25 silver, and 23 bronze winners across 18 sports, with total prize money of Rs 546 lakh. The event saw substantial attendance from the sporting community. State sports minister Vishwas Sarang highlighted how the state's young athletes have earned recognition nationally and internationally. He expressed optimism about improved performance in future National Games, aiming for Madhya Pradesh to achieve the top position. Sarang noted CM Yadav's commitment to sports development through his initiative to construct sports stadiums in every assembly constituency. Notable attendees included Madhya Pradesh Olympic Association president Ramesh Mendola, secretary Digvijay Singh, principal secretary Manish Singh and deputy secretary Ajay Srivastava. Sports department director Rakesh Gupta delivered the welcome address while joint director B L Yadav offered the vote of thanks.

MP High Court stays conferment of top sports award to mountaineer
Agency: PTI Indore, Aug 5 (PTI) The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday granted temporary stay to the conferment of the Vikram Award for 2023 in adventure sports category to mountaineer Bhavna Dehariya on a petition filed by another senior climber, Madhusudan Patidar. Justice Pranay Verma of the Indore bench of the High Court passed the order hours before the state government's Shikhar Khel Alankaran ceremony was to be held in Bhopal. Dehariya was to be given the award, the top sports honour of the Madhya Pradesh government, at the function. Patidar, a resident of Indore, claimed in his petition that the award in the category of adventure sports should have been given to him on the basis of seniority, as per the rules. The HC issued a notice to the state government and Dehariya, seeking a reply within four weeks. The judge ordered the government not to award Dehariya the award till the next hearing, likely to be held on September 17. Every year, 12 senior players who have excelled in different sports are awarded the Vikram Award which comprises Rs 2 lakh and a memento. Award-winners are also given government jobs.
