Houston Cougars face Purdue in Sweet 16
Why it matters: A win advances the Coogs to their first Elite Eight appearance since 2022 and continues the road to their first national championship contention since the Phi Slama Jama era of the 1980s.
Catch up quick: The Cougars (32-4) fought their way through the first two rounds of this year's tournament, beating Gonzaga and SIU Edwardsville to extend their win streak to 15 games heading into Friday's contest.
Flashback: The team has played in March Madness since 2018 and secured its third-straight No. 1-seed berth this year.
They made it to the Final Four in 2021, the Elite Eight in 2022, and Sweet 16 in both 2023 and 2024.
Friction point: Purdue's promising offense will be quite the test for the Cougars' stellar defense.
The game is at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium, a quick 80-mile trip for Purdue and their fans.
While the stadium is technically a neutral site, the setting essentially hands a home-court advantage to Purdue.
The Boilermakers have won eight of 11 games played in Indianapolis.
What they're saying:"They'd be tough to beat no matter where we play them," Coogs head coach Kelvin Sampson said Thursday. "We've got a tremendous challenge in front of us."

Former Spartans star signs with Polish basketball club
A pair of former Spartans are linking up in Poland. Former Spartans big man Kenny Goins has reportedly signed with the Polish club Trefl Sopot. According to 247Sports' reporter Stephen Brooks, Goins will be joining the same club as former Spartans big man Szymon Zapala. Goins played for the Spartans from 2015 to 2019, where he played a big part in the Spartans winning a pair of Big Ten titles and reaching the Final Four in 2019. It was his shot against Duke in the Elite Eight that propelled the Spartans to the Final Four that season. Since leaving Michigan State, Goins has primarily played in Europe. According to Basketball Reference, Goins has played a pair of seasons in the Greek Basketball League and one year in the France LNB Pro A. He will now be heading to Poland and play alongside a fellow former Spartan. Purdue Boilermakers snuck an awesome Drew Brees Easter egg into sports logo redesign
Now this is cool. Drew Brees always looked his best in black and gold -- not just in his New Orleans Saints career, but at the college level with his Purdue Boilermakers, too. And his alma mater snuck in a fantastic Easter egg as a nod to the legendary quarterback in a recent refresh for their athletics logos. Purdue's hardhat-wearing mascot, aptly named Purdue Pete, hasn't changed much through the years. But back in April the school introduced a new set of logos for the Boilermakers' golf, basketball, and football teams, each featuring Purdue Pete competing in those sports. And they picked a great pose for the windup to throw a football, perfectly emulating Brees' own signature throwing motion. Every quarterback has their own technique. Some lift the ball high above their head, others prefer more of a sidearm, or a counterbalance with their off-hand. Brees has talked about changing his throwing motion after turning pro, widening his feet to produce a quicker release. With his left hand splayed and lining up with his forward planted leg, Brees drove off his back foot to push the ball downfield. It's a technique that won him the all-time NFL passing yards record, among dozens of others, before he called it a career. Now he's up for enshrinement at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And it's a really nice gesture from Purdue's athletics department. Brees led the Boilermakers to hard-fought wins over Michigan, Northwestern, and Ohio State in 2000, which earned Purdue's first Rose Bowl invitation since 1967. Brees left college with Big Ten conference records in everything from passing yards to touchdown passes, and he was inducted to the school's Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame back in 2009. Not bad for someone a lot of people said was too short to play QB.
