BLUE BEETLE Star Xolo Maridueña Gives Update on the Future of His Character in the DCU — GeekTyrant
This film featured the first live-action Latin superhero to headline his own major studio film, and it was a lot of fun! The movie didn't take itself as seriously as many of the DC flops that came before it, and Maridueña gave a great performance. But we don't know when we will see him back in live-action.
Last year, Warner Bros. announced that Blue Beetle would be getting an animated series, so the character does have something in the works, but we would still like to know how he will fit in Gunn's DCU. Maridueña gave an update on both fronts during recent appearances promoting the Smurfs movie, in which he is playing Brainy Smurf.
In an interview with ScreenRant, the actor said of the animated show:
"The universe is cracked open. Pandora's Box is open, for lack of a better word. I love the animation medium. I love getting to continue to explore and try my best to fit this character. Having already done Blue Beetle, I know the character and know the voice now. I'm excited to see him in the actual format of animation, and to see what stories we can tell that we can't tell in live-action... I'm excited to see how Blue Beetle fits in."
Maridueña also spoke with a YouTube personality (via CBM) while making the interview rounds, where he again touched on the future of Blue Beetle:
"James Gunn, Peter Safran, John Rickard- everybody over at DCU has been so kind in welcoming into the DCU. They just had a really awesome release, and I'm really excited that this is an awesome first step in the direction of opening up that universe," said Maridueña, referencing Superman's opening weekend domestic release.
He continued:
"We've got some animated stuff, some live-action stuff- a whole bunch of areas that Blue Beetle and the greater Reyes family can join in, so I'm blessed. I'm just hoping that it can be with Ángel Manuel Soto- that's my guy."
We will just have to wait and see what happens with the character, but at least we know he's in the mix and his future is being considered at DC.

For Superman, sequels are kryptonite
James Gunn's pointedly bright, colorful, canine-forward new movie, 'Superman,' is the second launch in a dozen years of a new shared cinematic universe wherein the superhero in chief is gradually — or in this case, immediately — surrounded by other DC Comics heroes. This summer's big tentpole from DC's rival, Marvel Studios, 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' is proof enough that while DC has struggled to match Marvel's success building a multifilm series spotlighting even its C- and D-list superheroes, Marvel's page-to-screen track record is far from what a comic book collector would call mint. The Pedro Pascal- and Vanessa Kirby-starring 'First Steps,' which opened Thursday, is the fourth attempt to launch a Fantastic Four movie franchise since 1994.

Kevin Costner's ambitious Western is underrated — watch it now on HBO Max (July 25-27)
Several of Warner Bros.' biggest releases of 2025 are streaming on HBO Max. A Minecraft Movie, the third-highest-grossing movie of 2025, and Sinners, Ryan Coogler's critically acclaimed vampiric horror, are occupying the first two spots in the top 10. Beyond the top 10, there are a plethora of underrated movies worthy of your time. Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is much better than the mixed reviews it received at the time of its release. This weekend, give Horizon and these two underrated movies a shot. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary (2024) Christopher Cross. Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins. Steely Dan. Toto. These five musicians and bands helped pioneer a genre of music that became known as yacht rock. Developed in the late '70s and early '80s, yacht rock is a West Coast sound that infused soulful vocals with easy-listening lyrics. Yacht rock is a combination of soft pop, jazz, R&B, and funk. Yacht rock's popularity exploded in the mid-1980s, but by the end of the decade, it began to lose its stranglehold on pop culture. That's when an unlikely ally — hip hop artists — began sampling yacht rock beats in their songs, which led to a resurgence in the genre. Yacht Rock: A Documentary is an informative exploration into a genre that deserves much more credit for its significant impact on the music industry. Stream Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary on HBO Max. Blue Beetle (2023) Blue Beetle was one of DC's casualties in 2023. James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new heads of DC Studios, clearly wanted the 2023 slate — Shazam 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 — to disappear and make way for the new DC Universe. That being said, Blue Beetle displayed the most potential, which is probably why an animated series was greenlit. Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña as Jamie Reyes, a recent college graduate who becomes the Blue Beetle after fusing with the Scarab. The Scarab encases Jamie in an armored exoskeleton with superpowers, including flight, strength, and agility. Despite his initial hesitation, Jamie comes to accept his newfound abilities and embraces his new calling. On its surface, Blue Beetle is a superhero adventure, but the movie works best as a grounded family drama thanks to its terrific cast. Stream Blue Beetle on HBO Max. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024) Kevin Costner has become the butt of a lot of jokes for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. Costner personally funded $38 million of the $100 million budget shared by the first two films. His ambition may have gotten the better of him, considering Chapter 1 flopped at the box office, and Warner Bros. removed Chapter 2 from its release calendar. All that being said, I'm glad Horizon exists because there are moments in this film — including the Apache raid and Hayes' confrontation with Caleb — that are pure cinematic magic. A Western about life on the American frontier is in Costner's wheelhouse. Mr. Costner, please sell the rights to Netflix to release the next three chapters. Stream Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 on HBO Max.

‘Peacemaker' Came to Comic-Con to Tease the End of Its Own Universe
The most in-your-face explanation for what's going on with Peacemaker in the new DCU can be found outside of San Diego Comic-Con. Simply put—as soon as you walk in past the HBO Max activation marquee for the Peacemaker 'Peacefest' in the Gaslamp District, you see a sign that reads, 'Relax, it's a state of emergency; you're fucked', dude.' io9 was invited to scope out the space, which allowed for some rocking fun as you walk in through a Quantum Portal into the 'altered dimension' of the Peacemaker universe. Hmm, we suspect Lex Luthor's pocket dimension, and that crack Clark and Mr. Terrific noticed at the end of Superman, might have something to do with this. The timed experience gives you a chance to look at some of the props for the series, which returns August 21 on HBO Max. One of the major things we noticed right away was the giant Mighty Crabjoys poster adorning one of Peacemaker's helmet walls, so we at least get the sense that Superman might not be the only person in their fan club. Which really, lucky for Peacemaker, in case he needs help from Big Red whenever Rick Flagg Sr. finally gets around to revenge. Peacefest also invited con attendees to get their rock show on to the show's theme song with a live band, while stations offered the usual photo-ops, drinks, and some Mortal Kombat stations to celebrate Peacemaker's addition to the roster for Mortal Kombat 1. One of the signs our Peacemaker friends might be in danger was also literally this TV under a 'Lost and Found' sign with an arrow pointing to the show playing on a real fuzzy and deteriorating VHS tape. It was, however, the closing song that gave way to some really distressing spoiler-ish answers. As the show ended, the band left, but Peacemaker sent a message to GTFO while another flashed across his face: 'Warning: Alternate Dimension Collapsing.' We know season 2 is going to be dealing with bridging the gap between the old DCU and DC Studios' post-Superman, canon, but this makes it feel like stakes are going to be very dire as Peacemaker tries to make it over to the new normal in one piece… especially as we know there's going to be some Peacemaker vs. Peacemaker shenanigans as well. We'll find out more at the San Diego Comic-Con panel later this week! Check out the gallery below for more hints and a look inside Peacefest. Stay tuned here at io9 for more SDCC '25 and Peacemaker coverage. Want more io9 news?
