'We tackle poverty, not politicise it,' Robert tells Umno Youth

Borneo Post19-05-2025

Robert Tawik
KOTA KINABALU (May 19): Assistant Works Minister Datuk Robert Tawik has hit back strongly at Umno Sabah Youth chief Sufian Abdul Karim, rejecting claims that the government efforts to assist padi farmers are nothing more than 'empty promises.'
He accused the opposition of weaponising rural poverty for political mileage.
'We don't politicise poverty. We tackle it. While others hold press conferences and throw accusations, we're working with farmers on the ground to deliver actual, measurable improvements,' he said in a statement today.
Sufian had earlier lambasted Robert for allegedly using the plight of farmers to bolster his political standing without offering real solutions — a charge Robert dismissed as baseless and opportunistic.
Robert defended the government's ongoing initiatives, including the RM36 million allocation under IADA Kota Belud, saying that substantial work is already underway.
'That RM36 million is not a prop for headlines. It is already being disbursed for concrete initiatives – from flood mitigation and drainage upgrades to land rehabilitation. These are physical works that farmers can see and benefit from,' he said.
He also pointed out that while critics are quick to throw stones, they often ignore the systemic issues that have long plagued Sabah's padi sector.
'Everyone wants instant results, but we are cleaning up decades of neglect. Fixing broken irrigation systems, reclaiming fallow land and building sustainable farm infrastructure takes time and coordination – not political noise,' he added.
Addressing Sufian's criticism of Sabah's rice self-sufficiency level (SSL), which stands at 22.8% for 2024, Robert said it was dishonest to cherry-pick statistics without context.
'It's misleading to point to SSL as a sign of failure without acknowledging how much Sabah relies on Federal policies and decades of underinvestment. SSL is not a one-man problem and certainly not something fixed with slogans,' he said.
He accused Sufian of trying to rewrite history and deflect from the failures of previous administrations.
'Who was in power when drainage systems failed and land was left idle? Who ignored infrastructure in rural Sabah for years while focusing on grand political shows? We are now paying the price for that neglect,' he said.
Robert also took exception to Sufian's remarks comparing development work to 'launch ceremonies,' calling it an insult to the farmers who partner with the government to improve their livelihoods.
'Don't belittle the farmers by suggesting that all they see are ceremonies. They know what real progress looks like. We are empowering them with better access, better tools and better infrastructure. If you don't see it, it's because you're too busy campaigning,' he said.
Robert called for unity and warned against using farmers as political pawns.
'We are ready to work with anyone who genuinely wants to uplift the farming community – but not with those who see every issue as a photo opportunity or political football. This isn't about who can shout louder, it's about who delivers,' he said.

Federal projects in Sabah must follow set schedule

Published on: Thursday, June 05, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 05, 2025 By: R Gonzales Text Size: 'I am satisfied with the cooperation shown by all parties involved in this intervention committee,' Ewon said. KOTA BELUD: Development projects in Sabah funded by the Federal Government must be implemented according to the set schedule. Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said this is to ensure that all projects in the pre-implementation phase are initiated by the respective committees involved. Ewon, who serves as co-chairman of the Federal-State Sabah Development Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee together with Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said the committee is tasked with ensuring that all projects in the pre-implementation category can be initiated. 'Once the projects are handed over to the implementing agencies and contractors, monitoring will continue through other platforms such as the Development Action Committee Meetings,' he said after officiating the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Kampung Podos open hall, here. Ewon was commenting on the latest developments in the meeting of the Federal-State Sabah Development Programme and Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee. He said the Special Intervention Meetings, which began earlier this year, have shown positive results. 'Many technical and administrative issues have been resolved more quickly through direct engagement between implementing agencies, ministries and the State Government,' he said. Based on the report presented at the Sabah Federal-State Development Project Monitoring Coordination Meeting last May, the number of projects in pre-implementation status has been reduced from 207 projects to 137 projects. Ewon described the decline as a positive development resulting from collaboration among various parties. 'We have proposed several steps to the technical departments and project-owning ministries to ensure that emerging issues are discussed and resolved promptly. I also hope that the percentage of projects that have commenced will continue to increase at the upcoming meetings,' he said. He expressed appreciation to all ministries, the State Government and the technical departments that have successfully expedited the processes of procurement, contractor appointments and tenders for previously uninitiated projects. 'I am satisfied with the cooperation shown by all parties involved in this intervention committee,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Yong slams DBKK over tax move

Published on: Monday, June 02, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 02, 2025 Text Size: Yong called on DBKK to adjust its mindset and stop aligning with Federal LHDN enforcement while the billions owed to this region remain unpaid. Kota Kinabalu: Former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee criticised City Hall (DBKK) for assisting Federal tax authorities in pursuing small traders while the State is denied billions in constitutional revenue. 'Why is DBKK playing Federal tax collector role?' Yong said in a statement, here, Sunday, condemning DBKK's collaboration with the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) in targeting hawkers labelled as 'inactive' taxpayers. He said LHDN collected RM5.7 billion from Sabah in 2024 and targets RM6.2 billion for 2025, averaging RM6 billion annually. 'This excludes other tax revenues collected by Customs and other Federal agencies in Sabah. Despite these substantial collections, Sabah has not received its rightful 40 per cent constitutional share amounting to RM2.4 billion from the RM6 billion in tax revenues. Instead, Sabah receives only an interim payment of RM600 million, a figure plucked from nowhere,' he said. Yong said there is absolutely no reason for the Federal Government to delay making annual payments of at least RM2 billion to the Sabah Government. He said the targeted hawkers and micro businesses are not major tax evaders but small, informal traders already battling rising costs, subsidy cuts and declining purchasing power. 'Enforcing tax compliance in this climate, while RM2 billion in Sabah's share remains unreturned, only worsens economic fragility and damages local economic resilience,' he said. He called on DBKK to adjust its mindset and stop aligning with Federal LHDN enforcement while the billions owed to this region remain unpaid. 'DBKK should not contradict its role as a local government agency in uplifting livelihoods in Kota Kinabalu city,' he said. Yong said until the Federal Government honours the 40 per cent entitlement without further delay, tax enforcement in this region should be re-evaluated, paused if necessary and guided by consultation with the Sabah Government and Sabah business organisations. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
