Katie McCabe reveals football role model growing up

Extra.ie4 hours ago
Katie McCabe has opened up about her lack of female football role models growing up, revealing that she was mainly involved with the boys.
The Arsenal and Republic of Ireland winger recently lifted the Women's Champions League trophy with Arsenal earlier this year, and is regarded as one of the best players in the Women's Super League and in the country.
Despite her reputation as a fearless winger, Katie spoke about growing up with a lack of female role models in football, saying that growing up, she mostly played with the schoolboys — and as for a football role model, she grew up idolising fellow left wing Dubliner, Damien Duff. 'There was no role model,' Katie told Westlife singer (and former Leeds United goalkeeper!) Nicky Byrne on his podcast. 'My role model growing up was Damien Duff, I loved him. I loved the left foot — obviously, I'm left footed — he was the left wing, he was number 11; that's what I am now, a women's version. That's what I aspired to be like.'
Katie said that despite the women's game being popular now, it wasn't nearly as popular when she was growing up; with her saying that she followed the men's team for most of her childhood and didn't even know what the women's leagues looked like, with her playing alongside the boys when she was a kid.
'I was always with the boys, just playing football for hours after school,' she said. 'My ambitions when I was young, was looking at teams lift the Champions League trophy — it was always the men's Champions League trophy. I didn't even know what the women's Champions League trophy looked like.' Katie eventually found out what the trophy looked like and even got to lift it after Arsenal beat Barcelona in the Women's UCL final; adding 'to do that in May, with Arsenal, a club like that, was unbelievable.'
The winger lifted the UCL trophy with Arsenal back in May, and speaking ahead of the new season for Arsenal and as captain of the Republic of Ireland women's team during their match with Belgium in October, she took issue with the Irish manager Carla Ward's comments that she may be on the verge of burnout following her playing for the country just days after the win.
'I wasn't on the verge of burnout, I could have played three days later,' Katie said. 'I just chose to enjoy the break. It wasn't necessary for me to travel to the USA. But I feel good, I feel great, and I was happy with the decision I took, and I was supported by Carla.' 'It was nice to be able to switch off and refocus, reset and recharge the batteries. I'm now about a week or two into pre-season and ready to get going again. I think it's going to be an exciting year.
'We've got the Champions League trophy to defend and want to keep pushing on all fronts and all competitions with Arsenal. I'm feeling really good and ready to have another big push this year.'

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast with Gary Lineker, the former midfielder opened up about the trauma of both kidnappings, revealing he didn't even tell his manager about the second one. Mikel, now retired, explained the first incident happened when he was playing for Chelsea under boss Andre Villas-Boas. He said: 'My dad has his own business now which I helped him set up, and he was driving home from work with his driver. Advertisement 'A car pulled over in front of them with guns and everything — they got out and took him away.' "I remember AVB asked me, 'Do you want to play the game or not?. "I was finally back in the team, I was playing well — so I told him I'd think about it. "In the end I decided to play but the whole family was crying on the phone." Advertisement Mikel said the negotiations felt 'like buying a car,' with back-and-forth demands until they agreed on a fee. He added: 'I got on the phone with the kidnappers after. It was horrible, my dad was screaming, telling me, 'Whatever they want, just give it to them." remier League stars claim they are being 'held hostage' in 'abandoned airport for 12 hours with no food and water' "I wired the money back home, my brother withdrew it and they were told where to drop it off. They said come back in 30 minutes.' The second kidnapping came when dad Michael was snatched before Nigeria's World Cup match against Argentina. 'My brother said, 'We weren't going to tell you, but we have to, it's happened again. Dad has been kidnapped." Mikel revealed he was torn on whether to tell anyone, adding: 'I sat there for 30 minutes thinking, 'Should I tell the coach? Should I tell the team?' "In the end, I decided not to. I went out and played.' Anthony Stokes' rise and fall as he signs for Conor McGregor's football team

It is 21 years since Arsene Wenger beat a host of top figures in football to the signature of hot prospect Anthony Stokes and since then the life and times of the Dubliner have made for breathless reading. There have been successful periods in a career that has taken in Premier League and SPL appearances, nine senior Ireland caps and plenty of silverware. But sadly the father of three has made plenty of headlines for his off the pitch antics too, and he's back in the news after posting on Instagram a screenshot confirming that he has joined Conor McGregor's Black Forge FC team. Here Mirror Sport provides a timeline of Stokes' on and off field activities in a rollercoaster time in the game. 2004: The in-demand teenager joined Arsenal from Shelbourne schoolboys. 2005: Made first team debut for Arsenal off the bench in a League Cup win over Sunderland. 2006: Scored 16 goals in 18 games for Falkirk in the SPL, earning two young player of the month awards. Made Ireland under-21 debut. Anthony Stokes of Arsenal in 2004 (Image: Dustin Shum/South China Morning Post via Getty Images) 2007: Made senior Ireland debut against San Marino. Turned down advances from Celtic and Charlton, bagged a £2m move to Sunderland, who are seeking promotion to the Premier League under Roy Keane. They won the Championship but Stokes is one of three players left behind by the Corkman for the squad's trip to Barnsley as they turned up late. Keane banned Stokes from socialising at 'The Glass Spider' in the city - with the nightclub later banning him too. 2008: Loaned to Sheffield United, makes 12 appearances but fails to score. 2009: Loaned to Crystal Palace, scores on his first start but doesn't score again. Returned to Scotland, joins Hibs for £500,000 and scores 22 goals, including the fastest goal in SPL history - after just 12.4 seconds against Rangers - and won the goal of the season award for another goal against Rangers. Giovanni Trapattoni says that won't rule him out of further involvement. 2012: Failed to make Ireland squad for Euro 2012 finals. 2013: Scored 50th goal for Celtic and is recalled at international level by Noel King to earn four caps in the October-November window. Handed a two-year suspended sentence for head-butting a man in the VIP lounge of a Dublin nightclub - pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm to Elvis impersonator Anthony Bradley at Buck Whaleys on Leeson Street. A jury decided that Stokes pay damages of €230,000 to Bradley cover his medical costs. 2014: Ninth and final Ireland appearance came against the USA. 2015: Told by Celtic boss Ronnie Delia he is not part of his long-term plans for the team. Joined Blackburn Rovers on a three-year deal, leaving Celtic after winning four SPL titles, two Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup. 2017: Joined Hibs for the third time, this time on a two-year deal, and scores 11 goals in 21 games before he was dropped for disciplinary reasons. 2018: Released by Hibs, has spells with Apollon Smyrni (Greece), Tractor (Iran) and Persepolis (Iran). 2019: Carried out a terrifying stalking campaign against his ex-girlfriend Eilidh Scott. The former striker bombarded Scott with a string of abusive messages that saw him send 100 texts a day on WhatsApp and email. He labelled her a 'slut', a 'slag' and a 'whore' and turned up at her home in Shotts, Lanarkshire, late at night. Stokes was sentenced to five months behind bars after he breached court orders. 2020: His professional football career ends after a short spell in Turkey with Adana Demirspor and, back in Scotland, with Livingston just one month into a one-year deal. Ex-Republic of Ireland footballer Anthony Stokes has avoided jail on appeal for a cocaine seizure and a high speed car chase in Dublin. (Image: Collins Courts) 2022: Prosecution for headbutting a man in Dublin's Temple Bar was struck out due to the absence of a key witness. He was accused of assault causing harm to Fraser Spratt at Fitzgerald's pub on Aston Quay, in Dublin 2, on March 16, 2019, which he denied. 2024: Slapped with a 15-month jail sentence after Gardai seized €3,700 worth of cocaine and he was involved in a high-speed car chase while also over the legal alcohol limit. On appeal, he was handed a suspended sentence and a community service order, but is currently serving a five-year driving ban. August 2025: Joined Conor McGregor's Black Forge FC. The 37-year-old made the announcement on Instagram, saying, 'Better get the dust knocked off the boots'. Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email .

Celtic tie Irish striker Johnny Kenny to deal until 2029

Sligo native Johnny Kenny has extended his contract at Celtic until 2029 following his breakthrough season under Brendan Rodgers. After moving from the League of Ireland in 2022, the striker was loaned to Queen's Park and Shamrock Rovers twice, in the second of which he scored seven goals in their march to the Conference League knockout stages. Since returning to Parkhead in January, Rodgers has involved Kenny in 10 games. He marked his first start with a goal against Aberdeen. He began this season as back-up to fellow Irishman Adam Idah, feeling the best place to continue his development is at the Scottish Premiership champions. 'All I wanted to do was commit my future to this club, and I'm delighted it's done now,' said the 22-year-old. 'I feel really proud. I spoke to the manager at the start of the summer, and it was a case of tying it all together. 'I like to think that I can score goals, and the manager believes in me too, so that helps when I'm in and around the box, knowing that the manager backs me. "I want to achieve everything possible at this club. I want to play Champions League football, win every trophy available and score goals. That's my aim.' 'It's a proud moment and I must thank the club for giving me this opportunity. I just want to repay them on the pitch over the next few years. 'I can only say thank you to everyone, my family, friends and the supporters for the support they've given me. Let's hope for more years of success at this football club.' Rodgers added: 'I am really pleased that we have agreed this new contract with Johnny. He is a young player who I believe can have a big future with Celtic. 'He loves the club and is really hungry and focused on doing well for us, developing further and making an important contribution to the squad, so we look forward to working with him moving forward.'
