LG Uplus unveils new lineup of foreigner-specific mobile plans

LG Uplus has rolled out a set of limited-time promotional mobile plans designed exclusively for foreign residents, offering generous international calling, data, and roaming perks tailored to their everyday needs.
The new lineup, unveiled on Wednesday, includes seven monthly plans ranging from 37,000 won to 85,000 won (approximately $27 to $62). All plans come with free international calling of up to 90 minutes per month, as well as enhanced roaming benefits when subscribers travel abroad.
Customers who activate LG Uplus's Roaming Pass add-on will receive double the usual data allowance while overseas, according to the company.
Those under the age of 34 who sign up for the new plans will receive bonus data ranging from 4GB to 60GB per month, depending on their chosen package, as the company targets younger users, many of whom are in Korea for work or education.
This is the largest foreigner-specific mobile package release by a Korean telecom provider. The plans are being offered as a promotional product, and sign-up is only available through Dec. 29 this year. Sign-up is open to any foreign resident holding a valid Residence Card, either online or at physical LG Uplus stores.
LG Uplus has designated 67 stores nationwide in areas with high concentrations of foreign residents as specialized service locations. These branches offer mobile service documentation in 17 languages, including English, Vietnamese, Lao, Chinese and Russian. More than 170 multilingual consultants have also been deployed to assist with service sign-ups and customer support.

According to 2024 year-end data from South Korea's Ministry of Justice, the country is now home to roughly 2.1 million foreign residents, representing over 4 percent of the national population.
Among them, more than 2 million are long-term residents. Recognizing this growing demographic, LG Uplus said the new offering is part of its strategy to diversify and expand within a mature domestic telecom sector.
The company said the new plans were developed based on internal research that identified specific communication needs among foreign residents. These included a desire for easier, more affordable ways to stay in touch with family and friends abroad, as well as reliable data access both domestically and when traveling to their home countries.
Park Jun-su, who oversees foreign customer and device operations at LG Uplus, said, 'With Korea's telecom market reaching maturity, foreign residents represent an important source of future growth. We aim to offer services that create real value and deliver a differentiated experience for this community.'

2024 census data shows nearly one-fifth of S. Koreans are aged 65 or older South Korea's population showed almost no growth in 2024, as an increase in foreign residents was offset by a continued decline in the number of Korean nationals, according to government data released Tuesday. The data also highlighted the country's aging population, with nearly 1 in 5 South Koreans now aged 65 or older. In its annual census data, Statistics Korea reported that the total population reached 51.8 million as of Nov. 1, 2024. This was an increase of just 31,000 from the previous year, or 0.1 percent. The population had previously declined for two straight years in 2021 and 2022, before rebounding in 2023. However, the growth in 2024 slowed from the previous year's 0.2 percent. The slowdown came as the number of Korean nationals fell by 77,000, or 0.2 percent, while the foreign population increased by 108,000, or 5.6 percent. The Korean national population has now decreased for four consecutive years since 2021. Out of the total population, 49.76 million were Korean nationals, making up 96.1 percent. Foreigners accounted for 2.04 million, or 3.9 percent, marking the first time the number of foreign residents surpassed 2 million. The foreign population had declined in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but began rising again in 2022. The recent increase is partly the result of an expanded employment permit system and efforts to attract international students. Among foreign residents, Korean-Chinese made up the largest group at 538,000, or 26.3 percent. Vietnamese residents saw the largest increase from the previous year, rising by 38,000, followed by Myanmar with 12,000 and Nepal with 10,000. When looking into the data by age groups, the overall working-age population, defined as those aged 15 to 64, fell by 283,000 to 36.26 million. The number of children aged 0 to 14 also dropped by 199,000 to 5.42 million. In contrast, the population aged 65 and older rose by 513,000 to 10.12 million, passing the 10 million mark for the first time. This resulted in proportion of seniors to increase, rising from 18.6 percent to 19.5 percent.

Hanwha, Samsung move to fill coverage gap as corporate breaches fuel demand A string of high-profile cyber incidents — from SK Telecom's data breach to a ransomware attack on Seoul Guarantee Insurance — has raised alarm over digital vulnerabilities and spurred Korean insurers to ramp up cyber coverage. Leading the response is Hanwha General Insurance, which in November launched its Cyber Risk Management Center, the first dedicated cyber risk division established by a Korean insurer. As part of its strategy, Hanwha formed a three-way partnership with global cybersecurity firm Theori and leading Korean law firm Shin & Kim, which operates a team specializing in digital and IT-related legal issues. Samsung Fire & Marine has also stepped up, establishing a cyber risk team last year and launching a policy in May tailored to small- and mid-sized firms — those with under 100 billion won ($72 million) in revenue and fewer than 3 million data subjects. Still nascent market Despite rising threats, Korea's cyber insurance market remains underdeveloped. A 2024 report by Munich Re estimated Korean cyber premiums at just $50 million, only 0.3 percent of the global total and placing it among the smallest in Asia. Domestically, cyber insurance accounts for just 1 percent of Korea's non-health accident insurance market. Awareness is also low. A 2024 Korea Internet & Security Agency survey showed only 14.5 percent of companies were aware of cyber insurance, while just 2.7 percent had purchased a policy. Yet threats are mounting. Reported incidents in Korea more than doubled from 630 in 2020 to 1,277 in 2023, then rose another 48 percent to 1,887 in 2024. In just the first half of 2025, major breaches hit SK Telecom, GS Retail, Olive Young, SGI and Yes24, exposing gaps in corporate defenses across sectors. In Korea, many companies still downplay cyber risks, viewing insurance as a supplementary response measure rather than an essential preventive safeguard. A KISA survey reflected worsening awareness. In 2024, only half of 6,500 companies had a data security budget, down from 68 percent in 2022. Of those, just 0.6 percent spent over 100 million won, while 75 percent spent less than 5 million. The only mandatory policy is liability insurance for data breaches, required of firms with over 1 billion won in revenue and more than 10,000 data subjects. As of last year, only 10 percent of eligible firms — about 7,800 — were enrolled. Even among the insured, coverage is often inadequate. SK Telecom, whose USIM breach affected 23 million subscribers, was covered for just 3 billion won, including the 1 billion won legal minimum. With USIM replacement alone estimated at 170 billion won, most of the burden remains uninsured. Regulators are starting to take notice. At a parliamentary hearing on the SKT breach, Rebuilding Korea Party lawmaker Lee Hai-min said, 'The 1 billion won coverage under personal data compensation insurance falls far too short to meaningfully compensate consumers in large-scale hacking cases,' calling for higher limits and stronger mandates to drive preventive investment. 'Cyber risks are mostly intangible and hard to quantify, and firms tend to avoid costs tied to abstract risks. On the other end, insurers face challenges in underwriting due to their interconnectedness and large-scale losses," stated Kwon Soon-il of the Korea Insurance Research Institute, urging policy incentives such as tax benefits and premium subsidies, along with clearer terms and broader coverage for broader adoption. The insurance industry is seeing growing demand. 'Until now, most firms subscribed only to basic liability policies, but the SK Telecom and SGI breaches have prompted many to reassess their coverage,' said an industry official. Newer comprehensive policies are particularly gaining attention for their flexibility. They allow companies to tailor plans, such as adding emergency response coverage or avoiding overlaps with existing policies, the official added. At Hanwha General, cyber insurance revenue doubled from November to May. Meanwhile, Munich Re expects the global cyber insurance market to grow 37 percent to $21 billion by 2027. In Korea, it's projected to rise 80 percent to $90 million — still modest, but showing clear momentum.

Growth prospects tied to tariff outcome as Seoul fights to avoid blow to exports, investor confidence With just days remaining before the US imposes steep "reciprocal tariffs," South Korea is ramping up efforts to strike a deal, overhauling its negotiation package and closely shadowing key US officials in the hopes of bringing the rate below 25 percent. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol departed for Washington on Tuesday, where he is scheduled to meet US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday. Koo said he will press for a 'mutually beneficial agreement,' pitching sectors such as shipbuilding as a cornerstone of bilateral cooperation. 'We'll explain our programs and explore long-term collaboration, especially in areas like shipbuilding,' Koo told reporters before departure. Top economic officials have fanned out across the US and even followed American negotiators to Scotland in hopes of reaching a deal before US President Donald Trump's tariff-pause deadline set for Friday. Seoul's 'Make American Shipbuilding Great Again' proposal, reportedly a multibillion-dollar investment plan aimed at revitalizing the US shipbuilding sector, has emerged as a potential breakthrough. Industry Minister Kim Jeong-kwan and Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo expanded their outreach beyond Washington, flying to Scotland on Sunday to continue talks with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who was accompanying Trump abroad. They held two consecutive days of negotiations with Lutnick on Thursday and Friday last week. The first round took place at the Commerce Department headquarters in Washington, followed by a second meeting at Lutnick's residence in New York. Lutnick confirmed their meeting in Turnberry in a Fox News interview and said that additional deals might be completed before Friday's deadline. Kim and Yeo appear to have headed directly back to Washington, continuing their pursuit of a deal. National Security Office chief Wi Sung-lac and Trade Minister Yeo have been in the US since July 20, engaging in both formal and informal negotiations. Talks initially stalled after a lukewarm response to Korea's first proposal to the US, particularly on non-tariff barriers concerning agricultural imports. In response, Seoul revised its offer, pledging more than $100 billion in US-bound investments and signaling a more flexible position on agriculture. Asia's fourth-largest economy is under growing pressure to reach a deal as the US finalizes agreements with other major trading partners. A US-EU pact announced Sunday capped tariffs at 15 percent, following a similar deal with Japan that included $550 billion in investments and increased US agricultural imports. Both Tokyo and Brussels secured 15 percent tariffs on key Korean export items such as automobiles and semiconductors, placing Seoul at a disadvantage if it fails to achieve comparable terms. Failure to secure a deal would deliver a sharp blow to Korea's export-driven economy. The country's gross domestic product grew 0.6 percent in the second quarter, rebounding from a contraction in the first, helped by a pickup in consumer spending and exports. But economists warn that steep US tariffs could reverse those gains, putting pressure on growth in the second half. Automobiles, its top export to the US, would face a 25 percent tariff while Japan enjoys a 15 percent rate, undermining the competitiveness of Hyundai and Kia and triggering potential ripple effects across auto parts, shipping and employment. Adding to the pressure, the Trump administration is expected to unveil semiconductor tariffs as early as next month, fueling concern across the chip supply chain, from raw materials and equipment to tech giants. The outcome could lead to tariffs ranging from 25 to 50 percent, similar to those previously imposed on steel, aluminum and autos. In a worst-case scenario, Korean firms such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, whose high-end memory chips are produced domestically and exported to the US, often via Taiwan, could be severely impacted. The fallout could extend to financial markets. 'If the steep tariffs go into effect, the Korean currency could tumble and Korean equities may face a correction,' said Park Sang-hyun, an economist at iM Securities. Citi economist Kim Wook-jin said he still expected a US-Korea trade agreement before the deadline this Friday, citing the precedent set by the US-Japan deal. 'There is a low likelihood that the US will lock in a 25 percent tariff and risk triggering a major economic shock to South Korea. Given the current political climate, the new (Korean) government is unlikely to take an overly aggressive stance on tariffs, and Washington is also seen as motivated to reach a deal,' he said. He estimates a potential 14 percent effective US tariff rate on Korean goods, assuming 15 percent duties on autos and reciprocal items, with no further hikes on steel, semiconductors or pharmaceuticals. A successful agreement could lift sentiment and support a rebound. 'If tariffs are lowered, exports could bottom in the third quarter and begin a gradual recovery in the fourth,' said Jeong Yeo-kyung of IBK Securities. Lee Jung-hoon of Eugene Investment & Securities added that with stronger domestic demand in the second half, Korea could see 1 percent growth this year and return to the 2 percent range in 2025.
