India's fake weddings
Imagine an event with all the fun of a wedding but none of the commitment, stress or family drama: you've just imagined the latest entry onto the Indian party scene.
At a "fake wedding", people gather "to enjoy a wedding party minus the actual marriage', said the BBC, and the trend is spreading beyond India's shores.
'There for the energy'
There are "dazzling lights, glittering outfits, Bollywood hits, a lavish spread of food and an atmosphere soaked in celebration". It all feels "extravagant, emotional and larger than life" but there's no bride and groom, "just the party".
These "judgement-free" ceremonies offer the wedding experience "without drama", said Curly Tales. You can have the enjoyment of a Desi wedding "without the emotional baggage" or "financial headache". There's "no awkward gift-giving, no planning leave from work for a multi-day affair" and "fake smiles" aren't required for "distant relatives" you hardly know.
Fake weddings chime with young people's desire to find reasons to celebrate. And the trend's "low-commitment nature" works well for the younger generation because "you're not attending out of obligation"; you're there "because you want to be – for the music, for the energy, and for the people".
Dubai dance-offs
The trend is already evolving. At some fake weddings, the organisers divide attendees into "groom's team" or "bride's team"; at others, there's "no alcohol, just a themed celebration", said the BBC. Fake Indian weddings are also "taking over Dubai", said Curly Tales, where ticketed parties are "decked out with dhols, DJs, dance-offs and full-blown wedding decor".In India's big cities – Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru – ticket prices for fake weddings start at around 1,500 rupees (£13) but they can be as high as 15,000 rupees or more. This is great news for India's $130 billion (£97 billion) wedding industry. Most "proper" weddings take place during the cooler months, typically between November and March, and venues are often empty between June and August. Fake weddings can step in to fill that gap.
It's already clear there's real appeal in faking it. And why not, said Curly Tales, when you can swerve the "social minefield" of relatives asking "questions about your career, relationships or why you're not next in line"? The "only thing expected of you" is to "show up, dress well and have fun".

Universal Pictures is continuing its crackdown on generative AI with new messaging, threatening legal action against anyone who uses its movies to train AI systems, at the end of all its new movies. The legal warning says Universal's movies "may not be used to train AI" and appears during the end credits of its releases. "This motion picture is protected under the laws of the United States and other countries," the warning reads. "Unauthorized duplication, distribution or exhibition may result in civil liability and criminal prosecution." Per The Hollywood Reporter, Universal thinks that "the worldwide insertion of the language adds another layer of protection against the theft of its movies for data mining and AI training purposes." The messaging has appeared at the end of Universal's biggest releases of the summer: How to Train Your Dragon, Jurassic World Rebirth, and The Bad Guys 2. Universal recently teamed up with Disney to sue AI company Midjourney, and the two studios called AI a "bottomless pit of plagiarism". An NBCUniversal spokesperson said that the company was suing the company to "protect the hard work of all the artists whose work entertains and inspires us and the significant investment we make in our content." Just last month, Amazon backed a new AI service, Showrunner, that uses material from existing TV shows to allow users to create their own episodes. The CEO of Fable, the company behind the software, said that "Hollywood streaming services are about to become two-way entertainment." Perry was part of Blue Origin's all-female spaceflight on April 14. Mariah Carey fans are loving a video of her learning about Katy Perry's trip to space — almost four months after the fact. The singer was asked in an interview if she would like to go to space as Perry did, but Carey expressed some disbelief: "Did she go to space?" Scott Mills, the host of The Scott Mills Breakfast Show on BBC's Radio 2 assured the powerhouse vocalist that, yes, Perry had. "Where'd she go?" Carey asked again. Mills looked at her quizzically. "Space?" he offered. The "Last Friday Night" singer joined CBS journalist Gayle King, and four others for an all-female commercial spaceflight on April 14 through space-tech company Blue Origin, which is owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The journey took a little more than 10 minutes. Carey couldn't get over it. "Into orbit and back? She's, like, floating?" Carey asked. "And this is true?" The host assured the star that it was factual. "Wow," Carey said. "All right, Katy." She added, "I'm not mad at her. That's pretty amazing." Mills appeared to tease Carey when he said, "Well, I mean, she hasn't stopped talking about it since, but it happened." Mills then got back to his original question: Would Carey go to space?" "I think I've done enough," Carey replied, much to the internet's show's share of the video was full of comments including "iconic" and brilliant." "I love that Mariah just lives in her own bubble!" another person wrote. "What a queen." The prolific singer is known for her very Mariah comments. In October, for instance, when the superstar was told that she should have more Grammys — she's won five, but has been nominated 34 times — she agreed. "They scaaaaammed me," she said on the Las Culturistas podcast. "They toy with me." Most famously, Carey insisted in an early 2000s interview that she wasn't aware of her fellow singer Jennifer Lopez, which led to rumors of a feud that have since been debunked. New Pocketpair-published horror game turns Balatro's live-action Jimbo actor into a jester again, devs insist it's "accidental," really: "No one will believe that we genuinely didn't mean to do this"

Final Fantasy 16 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 actor Ben Starr has lent his talents to horror game Dead Take, and although one moment in it appears to be a direct nod to his other iconic role as Balatro's live-action Jimbo, the devs insist the apparent reference was "genuinely accidental." Dead Take – the latest game from Tales of Kenzera: ZAU studio Surgent Studios, and the first game to be published by the Palworld devs' publishing arm, Pocketpair Publishing – launched at the end of last month, and it didn't take long for players to spot the moment in question. The coincidence was highlighted in a video from streamer and content creator TadpoledRin, who shares a clip of them cautiously turning the handle of a jack-in-a-box, only to be jumpscared by a jester popping out of it, with a picture of Starr (or rather, his live-action character of Vinny Monroe) pinned to its face. "Balatro!" TadpoledRin declares, after recovering from the scare. Responding to this, the official Surgent Studios Twitter account says that "no one will believe that we genuinely didn't mean to do this," before digging up evidence from "the moment we realized" in late July. A series of messages from the studio's Slack chat shows one dev sharing a screenshot of the in-game jester alongside an image of Starr at this year's BAFTA Games Awards, dressed in full Jimbo attire. "This is the most incredible happy accident that just dawned on us," they wrote at the time, with their fellow devs responding "HOW HAVE WE NOT REALIZED THIS" and "if I had known I would have matched the colors and outfit." Back to the present day, and Dead Take creative director and founder of Surgent Studios Abubakar Salim reiterates that the whole thing was "genuinely accidental," which honestly makes the whole thing even funnier. What is it with games picturing Starr as a jester, all of a sudden? He really does rock the look, though, and to quote him from his aforementioned appearance at the BAFTA Game Awards: "This might be a rather confusing, and at first glance, suspiciously arousing moment. But don't worry, it's perfectly natural. Don't fight the feeling, Jokers have full sex now." I thought the scariest thing about Dead Take would be its Final Fantasy and Baldur's Gate 3 stars doing American accents, but no horror game has stunned me like this since 2022.
