Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma calls for collective efforts to realize vision of Viksit Bharat at NITI Aayog meet
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assam government with an active support of the Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken comprehensive steps to transform the vision of Viksit Assam.
ADVERTISEMENT Speaking at the 10th Governing Council meeting of the NITI Aayog on 'Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat @ 2047' in New Delhi , Sarma said, 'The pursuit of a Viksit Assam has long been a cherished aspiration of our people. The Prime Minister's vision of a Viksit Bharat presents us with an opportunity to transform that aspiration into reality and reclaim and rejuvenate the rich legacy of a prosperous Assam'.
The Chief Minister said that guided by the vision of the Prime Minister, Government of Assam has embarked on a transformative journey, nurturing the ambitious goal of making India the second largest economy. From exports and innovation to digital infrastructure, from railways to rocket launches, India is scripting a new chapter of progress. He, therefore, called for collective efforts incorporating the strength, innovation and inclusive progress of each state to fulfil the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Sarma said that before independence, Assam was a land of prosperity, with a per capita income higher than the national average. The state's premium tea exports had already gained global recognition. Assam enjoyed robust connectivity with the global economy—railway lines connected Dibrugarh to Chittagong by 1904, and the Brahmaputra served as a vital waterway linking Assam to ports like Chittagong. The state was firmly positioned as a hub of international trade.However, the partition of India in 1947 severed these arteries overnight. Assam was left with only a narrow and vulnerable lifeline—the Siliguri Chicken Neck—connecting it to the rest of India. The Chittagong Hill Tracts, despite a population that was over 97 per cent non-Muslim, were awarded to East Pakistan. On August 15, 1947, Chakma leaders hoisted the Indian flag in Rangamati, hoping to join India. However, the allocation of Chittagong to East Pakistan dashed those hopes. Despite their appeals, Pandit Nehru declined to intervene. His tacit acceptance of this decision dealt a significant and lasting blow to the Northeast's access to global trade.Again, in 1971, during the creation of Bangladesh, Smt. Indira Gandhi had a historic opportunity to negotiate a broader and more secure geographical corridor to the Northeast. Despite her decisive leadership in securing Bangladesh's liberation, this moment too passed without seizing that strategic opportunity. These were pivotal junctures where bold leadership could have altered the trajectory of Assam and the Northeast. Instead, the region was let down by the political leadership of the time.
ADVERTISEMENT Today, under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister, Assam and other North Eastern states are no longer considered the prisoners of history. Assam is reclaiming its rightful role as a gateway to Southeast Asia reviving inland waterways, restoring connectivity and building infrastructure that will reposition Assam as a dynamic economic frontier of Viksit Bharat.
To truly unlock the region's promise, the Chief Minister said, 'We must implement dedicated transport and logistics corridors, revival of inland waterways and critical railway infrastructure, freight subsidies and long-haul incentives for industries, affordable and reliable power with appropriate cost equalisation mechanisms'.
ADVERTISEMENT He further said that Assam and the Northeast are not peripheral—they are strategic, economic, and cultural frontiers. They are the gateways to Southeast Asia, rich in human capital and opportunity. He, therefore, said, 'Let us correct the failures of past political vision with bold policy clarity today. Let us match the Prime Minister's commitment with institutional responsiveness, and replace inertia with action'.Sarma said that State government has taken decisive steps to build a prosperous, empowered and self-reliant Assam. He further said that the state currently boast of a robust Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of USD 68.7 billion, with a remarkable 19 per cent growth recorded in the last fiscal year and an impressive 17.8 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the past three years.
ADVERTISEMENT The Chief Minister said, 'We have identified several key sectors like tourism, textiles, pharmaceuticals, electronics, hydrocarbons, agriculture and infrastructure. We are also investing in future-oriented domains like new-age skills, green jobs and the circular economy'.
Dr. Sarma on the occasion sought sustained guidance of the Prime Minister and cooperation of the Council to bring the vision of a Viksit Assam to life setting new benchmarks of progress and prosperity in the state.

Sebi issues attachment order against Mehul Choksi for non-payment of penalties
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on Friday issued a recovery attachment order against absconding diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, who is a co-accused in the Rs 13,850-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, which is one of the biggest banking scams in India's recovery officer has been assigned the task of taking action on the attachment order, issued on June 4 by the financial agency's Mumbai action against the fugitive diamond merchant had been initiated due to the non-payment of a Rs 1.5 crore penalty imposed by Sebi on January 31, 2022. An LoU is a bank guarantee which allows customers to get short-term credit from overseas 2011 to 2018, Choksi, Modi and their companies used these LoUs without following the normal procedures. Some bank officials were involved and allowed the LoUs to be issued without entering them into the bank's main system. This helped the fraud go unnoticed for funds, which were shown as being used for importing goods, were mostly never returned. Instead, new LoUs were taken to repay the earlier ones, and the money was used for business and personal total value of the fraud reached around Rs 13,850 crore. 'Legal Process Is Underway': Mark Carney On Nijjar Case Probe After Inviting PM Modi To G7

Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney refused to comment on the ongoing probe in the killing of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, saying that a legal process is underway. He further asserted that Canada follows rule of law and no one would interfere in the ongoing investigations. Carney' predecessor Justin Trudeau had openly accused New Delhi of plotting the murder of Nijjar. Carney's remarks came after he invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As this year's chair of the G7, Carney said it's important to have India at the table in Kananaskis while world leaders discuss issues including energy security and critical minerals, given the country's size and key role in the global supply chain. PM Modi said that he had a 'warm" conversation with newly elected Canadian PM. He congratulated him and confirmed his participation in the upcoming G7 Summit. Mark Carney, a former central banker and climate finance advocate, became Canada's Prime Minister after leading the Liberal Party to victory in the recent general election. Indo-Canadian Souring Ties Indo-Canadian ties have nosedived in the aftermath of Nijjar's killing as well as Trudeau's allegations. In September 2023, Trudeau had accused New Delhi of having a 'potential" involvement of Indian agents in Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing. India has repeatedly denied these allegations, and has taken a decisive stand against what it perceives as Canada's non-seriousness in dealing with the Khalistan issue. The ties further strained when Trudeau named Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma as a person of interest in an investigation, without naming the case. A person of interest means a suspect who is not arrested. Earlier this year, a public inquiry on foreign interference in Canada has found 'no definitive link to a foreign state" in the killing of Nijjar. What Is Hardeep Singh Nijjar Case? Nijjar was killed on June 18, 2023, outside a gurdwara in British Columbia. According to the probe report, Canada's security and intelligence agencies initially assessed this to be a gang or criminal activity, and Trudeau was informed of this. But, as more intelligence was gathered over the summer, India's involvement was revealed and the then Prime Minister was promptly briefed on the updated assessment, the report stated. 'The government wanted India to acknowledge its involvement in the killing but also needed a pragmatic approach to resolve the issue. The then Prime Minister testified that the immediate approach was to engage with India and communicate the need for the two countries to work together while ensuring there was accountability," it said. In August and September 2023, there were a series of meetings between the National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister (NSIA), the CSIS Director, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and their Indian counterparts. BJP leaders maximise public outreach with personal touch
Ludhiana: With only a few days left for the West bypoll, senior leaders of the BJP have urged local leaders to make maximum public appearances. Those who were not coming forward for the campaign are now visible in the city. BJP leaders, who prefer door-to-door campaigns, are visiting different areas one by one.
