Wednesday's briefing: Alexander Isak goes public and Rangers suffer big setback
On the pitch, Rangers' hopes of reaching the Champions League took a major hit.
Isak made clear his determination to leave Newcastle this summer as he issued a statement on Instagram that concluded: 'When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue.'
But Newcastle quickly responded with a statement saying no commitment was ever made by a club official that the Sweden striker could leave this summer and that they 'have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired'.
However, the club left the door open for Isak to 'be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates'.
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah collected his record third PFA men's player of the year award, with Arsenal's Mariona Caldentey collecting the women's accolade at a ceremony in Manchester on Tuesday.
The 33-year-old Egypt international scored 29 goals and provided 18 assists as Arne Slot's Reds stormed to last season's Premier League title.
'I look at myself now, a guy coming from Egypt and making it to the top level, making history today, it's something that makes me so proud,' Salah said.
The women's award went to Caldentey, who joined Arsenal from Barcelona last summer and scored 19 goals in all competitions, helping the Gunners lift the Champions League.
'Everyone at the club has made it so easy for me and they helped me from the start and it just feels like home and I'm happy to be here,' she said.
Rangers suffered a nightmare start to the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Club Brugge.
Gers defender Nasser Djiga inexplicably allowed a long ball past him in the third minute and grateful visiting striker Romeo Vermant coolly lofted over stranded goalkeeper Jack Butland, before further strikes from Jorne Spileers and Brandon Mechele had the visitors 3-0 up after just 20 minutes.
Brazilian striker Danilo pulled a goal back four minutes after the break but the Belgian side will have a two-goal cushion for next week's return leg.
Gers boss Russell Martin insisted: 'The tie is still open and the players feel that.'
England forward Michelle Agyemang has returned to Brighton for a second season-long loan spell from Arsenal, having scored five goals in 22 games for the club last term.
The 19-year-old scored two vital equalisers in the knock-out rounds at Euro 2025 to propel the Lionesses into the Basel final, where they successfully defended their title in a penalty shootout victory over Spain.
Agyemang was named young player of the tournament after her breakthrough campaign, and has been nominated for the women's Kopa trophy at this year's Ballon d'Or awards.
Celtic are up against Kazakh side Kairat in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying play-off in Glasgow.
Oliver Glasner will hold a preview press conference for a game Crystal Palace hoped they would not be playing – their Conference League play-off first leg against Fredrikstad – and will be sure to face questions on the future of Eberechi Eze.

The major hurdle in the way of Tottenham as they pursue Villa star after Eze debacle
Tottenham Hotspur have made Aston Villa 's Morgan Rogers a priority transfer target after missing out on Eberechi Eze. Aston Villa are reluctant to sell Rogers, who recently won PFA Young Player of the Year, but financial fair play constraints might make them consider a substantial offer. Rogers is expected to command a high transfer fee, potentially exceeding £80m, given his contract runs until 2030. Spurs are under increasing pressure to secure attacking players following James Maddison's injury and previous missed targets like Morgan Gibbs-White and Eze. The club is also pursuing other attacking options, including Monaco's Maghnes Akliouche and Southampton's Tyler Dibling, with Nico Paz of Como considered a more achievable transfer.

Arsenal edging closer to completing £60million move for Eberechi Eze
Eberechi Eze's £60million transfer from Crystal Palace to Arsenal could be confirmed as early as this weekend, the PA news agency understands. Eze is set to become Arsenal's seventh signing of the summer after they moved to hijack Tottenham's bid for the England international. It is believed the finishing touches on a deal to sign the 27-year-old, which catapults Arsenal's spending to beyond £250m, are all but completed. Eze's stunning move to the Emirates accelerated this week following a knee injury sustained by Kai Havertz. The Germany international came on as a second-half substitute in Arsenal's 1-0 win at Manchester United, and completed the game, but he did not participate in the club's open training session at the Emirates on Wednesday. It is unclear how long Havertz, who is still being assessed, will face on the sidelines. But the hastiness to swoop for Eze is evidence Arsenal did not want to take any chances as Mikel Arteta – backed by sporting director Andrea Berta – bids to lead the north Londoners to their first Premier League title in 22 years. Eze is now poised to follow striker Viktor Gyokeres (£55m), defender Cristhian Mosquera (£13m), midfielder Martin Zubimendi (£60m), goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5m), midfielder Christian Norgaard (£10m) and forward Noni Madueke (£48.5m) in making the switch to the Emirates. Arteta will face the media at the club's training ground on Friday to preview his side's second match of the campaign, at home to Leeds on Saturday evening.

Celtic's 'big man will be fine' as dressing room left unequivocal over excuses
Celtic skipper Callum McGregor has urged the fans to stick with the team after a difficult night in the Champions League. Sign up to our Football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Callum McGregor says the Celtic players will only have themselves to blame if they don't qualify for the Champions League this season - but insists they'll have a better chance of doing so if everybody sticks together. A sub-standard performance from Brendan Rodgers' side saw them struggle to break down a stubborn Kairat Almaty in the Champions League play-off round first leg on Wednesday, where the visitors battled hard in order to take a 0-0 draw back to Kazakhstan ahead of next week's crucial second leg. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'First-half, we were too slow,' admitted McGregor. 'We were stuck on the side a bit, nothing really connecting. The whole second-half we were pretty much in total control of the game, just trying to find that moment of quality to open up the game for us. If we'd have done that, we'd have got two and maybe another one. We have to find the moment, and now we have to go away; it is a shootout tie. It probably makes it a bit easier, the fact that the mindset is you have to go there and win the game, or else you're out. That's the simple message.' Celtic players applaud the fans following their disappointing 0-0 draw with Kairat Almaty in the Champions League playoff first leg tie at Celtic Park. | SNS Group Next week's clash in Almaty will see Celtic embark on one of the longest journeys in the competition, with a 10-hour flight anticipated in order to reach the 23,804 capacity Central Stadium in Almaty, but McGregor insists the team have not use tiredness as an excuse. 'Everyone in there needs to be positive [next week], or else it won't happen,' said McGregor. 'It's Champions League football, you have two legs to win the game. If we win 1-0 tonight, I think everybody is buzzing, so we have to keep a lid on that. We have to go there and try and open the game, and ultimately get the win. You have to block out the noise and perform. If we perform, then we'll win. 'It's difficult [the travel to Almaty]. There'll be things put in place, and people trying to help us. But ultimately we have to be ready we have to be ready when we go on the pitch. There's no excuse. If we don't win the game, then that is on us. We don't need or want excuses. We are a team that wants to be in the Champions League. We didn't perform tonight as well as we could have in the first-half. Second-half was a lot better, but we want to be in the Champions League - if we want it, we have to go and do it.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad McGregor also addressed the decision to substitute misfiring striker Adam Idah at half-time. The Republic of Ireland international has bagged 24 goals for Celtic since arriving at the club 18 months ago, but is yet to open his account in the new season, and has appeared a little short on confidence in the opening weeks of the campaign. 'Everybody looks at strikers and they think they need a goal,' said the skipper. 'The big man's started well, worked hard for the team, but tonight just wasn't his night, so the manager went for something a bit different, maybe more pace through the middle of the pitch. The big man will be fine. He'll come back in and train, and we'll get him on the pitch at the weekend, and hopefully he gets that goal. Celtic striker Adam Idah has had a difficult start to the new campaign. | SNS Group 'But it is not just on Adam. The team need to function properly, get him the right chances to get that goal. It is a team thing, so it is never one individual. We have to be connected, give him the chances, then it is up to him to finish them. But we didn't do that first-half. We have to stick together, that's the strength of this club. Even in the bad moments, we have to stick together.
