The Amazon Appstore is being killed off on Android
Credit: Amazon
Millions of people using the Amazon Appstore will be cut off in mid-August.
The closure affects anyone using the app on Android phones.
Amazon's Appstore is a rival to the default Google Play Store, letting you download apps and games. It launched on Android all the way back in March 2011.
But on August 20, the Amazon Appstore will close – and any apps downloaded from it will no longer receive updates.
That means support will end for all apps you've downloaded via the Amazon Appstore.
They may become buggy or stop work entirely, and won't be able to receive any important security fixes either.
In an FAQ, Amazon warned that these apps "will not be guaranteed to operate on Android devices".
Amazon has already begun killing the Appstore off by blocking developers from uploading new apps to it.
That change kicked in on February 20 this year.
ALL CHANGE
Amazon first revealed the closure earlier this year in a dry statement uploaded to its website.
Amazon Prime cancels TEN TV shows this year - including A-list actor's horror drama and beloved cult classic's reboot
"In our ongoing effort to streamline and improve our services and programs, we are making some changes to Amazon Appstore for Android devices and Amazon Coins program," Amazon explained.
"We will be discontinuing support of Amazon Appstore for Android devices on August 20, 2025. As of February 20, 2025, developers will no longer have the option to submit new apps targeting Android devices.
"However, developers will have the option to submit updates to their existing live apps on Amazon Appstore for Android devices until August 20, 2025."
Amazon added: "All existing apps on Amazon Appstore for Android devices will continue to be available to customers until August 20, 2025. Developers can continue to submit app updates until August 20, 2025."

The change only affects Android phones – and not Fire TV devices

It's worth noting that the Amazon Appstore is only shutting down on Android phones.
The Amazon Appstore was never available on iOS for iPhone, so it can't disappear because it was never there.
And the Amazon Appstore will still be available on Amazon's own Fire TVs and Fire Tablets.
ACTION STATIONS
One important step you'll want to take is reviewing your Amazon Appstore subscriptions.
HOW TO CHECK YOUR AMAZON APPSTORE SUBSCRIPTIONS
Here's the official advice from Amazon...

2. Tap My Apps

Make sure to cancel them before the Appstore shuts down on your Android phone.
Just go into the Amazon Appstore app, then choose My Apps > Subscriptions and kill off any remaining memberships you have.
Amazon Coins are also being sunsetted.
These were a special currency used to make purchases on certain apps in the Amazon Appstore.
3
If you've got an Android phone, check your Amazon Appstore subscriptions sooner rather than later

You'll need to use any remaining Amazon Coins by August 20, 2025.
If you have any left over after that date, they'll be refunded.
Amazon hasn't said exactly how long this will take, but promised "additional details" at a later date.
You can see your Coins balance by logging into the Amazon Appstore and checking the homepage.

Amazon slashes 'reliable' robot vacuum that's 'worth every penny' by 22%

Shoppers are hailing this discounted robot vacuum a 'game changer'. Housework is boring, and many of us spend hours cleaning the house every week in an endless cycle of hoovering. But luckily, we live in an age where the latest technology can take on some of the most tedious tasks. And Amazon is currently offering a generous 22 per cent discount on the Vexilar Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum Cleaner with Mop, slashing its price tag from £289 to £225.24 This bit of tech promises to offer 'up to 60 days of hands-free cleaning' thanks to its spacious 2L dust bag providing uninterrupted cleaning cycles, which is perfect for busy households always on the go. The robot vacuum removes dust, debris and pet hair from a variety of surfaces, and has many customisable features, including suction power, water level, and cleaning frequency, reported Birmingham Live. The gadget connects to an app and is compatible with Alexa, Google Home and Siri. It maps every corner of the home, ensuring it navigates around furniture and any no-go zones that are set up. The robot vacuum offers up to 180 minutes of runtime in quiet mode. When its battery is low, the gadget automatically returns to its charging station and resumes cleaning once sufficiently recharged. People looking to browse the market for other robot vacuums may be interested in the Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum and Mop for £399.99. This gadget offers CleanEdge Detect technology, however it provides less runtime from a single charge at 110 minutes. And Hoover is offering a £50 discount on its 2-In-1 Robot Vacuum Cleaner and Mop, bringing the price down to £249. It can be used on carpets and hard floors, and can climb onto rugs up to 2cm tall. The Vexilar Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum Cleaner with Mop has received high praise from Amazon customers, earning an overall rating of 4.5 from over 1,000 buyers. Vexilar Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum Cleaner with Mop £289 £225.24 Amazon Shop Product Description One impressed shopper wrote: "This Robot Vacuum Cleaner is an absolute game-changer for keeping my home clean with minimal effort. The 2L self-emptying station is a lifesaver. It truly delivers on its promise of up to 60 days of hands-free cleaning, making it perfect for busy households like mine. No more constant emptying. "It quickly mapped my entire home with pinpoint accuracy, navigating around furniture and obstacles with ease. I love how it creates optimised cleaning paths for thorough coverage. It picks up dust, debris, and even stubborn pet hair from both carpets and hard floors. The adjustable suction levels and quiet operation are fantastic bonuses. "Setting no-go zones and scheduling specific cleaning times via the app is a breeze. The auto-recharge and resume function ensure it always completes the job without a hitch. "This vacuum cleaner has exceeded my expectations in every way, combining top-notch technology, strong performance, and ease of use. If you're looking for a reliable, high-quality robot vacuum, this is worth every penny." A second happy customer commented: "What a great robot vacuum at a great price. It comes out every night and cleans the whole house. The level of suction is great and the mopping feature is a great bonus. It has mapped the whole house accurately and never puts a foot wrong. The self emptying feature is absolutely brilliant and just another reason to buy this vacuum. It goes about its work quietly and efficiently." Unfortunately one Amazon shopper was left disappointed, as they explained: "Stopped working after one week. It would not leave the room and just hoovered the same bits over and over." On the other hand, another buyer was thrilled with the Vexilar Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum Cleaner with Mop, saying: "I saw this on offer and decided to go for it as the battery on my five-year-old robot vacuum was on the way out. "For roughly the same price I paid five years ago, I now have a self emptying, smarter vacuum that maps out the rooms and supports multi level. "I've also noticed it's able to access more areas and can climb over the kitchen bench legs. It hasn't gotten stuck yet after two weeks of use and I've not had to empty it once. Fantastic value for money, I'm glad I went with this rather than the more expensive brands costing double or triple." The robot vacuum can be purchased here. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! So if you're keen to spruce up your home this year but don't want to fork out a fortune, you've come to the right place, as this transformation is sure to give you inspiration. 2 2 Facebook user Charlotte Blades took to the popular DIY On A Budget Official page where she proved there's no need to spend thousands to give your living room a glow-up. The money-smart woman achieved the epic results thanks to bargains from major retailers, as well as using Facebook Marketplace to source some of the interior. Before the jaw-dropping transformation, the spacious living room boasted cream walls, an old fireplace, as well as a lone lampshade and no curtains for privacy. But after scoring several wallet-friendly bargains, Charlotte managed to give the room a brand new look - and people cannot believe the difference. One of the cheapest items in the epic makeover was the new fireplace which she had stumbled across on Facebook Marketplace for a mere £30. To give the fireplace a more rustic aesthetic, the savvy woman used a wooden pallet - which cost her nothing. The fresh linen curtains, which gave the room a castle-like feel, were also just £30 and found online on Amazon. During the makeover process, Charlotte also decided to ditch the plain walls and used a dark green-grey paint. Fellow DIY lovers can snap up the Woodpigeon paint for just £38 from the home goods store B&Q. Another new feature in the living room was the gorgeous white rug that Charlotte had found on eBay for £85 - and while that may seem expensive, the rug is of a great size and absolutely stunning. I transformed my council house hallway for under £60 - the old laminate has vanished but critics say it 'looks cheap' ''So happy with the results! It doesn't have to be expensive!'' said the Facebook user who also got brown sofas from Facebook Marketplace for the bargain price of £120. Warning to all Netflix and Disney+ users amid epidemic of leaked details

Login details for millions of streaming service accounts were leaked last year, according to a new report. Anyone with a Netflix, Disney Plus or Amazon Prime Video account may want to reset their passwords after a cyber security report revealed that millions of streaming accounts have been compromised. Login details for countless accounts were leaked last year, and the new data serves as a warning for users to stay vigilant with their passwords. Internet security company Kaspersky found over seven million accounts for the most popular streaming services had been compromised in 2024 alone. But interestingly, these details weren't leaked because of security breaches within Netflix, Disney Plus or Prime Video themselves. ‌ Spyware browser extensions, which scrape the information typed into a computer and send it away to scammers, and phishing- fake websites that trick users into entering account information- were to blame for the colossal numbers of login details leaked. ‌ The report showed that Netflix accounts made up the majority of the leaked information, representing five million of the seven million compromised accounts in total. But login details for Prime Video, Disney Plus, HBO Max, and Apple TV+ were also breached. Accounts from all over the world were found to be compromised, with people based in Brazil, then Mexico, then India counting the most leakages. But the UK was another area affected by the serious security breaches, reported Tech Radar. ‌ What are the dangers of my account details being leaked? While your financial information should usually be safely secured by most streaming services, that's not to say that all of your information is safe, and you should be particularly careful if you use the same password across different accounts. For example, if your Prime Video login is the same as your Amazon Prime login, this may make your financial details easily accessible to hackers, who will be able to order things online from your account. ‌ And the same goes for Apple TV. If your Apple TV password and your overall Apple ID password are the same, then a hacker may be able to spend money from the payment details connected to your Apple ID. ‌ How can I prevent my login details being stolen? While Netflix does not, Amazon and Apple both support two-factor authentication. This means that a hacker cannot access your account with the password alone. If you don't have this active, it's vital to change your account settings to enable two-factor authentication. ‌ You should also make sure to use a range of different passwords across your different accounts, so that if a hacker does get their hands on your information, they won't be able to access your financial information across different websites. Most iPhones and Android phones come equipped with a password manager, which you can use if you're worried about remembering all your different passwords. And as well as changing your passwords, it's crucial to stay vigilant online in general. Remember how the millions of login details were leaked in the first place- not through hacks of the services, but because people downloaded suspicious browser extensions and software, or were caught in phishing schemes that asked them to enter their details into fake websites. Always be careful about where you share your information, even if it's something as simple as your Netflix details. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
