Kaizer Chiefs set to land Portuguese striker: 23 goals in 29 games

The South African21 hours ago

Kaizer Chiefs are on the verge of pulling off a massive coup by securing the signature of Flavio Silva, a Portuguese striker with roots in Guinea-Bissau and a reputation for finding the net with precision.
Silva, who sharpened his skills in the famed Sporting CP youth academy, looks set to join the Soweto giants from Indonesian Premier League side Persebaya Surabaya.
Silva arrived in Southeast Asia with a bang in January 2023, when he scored five goals in a single match for Persik Kediri to seal a 5–2 win over Persikabo 1973. That performance set the tone for a prolific spell in Liga 1, where he netted 39 goals in 78 appearances.
Last season, the 29-year-old striker stood out as one of the most lethal finishers in the region. He scored 23 goals in 29 matches, underlining his consistency and killer instinct inside the box. In his debut season at Persik Kediri, he notched seven goals, and followed that up with nine strikes in 33 games for Persebaya.
Described as a traditional number 9, Silva dominates in the air and punishes defences with sharp finishes inside the penalty area. Standing at 1.85 metres, he offers Kaizer Chiefs a physical presence and a reliable goal threat.
A source revealed that while final contract terms are still in progress, Chiefs are confident of wrapping up the deal shortly.
Born in Bissau, on West Africa's coast, Silva brings more than just goals. He unleashes powerful shots with both feet and presses relentlessly from the front. His positional awareness and ability to force mistakes from defenders make him a nightmare for opposition backlines.
A former Benfica B player, Silva has represented Portugal at youth level. And boasts superior stats in ground duels, winning eight per match on average. A figure that outperforms some of the league's top defenders and attackers.
Will Flavio Silva be the main man at Kaizer Chiefs?

Cardoso's message to Sundowns haters after Club World Cup exit

'There will be a lot of people haters speaking bad about us but we grow from it when people speak bad about us,' said Cardoso. Miguel Cardoso, head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns instructs players during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup match against Fluminense at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida on 25 June 2025 © Lynne Gleeson/BackpagePix Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso was left with mixed emotions after his side bowed out of the FIFA Club World Cup on Wednesday night. Sundowns out but not down The Brazilians were eliminated from the tournament following a goalless draw against Brazil's Fluminense in their final Group A fixture at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. ALSO READ: Sundowns can hold their heads high despite Club World Cup exit Sundowns opened their campaign with a historic 1-0 victory over Ulsan HD, marking their first-ever win at a Club World Cup, before suffering a narrow defeat to Borussia Dortmund. The stalemate against Fluminense brought their campaign to a close, falling short of qualification for the knockout stages. Despite the disappointment, Cardoso expressed pride in his team's efforts throughout the competition. 'We made our club even more known in the world. We showed very good things from many years until now and now everybody in football will speak about Mamelodi Sundowns,' said Cardodso. 'No one wants to go to the stadium, go back home and after having watched football that was not exciting. Sundowns created good emotions for people that love football and that's why we have so many people connecting to the team. 'A very high level' 'I got messages from people that I was not even expecting to hear from and I don't even know how they got my number but people from international football throughout the world from Brazil, Spain and England and that means that Sundowns played at a very high level. 'So we are not happy because you had objectives but I'm very proud of the capacity that the players showed and we have to go back to our country with our heads held up because we are much stronger than when we came here.' Masandawana's win over Ulsan HD was their first at the club world cup after losing to Asian opposition Kashima Antlers and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors during the 2016 edition of the tournament. 'The identity of the club has to do with people that support us and we know how much people look at us and see themselves through us and what we do,' Cardoso concluded. 'Look, I'm Portuguese and I have nothing to do with South Africa and the township of Mamelodi but at the same time, I have a lot to do with it because I know the responsibility I have. When we had to play the football that we did, it's also because our fans want us to be loyal to that idea. 'It's their joy' It's their identity and it's their joy. When they dance, we dance with them, and that that's why I'm the middle of all the sensation of not having achieved the ultimate challenge of going through in the group stages, at the same time I know that almost all the people that support Sundowns have found in these three matches that we played a lot of identity. 'Now we are a lot stronger and I know at the same time in South Africa there will be a lot of people haters speaking bad about us but we grow from it when people speak bad about us.' Orlando Pirates news: Mother City star available, Moloisane update

Orlando Pirates will surely be enquiring about long-term target Jaedin Rhodes, who suffered heartbreak on Wednesday at the hands of Orbit College. Cape Town City's 1-0 defeat means they are officially relegated from the PSL, opening the door for the Buccaneers to finally get their man, a player they tried to sign in January and reportedly vowed to try again this offseason – now things just easier. 'One of those reinforcements could be a long-time target, Jaedin Rhodes. Although the 22-year-old has endured an underwhelming season with Cape Town City, he remains a high priority on the Buccaneers' list,' a source said before the offseason window. 'The club [Orlando Pirates] has been met with resistance by City in previous attempts to lure Rhodes to Gauteng, but according to sources, will try once more in the upcoming window. Complicating matters will be the Citizens' peculiar situation.' Stellenbosch centre-back Thabo Moloisane is another Western Cape-based star Orlando Pirates are eyeing, however, luring him might take more convincing. The defender is enjoying his time at Stellenbosch where he has risen up the ranks, earning himself a Bafana Bafana call-up. 'I think when you have interest in your name, it shows you're doing well and you're playing well, and I'm just happy that my work is finally showing,' he told SABC Sport. 'I've prayed for days when I'm a Bafana Bafana player, and I try by all means to remain as consistent as I can, and at the moment it's just to continue doing what I can, and God is in control, so we'll see.' 'For me, I know the right time, everything that has happened in my career has always come at the right time,' the Orlando Pirates target said. Both artists have shared the stage multiple times, forging mutual respect and fan following. Their shared passion for rugby provided the natural momentum to create an anthem that embodies the zeal of South African fans. 'Both of us are huge rugby fans,' Van Coke explained. 'It turned out to be a rugby song.' Given their shared passion for rugby, the decision to pen a rugby anthem together was a natural progression. Van Coke recalled the moment he embraced Wessels' title suggestion, 'Bokbefok'. 'I'm down with the title because I'm in a band called Fokofpolisiekar. But are you ready?' he asked, to which Wessels confidently retorted, 'I'm ready.' Wessels passionately believes that 'Bokbefok' stands as a landmark achievement in rugby music: 'If you take the song 'Hie' Kommie Bokke' and you multiply it with 'Die Bloubul' song and you multiply it with 'We Are the Champions', you are still not even close to the 'biggest rugby song of all time' that has just arrived.' Fans' reactions to the release have been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressions of delight flooding social media. Comments include, 'The collab we didn't realise we needed,' and 'Damn!! No, what can the goats do with the release other than win this weekend!' Another chimed in, 'Omg, the World Cup won't be back until 2027, boys ... You're warming us up early.' This outpouring of support highlights the value of the collaboration and its potential impact as the Springboks prepare for their crucial match.
