HC seeks govts' response on National Centre for Ageing across TN

on Tuesday sought a response from the Centre and state on a plea seeking a directive to establish a National Centre for Ageing in all districts in
Tamil Nadu
.
The court passed the order while hearing a public interest litigation filed by K K Ramesh.
The petitioner stated that several incidents are reported where elderly parents are neglected by their children.
In most cases, the parents are sent to elderly homes.
He claimed that most of the homes do not have proper facilities, causing elderly people to face difficulties. Proper medical care is also not provided to elderly people at those homes. Hence, the petitioner moved court.
A division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice A D Maria Clete observed that the concern raised by the petitioner pertains to the right to life enshrined under the Constitution.
It is the duty of the state to protect the lives of senior citizens. In recent days, senior citizens in vulnerable conditions have been targeted, and therefore, the adequate implementation of schemes to protect them is imminent and is the constitutional obligation of the state.
The judges noted that in order to evolve a procedure, the Centre and state must respond. The judges suo motu impleaded the secretary to the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment and the principal secretary of the social welfare department, Tamil Nadu, and sought a response from them.

Chennai: Health Minister Ma Subramanian sought the intervention of Union health minister J P Nadda to ensure that all 50% of seats earmarked for in-service candidates under the state quota are retained and made available in Round 2 of state-level NEET super-specialty counselling. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The first round of counselling for admission to super-specialty courses such as cardiology, nephrology, neurology, urology, cardiac, and vascular surgery, conducted by the medical counselling committee under the directorate general of health services (DGHS), ended on May 27. As per the Supreme Court order, Tamil Nadu reserved 50% of seats in these courses in govt medical colleges of the state exclusively for govt doctors (in-service candidates). While only 30% of candidates took the seats allotted to them, more than 70% of the 215 seats were vacant, officials said. While the state does not have adequate candiates qualified to join the course, officials said the Centre must consider in-service candidates if and when they reduce percentile scores in the subsequent rounds. On May 29, the state selection committee formally requested DGHS to indicate the dates for the second round of counselling to allow the upgradation of seats for in-service candidates. "However, it has come to our notice that the process of surrendering the unfilled in-service seats to the All-India Quota is being considered, without conducting the mandatory second round of counselling at the state level. Such a move would effectively deprive our in-service candidates of their rightful opportunity to upgrade or participate in further counselling and would be contrary to the spirit and intent of the Supreme Court's order," Subramanian wrote. He urged Nadda's intervention to ensure that all 50% of seats earmarked for in-service candidates under the state quota are retained and made available in Round 2 of counselling.

‘Avoid rath yatra if you have Covid symptoms'
Gandhinagar: While urging people to take precautions against Covid-19, state health minister Rushikesh Patel on Wednesday advised those with Covid-like symptoms and those with co-morbidities to refrain from participating in Lord Jagannath's rath yatra on June 27. "People who have symptoms like those of Covid-19 must refrain from participating in the rath yatra. Also, people with co-morbidities, the elderly, and those who have flu-like symptoms must remain in their houses and watch the rath yatra," Patel said while talking to reporters in Gandhinagar on Wednesday. He added that this will ensure that people who have symptoms will not transmit it to others, and co-morbid people will also not be exposed to infections. Elderly persons in Odisha to be enrolled under Vay Vandana by June 21
BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government has decided to enrol all elderly persons above 70 years under the Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana (AVVY) in a campaign mode in next 10 days. In April, Union minister for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda had rolled out the health assurance scheme in the state along with the Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana. Of around 23 lakh targeted beneficiaries, 3.45 lakh have been enrolled under the scheme. The Health and Family Welfare department has planned to achieve 100 per cent saturation during Bikash Vahan Jatra to be organised in the state from June 12 to 21. On Tuesday, health secretary Aswathy S asked all CDMOs to prepare a detailed GP-wise plan, tagging the CSCs, village-level workers, ASHAs and ANMs.
