Madurai: Madras high court on Tuesday sought a response from the Centre and state on a plea seeking a directive to establish a National Centre for Ageing in all districts in Tamil Nadu . The court passed the order while hearing a public interest litigation filed by K K Ramesh. The petitioner stated that several incidents are reported where elderly parents are neglected by their children. In most cases, the parents are sent to elderly homes. He claimed that most of the homes do not have proper facilities, causing elderly people to face difficulties. Proper medical care is also not provided to elderly people at those homes. Hence, the petitioner moved court. A division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice A D Maria Clete observed that the concern raised by the petitioner pertains to the right to life enshrined under the Constitution. It is the duty of the state to protect the lives of senior citizens. In recent days, senior citizens in vulnerable conditions have been targeted, and therefore, the adequate implementation of schemes to protect them is imminent and is the constitutional obligation of the state. The judges noted that in order to evolve a procedure, the Centre and state must respond. The judges suo motu impleaded the secretary to the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment and the principal secretary of the social welfare department, Tamil Nadu, and sought a response from them.

The senior citizens who are in vulnerable conditions are being targeted. Adequate implementation of schemes to protect the senior citizens is required and is the Constitutional obligation of the State. In order to evolve a procedure, the Centre and the State should respond, the court observed. The court suo motu impleaded the Secretary of the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Department. The court sought response from the Centre and the State and adjourned the hearing in the case by two weeks. The court was hearing the petition filed by K.K. Ramesh of Madurai. The petitioner said parents were being ignored by their own children. The elderly were being disrespected. The number of old age homes had increased. There are complaints that some old age homes charge high fees and do not take care of the elderly. This is causing difficulties to the elderly. Some old age homes do not provide basic facilities, food, medicine, etc, he said. The petitioner sought a direction to the Centre to establish National Centre for Ageing in all districts in the State.

Varanasi (UP), May 12 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday evening conducted an on-site inspection of key health infrastructure projects underway at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus, and told officials to ensure timely completion with adherence to quality standards. The upcoming National Centre for Ageing at IMS-BHU will be the third of its kind in India, following similar centres at AIIMS Delhi and Madras Medical College. The facility aims to provide comprehensive geriatric care under one roof, with 200 beds dedicated to elderly patients. Located near the Super Specialty Block on the vacant land adjacent to the petrol pump and nursing hostel, the six-storey centre is being developed under the National Programme for Healthcare of the Elderly. Currently, over 8,000 patients visit BHU hospital and trauma centre daily, of which more than 1,500 are aged 60 years and above. Construction is underway for a 150-bed Critical Care Unit at the BHU Trauma Centre. The Rs 119.47 crore facility will include three modular operation theatres, intensive care units, and other modern amenities.
