Man charged over car theft tied to synagogue attack
Detectives arrested a 20-year-old man before executing a search warrant at a home in Melbourne's west on Wednesday, where they seized multiple items.
The man has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, along with failing to provide access to applications on his phone.
Police allege the man stole a blue 2020-model VW Golf sedan at Melton on November 29, 2024.
The stolen car was used in other offences, including the Lux nightclub arson at South Yarra in November, as well as an arson and shooting at Bundoora.
Investigators do not consider the Bundoora and South Yarra incidents politically motivated attacks.
Police believe the car was used in the Adass Israel Synagogue arson attack on December 6.
Two of the synagogue's three buildings in Ripponlea, in Melbourne's southeast, were gutted in the fire.
Inside at the time were two congregants preparing for morning prayers who escaped, with one suffering minor injuries.
Photos and CCTV footage released by counter-terror police in May showed a Golf sedan repeatedly passing the synagogue before parking directly outside its main entrance.
Three people donning hoodies and masks get out of the vehicle and use an axe to damage the entrance of the building.
No one has been charged with carrying out the firebombing and the accused car thief is the first person to be accused of any offence linked to the attack.
Terrorism investigators continue to investigate the attack as a priority.
Investigators have combed through CCTV from more than 1400 locations and believe multiple offenders are directly and indirectly linked to the synagogue arson, police confirmed in May.
Detectives have been investigating several alleged acts of anti-Semitism across Melbourne in July, including an incident at the Israeli restaurant Miznon and the alleged arson attack on a East Melbourne Synagogue on July 5.
A group of worshippers was forced to flee the synagogue when a man allegedly set the building on fire during weekly services.
Police have since charged a 34-year-old man with multiple offences including reckless conduct endangering life and criminal damage by fire.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the "reprehensible anti-Semitic attacks" on both the Melbourne synagogue and the restaurant.
Police are continuing to work with people from the synagogue and other representatives from the Jewish community to ensure they have appropriate supports.
The 20-year-old charged with car theft was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on October 3.

Portable sauna units worth roughly $75K stolen from owner's lot in Winnipeg
The owner of a Winnipeg sauna company is worried about his family's livelihood and the future of their business after he said three of their mobile units were stolen from a lot ahead of its busiest season for rentals. The mobile saunas, made out of cedar and resembling the shape of a barrel, were picked by a black Dodge Ram, which then drove away from the lot on Archibald Street, Amir Hamed, owner of the Backyard Barrel business, told CBC News. The theft lasted a number of hours with the first barrel seen towed on surveillance footage at around 11 p.m. Friday and the last just after 3 a.m. on Saturday, Hamed said. "I honestly never thought they would get stolen, we even had the wheel locks on them … the back doors were locked," he said. "It's really unfortunate, but we're trying to make the best of it," Hamed said. "They're each worth $25,000, so we have $75,000 roughly missing." Winnipeg police said they received a report about the incident which will be referred to the property crimes unit for a follow-up investigation. The Backyard Barrel business operates five mobile units and Hamed said the two that weren't stolen had been rented out. Hamed had been trying to sell the business to spend more time with his family. He managed to secure a buyer but the deal fell through on Friday and hours later the three mobile units were stolen from his property. While he doesn't think the sale is related to the theft, both happening on the same day is "a lot of stuff to deal with." He is afraid the saunas will be torn apart and sold in pieces. But he remains hopeful the units can be recovered without major damages before September when the demand for mobile units starts to soar as temperature begins to drop. "This is our livelihood and it's going to impact selling it drastically," Hamed said. He is encouraging people to keep an eye for the units, in case they are listed for sale online. They are trademarked and have a tin roof, a wooden stove and a panoramic window.

Apartment building remodeled nearly a year after deadly fire; residents remember fatal night
It's been one year since flames ripped through a four-story apartment in Minneapolis' Elliot Park neighborhood. An investigation into the Aug. 13, 2024, fire on the 1500 block of 11th Avenue South revealed the cause to be "incendiary/intentional," according to the Minneapolis Fire Department. Responding crews found a fire on the third floor of the building and set to work rescuing residents inside. Two days after the fire, following multiple sweeps by the department, a man and a woman were found dead inside. The additional search was prompted by the property manager, who told investigators he hadn't seen one of his tenants since the fire. A woman is accused of intentionally setting a downtown Minneapolis apartment on fire last August, killing two people, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County. The 35-year-old woman from Minneapolis was charged with two felony counts of second-degree murder and three counts of first-degree arson Now, the 22-unit building is remodeled and fully occupied and equipped with a sprinkler system — something property manager David Hollman says the building did not have the night of the deadly fire. "Now that everything has been upgraded, we have a sprinkler system throughout the building," Hollman smiled. Tenants who now call it home say the remodel is beautiful, but it's hard to forget what happened. "I believe the sprinkler system probably would have saved lives for sure," said Jason Roers.

Police warning after double crime in Bradford district town
POLICE have issued a warning after two crimes in a Bradford district town. West Yorkshire Police regularly posts on its Community Alert website to notify the public of recorded crimes in their area and to keep neighbourhoods informed. On Friday, two posts appeared about separate recorded crimes in Ilkley. One of them happened in the early hours of Thursday morning. The post said, "the victim was woken by sounds of a vehicle being driven at speed on Eaton Road, Ilkley" at 3.30am. They then realised that their 68 plate, grey Seat Leon had been taken, according to the post. It added: "It is unknown how the vehicle was stolen but it was established that the keys (still at the address) were located close to the front door. "It is possible that a keyless entry signal booster may have been used." Police attached a leaflet to the post for advice on helping preventing this type of theft. It added: "The outer casing had been bent back and the lock barrel snapped. "Fortunately, no entry was gained to the property. "The victim also noticed that their car had been entered and items removed, including a purse, cash and cards. "Please remember to remove all valuables from your vehicles overnight or when left unattended." "The attached leaflet provides information around anti-snap locks, which appear to have prevented a burglary on this occasion."
