Chelsea's clash with Benfica was heavily delayed in Charlotte

The world's biggest clubs have descended on the USA for a month-long football extravaganza.
Although the tournament has been around for some time, this is the first time it's taken place in it's current format with 32 teams taking part across a month-long competition.
Bayern Munich, Chelsea, PSG, Palmeiras and Real Madrid are among the teams still standing with the round of 16 almost complete.
While there's been plenty of great football on show, the competition has been heavily criticised.
Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has branded it 'the worst idea ever' in relation to the strain being put on players.
The Premier League winner highlighted concerns over the fact players participating would get 'no real recovery' with the Club World Cup taking place between the end of last season and the start of the next one.
Those sentiments have been echoed across the board.
The weather has also proved a problem, with several games heavily delayed.
On Saturday night, Chelsea beat Benfica 4-1 after extra time in in Charlotte, North Carolina.
But the last 16 clash took more than FOUR HOURS to complete after a two-hour weather delay.
Ally McCoist confesses to 'horrendous' epic fail ahead of final day of Rangers legend's charity bike ride
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was fuming about the lengthy delay and has blasted: "I think it's a joke, to be honest.
"It's not football, it's completely something new. I struggle to understand.
"I can understand if it's security reasons but if you suspend seven or eight games then it's probably not the right place to do the competition.
"It's not normal to suspend the game. In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Zero probably. In Europe how many games get suspended? Zero."
Someone else who isn't a fan of the competition is Ally McCoist.
The Rangers legend was back on talkSPORT Breakfast duties today after a bit of time away - time away that included a gruelling charity cycle across Ireland.
Those other endeavours meant McCoist didn't have much time to sit in front of the telly to watch the football - but he's admitted he didn't really have any interest in doing so anyway.
Responding to Klopp's brutal comments, McCoist said: "I'm not sure I'd go that far but he's certainly against it.
"I'll be brutally honest, I haven't watched it.
"I know I've been busy, away cycling and all that stuff.
"I'll be honest with you, my boys are watching it, particularity the younger one and I'll watch it now.
"I watched the highlights of the Chelsea game, I watched Harry Kane's goals last night.
"I'm probably a little bit embarrassed to say, now it's got to the quarter finals, last 16, I will take an interest but I didn't have any interest, seemingly about a million empty seats of people agreed with me."
Asked if his new-found interest in the Club World Cup would see him getting up at 2am to watch Man City's clash with Al Hilal tonight, McCoist said: "No. I'll take an interest in the result in that one.
"There's been a lot of things. The weather, the times of the kick-offs, I don't care what anybody says, it does affect your interest."

Jose Mourinho submits bid for Arsenal star as Mikel Arteta drops asking price
Jose Mourinho has sanctioned a Fenerbahce transfer bid for Oleksandr Zinchenko and Arsenal have dropped their asking price for the defender. Mourinho was keen to strengthen his Fenerbahce squad this summer after his side finished second in the Super Lig last season, 11 points behind Turkish champions Galatasaray. The former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham manager has overseen a productive transfer window, bringing the likes of Jhon Duran, Sofyan Amrabat and Milan Skriniar to the club. But Mourinho is eyeing up further deals before the summer transfer window shuts and has sanctioned Fenerbahce's move for versatile Gunners star Zinchenko. Turkish journalist Sercan Hamzaoglu says Fenerbahce have submitted an official offer for Zinchenko and claims negotiations are 'advancing quickly'. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. The amount of the bid has not been disclosed but Hamzaoglu also says Arsenal are asking for around £13m for a player who has entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Emirates Stadium. That represents a lower fee that Arsenal were said to be demanding earlier in the summer when AC Milan expressed interest in four-time Premier League winner Zinchenko. Fenerbahce sporting director Devin Ozek reportedly held talks with both Zinchenko and Arsenal counterpart Andrea Berta over the weekend to work on a deal. Arsenal paid £30m to sign Zinchenko from Manchester City in 2022 and the Ukrainian was an integral member of Mikel Arteta's squad during his first two seasons in north London, playing as a left-back who would often move into midfield to dictate play. But Zinchenko struggled for game-time last season and Arsenal decided earlier in the summer to put him up for sale. Jorginho (released) Nathan Butler-Oyedeji (released) Elian Quesada-Thorn (released) Kieran Tierney (released) Takehiro Tomiyasu (released) Raheem Sterling (end of loan) Neto (end of loan) Nuno Tavares (transfer to Lazio) Marquinhos (transfer to Cruzeiro) AC Milan were believed to be leading the race to sign Zinchenko but talks over a £17m deal with the Italian giants collapsed. Arsenal's London rivals Fulham have also expressed interest in a deal but Fenerbahce have jumped to the front of the queue after making a bid to the Gunners. As well as spending around £200m on new signings this summer, Arsenal have been busy offloading unwanted players and released Jorginho, Thomas Partey, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney. More Trending The Premier League runners-up will consider selling Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli and Jakub Kiwior should suitable offers arrive. In terms of further incomings, Arteta is keen to sign England winger Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace, who have given Arsenal hope of a deal. Arteta's side begin their 2025-26 Premier League campaign on Sunday with a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. This fixture last season ended 1-1 after Declan Rice's 74th-minute equaliser cancelled out Bruno Fernandes' first-half opener. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Why Man Utd fans cancelled planned protest before Arsenal game
A Manchester United supporters' group, The 1958, has postponed a planned protest against the club's ownership. The demonstration was initially organised for 17 August, ahead of United's opening Premier League match against Arsenal, targeting minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The 1958, known for previous protests against the Glazer family, extended their frustration to Ratcliffe over his operational changes and perceived collaboration with the Glazers. The group stated that Ratcliffe, who acquired a 28.94 per cent stake and took operational control in February 2024, was "no saviour" and "helping keep them in charge." The postponement followed a survey revealing a split in fan opinion, with the group deciding it was irresponsible to risk internal conflict among supporters. Barcelona get green light to play LaLiga match in MIAMI – could Premier League games be next?
MIAMI VICE Barcelona get green light to play LaLiga match in MIAMI – could Premier League games be next? Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PREM chiefs have NO interest in playing games abroad - despite Spanish FA bosses giving the green light for Barcelona to face Villarreal in Miami in December. Fifa made a U-turn over domestic matches being allowed to be played outside their home territories last year, settling a drawn-out legal case in the US. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Barcelona are set to play a LaLiga match in Miami - but Prem chiefs have no plans to follow suit Credit: Shutterstock Editorial That opened the way for serious negotiations, with the Spanish FA confirming they will ask Fifa and Uefa to approve the December 21 LaLiga clash that was scheduled for Villarreal's Estadio de la Ceramica instead being played at the Miami Dolphins' Hard Rock Stadium the previous day. But Prem bosses are insistent that there remain no plans or even desires to follow suit. While there has not been a formal written statement dismissing the idea, League chief executive Richard Masters has consistently maintained the Prem is a domestic competition that is played in the UK, stating last year the idea was 'not in our current plans'. Only last week, Masters reiterated: 'We had a look at that back in 2008. It was very controversial in the UK. 'The idea behind playing matches abroad is to grow the sport, to grow your league. 'But we've managed to do that in the intervening period, by different methods, broadcasting partnerships, digital technology, events like our Summer Series, making the Premier League truly global. 'I genuinely think it's the world's favourite version of the world's favourite sport, and we're really proud of that. 'So there's a whole bunch of reasons not to do it, but mainly because we're happy with what we have in the UK and we're not changing that. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS 'We have clubs that have hosted NFL games and an interesting relationship with the NFL but on this particular topic we're very different. We've got no plans to take matches abroad - there would be significant pushback.' Masters will reiterate that stance, if asked, in his pre-season message on Thursday. Lionel Messi unboxes his Epic X Tourbillon FC Barcelona watch However, the position of the League is conditional on the wishes of the clubs, with the majority of the 20 'shareholders' now under foreign ownership. Some 11 of them, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool, have majority US owners. Under Prem regulations, major decisions or changes require the approval of 14 clubs to be confirmed. At this stage there have been no formal votes on playing games overseas since the collapse of the infamous '39th game' idea in 2008. Were such a proposal to be passed it would be a major test of the Government's new Independent Regulator, which would be under pressure to step in and block the idea.
