AFL fans call out Demons over Simon Goodwin's farewell snub as club great in shock
Melbourne Demons great Garry Lyon has been left shocked at the timing of Simon Goodwin's axing with three games left to go in the season with suggestions the veteran is unlikely to coach a farewell game. On Tuesday morning it emerged the Melbourne Demons had sacked Goodwin following a convincing 83-point win over West Coast. There were suggestions Goodwin would be let go if Melbourne lost to West Coast on the weekend. The demolition of the lowly Eagles seemed to quell the noise momentarily with a decision to be made at the end of the season. Although the win didn't save Goodwin from the axe with the timing of the move leaving supporters in shock. Goodwin coached Melbourne to their first premiership in 57 years years back in 2021 having taken over from Paul Roos. But Goodwin had only managed to coach the Demons to seven wins in 2025 and performances across the last few years had prompted calls for change. And Lyon admitted he was struggling to get his head around the decision to pull the trigger with three games left to go. Speaking on SEN Radio as the news dropped, Lyon suggested there might not be a farewell game for Goodwin who deserved a send off having delivered the side their only premiership in recent times. 'I'm stunned, shocked, totally shocked,' Lyon said on SEN Radio. 'I had no heads up on this whatsoever. Absolutely just shocked, I can't get my head around it. He won't be coaching a farewell game, that's something I can promise you.' And fans have echoed Lyon's confusion to why the decision happened now. Many feel the Demons had left the decision so late it was only right to let Goodwin see out the season and have a farewell. With little to play for, the fans could have got behind the coach with three games left if they let him ride out the season. Unfortunately, it appears Goodwin and Melbourne will go their separate ways immediately with the supporters most likely not given an opportunity to get behind their premiership-winning coach one last time. I think a parting of ways at the end of the season would have been more respectful to our only premiership coach in nearly 70 years but a change was you Simon Goodwin for helping turn our club around and the memory of 2021 ❤️💙@melbournefc #AFL — Julian Cross (@CrossJulian) August 4, 2025 Shocked by the decision to sack Goodwin right now. Hope he is remembered as a legend of the footy club. What the Demons do next is very interesting…Do they see this as an opportunity to challenge again with a fresh voice? Or is it a total wipe out of star players? — Matt Nevett (@matt_nevett_) August 4, 2025 Can't but feel like we could've waited until the end of the year & given our only living premiership coach a bit of a send off. 100% the right call but jeez this man delivered something that I never thought we'd ever see. Thanks Goody that day in 2021 will be forever the greatest — James Plunkett (@jplunkett21) August 4, 2025 Lyon felt the call came prematurely with Goodwin's stature as a premiership winner going to see him reach the end of the season. 'I'm absolutely stunned. I thought there would be a long review at the end of this year and then determine whether he would coach out his final year,' he added. 'Premiership coaches are pretty rare at the Melbourne footy club. He's one of four. He will be a hero of this football club forever and a day, but that obviously doesn't guarantee your tenure. This is a massive call.' Melbourne making moves with Simon Goodwin axing After Melbourne capitulated in round 20, Goodwin shut down outside noise and said he was fully committed to the job at hand. "I feel incredibly supported by the board, I have for nine years," Goodwin said last Thursday. "We've been able to go through these challenges before with clarity and strength and stability to create success." Goodwin won the 2021 flag with one of the youngest teams of the modern era and started their 2022 title defence in solid form. However, Goodwin couldn't get past the early stages of the finals since the flag having exited in straight sets in 2022 and 2023. Last year, Melbourne finished in 14th and they currently sit in 12th and are out of finals contention. The Demons hierarchy may have called time on Goodwin's season with three games to go in a bid to get ahead of their rivals in the search for a new head coach. There are suggestions a number of teams could be looking at change for the 2026 season and the Demons have made their move first. Only last week, AFL great Matthew Lloyd claimed he didn't think a win against the Eagles would ease the pressure on Goodwin's tenure as coach. "I don't think so, no," Lloyd said when asked on Nine's Today Show. "Moreso if they lost that game, that could spell the end for Simon Goodwin you would think, if they were to lose to West Coast who have won one game for the season. They have been off for a couple of years now, there is something not quite right."

Tennis Pro Amanda Anisimova's Boyfriend Was on a Popular Reality Show
Amanda Anisimova is one of the few U.S. tennis players still competing in Wimbledon 2025. Her Instagram page is filled with swimsuit and tennis photos, with no hint of a boyfriend. According to Essentially Sports, she was dating Tyler Roos, a relationship that started in mid-2020. Roos has posted photos of Anisimova to his Instagram page, including one that says he taught her all she knows. He hasn't posted about her recently, though, and it's not clear whether they are still together. In 2020, Yahoo Sports reported that Anisimova was dating Roos, describing him as a model in Melbourne and "the son of AFL legend Paul Roos." He also was featured on a popular reality television show, The Amazing Race Australia. In May, the Guardian described how Anisimova took a break from tennis two years before. 'I had done that my whole life – pushing through everything – because I never took any breaks,' Anisimova, who was a teen phenom, told the Guardian. 'I felt like it was just unfair for me to keep pushing and pushing as if I'm not a human being.' She added, 'I was just struggling with the lifestyle and just dealing with a lot of stress from it, and it was affecting me a lot on the court." Anisimova "spent time with friends and family," the article says, making no mention of Roos. In 2024, she was "spotted partying in Miami" after losing at the Australian Open. She started dating Roos shortly after suffering a major tragedy; her father died of a heart attack at the age of 52. Roos's dad was the Melbourne Demons and Sydney Swans coach and is considered a legend in Australia. He commented positively on a photo of the young couple early on in their relationship, according to Pro Amanda Anisimova's Boyfriend Was on a Popular Reality Show first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 8, 2025

'These cats can play': Glenwood softball wins in extra innings for another IHSA state title
PEORIA — Once New Lenox Providence Catholic tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning of a state championship game that eventually went to extra innings, it was clear that Chatham Glenwood softball's standout pitcher Irie Lohrenz would have to perform. That happened not only with her arm, but with the bat in her hands in the top of the eighth inning. Advertisement Lohrenz drove in what turned out to be the state title-winning run, and Glenwood ended the season on a 28-game winning streak by beating the Celtics 3-2 in the IHSA Class 3A state championship game on Saturday, June 14, at Louisville Slugger Sports Complex. It's the second title in program history; the first came in 2014. 'I know these cats can play some softball, and they're outstanding people,' Glenwood coach Vondel Edgar said. Even several minutes after the final out, sophomore Ava Bobb was trying to find the right words to describe the feeling. 'It's surreal. Like, I can't even describe it,' Bobb said. 'I'm so happy. This was our goal the whole season and we finally reached it, so I couldn't be happier.' Advertisement In the pivotal eighth inning and with Sophia Feld on second and one out, Lohrenz hit a single over the head of Providence center fielder Angelina Cole. It was the second time Feld crossed home, the first on a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning that gave Glenwood (37-1) a 2-0 lead. 'The wind was blowing on our way today and we've had a lot of hits I thought were pretty close going out,' Feld said. 'I was just trying to square up one and it went over." The Titans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Feld reached on an error and Bobb scored. Glenwood was methodical at the plate and had runners on in every inning except the fourth, but stranded nine runners. That kept the Celtics (26-12) in the game, and they took advantage in the sixth inning. Bella Cortes ripped a leadoff triple to right-center field and Angelina Cole put Providence on the board with a ground-rule double. Two batters later, Aleigh Hill tied the game with an RBI infield single deep in the hole at shortstop. Bobb got to the ball, but she was unable to make the throw. Advertisement 'They got one more big hit than we did,' Providence coach Jim Holba said. 'It's something we've talked about with the girls all year: timely hits and making plays when we have to defensively. I thought we were moving along with that. We just couldn't get it done.' In the top of the eighth, Feld singled up the middle and moved to second on Sydney Feld's sacrifice bunt ahead of Lohrenz's biggest RBI single of her career. 'I was just trying to produce an at-bat,' said Lohrenz, who had been 0-for-3 on the day. 'Me and my dad talk about this all the time. Just catch the ball with the bat and see where it goes. If the defense makes plays credits to them. But I was really focused on staying short and quick to the ball.' The bottom half of the inning required Lohrenz and the Glenwood defense to just keep doing what it has all season: prevent runs. When Bobb grabbed the final out, the Titans broke out into a long-awaited celebration. Glenwood girls celebrates winning the Class 3A state championship game against New Lenox Providence Catholic in softball Saturday, June 14, 2025. Glenwood secured the win against the Celtics' Nos. 2-4 hitters. Advertisement 'Winning feels good because it's hard, and that's a great group over there,' Edgar said of his second state title. 'I mean, the resiliency (Providence) showed put us to the test, and I think it just made us show some other qualities. 'I don't know what it feels like, but I know I'm pleased, and I'm really happy for these kids because they did everything that we ever asked from the time they were freshmen walking through the door until they graduated. Great leadership, great role models for younger kids, and you can't ask more for that.' In the bottom of the fourth, Glenwood senior third baseman Mollie Cascio made the biggest play to that point. Providence had runners at first and second with one out and No. 7 hitter Olivia Vittori hit the pitch down the third-base line. Cascio hoovered it up, touched third and set herself before making a perfect throw to Jenna Hazard at first base for the inning-ending double play. 'Actually, during that play when I stepped on the base and looked over to first base ... I didn't see Jenna, Irie was standing in the way,' Cascio said. 'I kind of just threw where I knew the base was and luckily Irie eventually ducked down and I made the play.' Advertisement Fifteen months ago, sophomores Bobb and Gilmore played for a state championship in basketball. Bobb already had a runner-up medal from that run, but she wanted a gold. That experience, a 60-44 loss to Lincoln, showed those two how to remain calm throughout the postseason. 'It definitely did help a little; it helped with the nerves,' Bobb said. 'When I first went on a big stage like that for basketball, it was definitely nerve-wracking, especially being so young and just being in an environment that I've never been in before. It really helped having all the girls that I love just surround me and have confidence in me and we all got each other's backs. It makes it all much easier to just go out there and play our game.'
