Prince of Wales tries his hand at refereeing football
He is often spotted cheering on Aston Villa from the stands but the Prince of Wales has now had a crash course in how to referee football matches.
Prince William, patron of the Football Association, was put through his paces at Sporting Khalsa FC in Willenhall, West Midlands.
The club is one of several across the country running courses designed to improve diversity by training black, Asian and mixed heritage people over the age of 14 in how to become match officials.
It combines theory and practical training to support those learning to be referees and other roles.
The Prince took part in a training session in a classroom where students were shown video clips before being asked to decide whether the action on screen warranted a red card, a yellow card or no card.
He joined participants in standing in different sections of the room depending on their decision.
Picking up his red and yellow cards, he joked: 'I'll follow the crowd.'
When asked why he had decided to give a red card, William gestured to two girls beside him and said: 'I'll take advice from you two.'
He then added: 'I think that it's studs out. Straight leg. I think it's dangerous, because of the height of where it is.'
Told he had made the correct call, the Prince then moved to a football pitch where he was taught about different whistle tones and flag signals.
Jogging up and down, at one point he was gently admonished for his overzealous use of the whistle, which he was told was not needed.
He was then taught about when to signal with his flag before practising side-stepping along the touchline. He later joined a mini-game to referee students taking part in the course.
The Prince was 30 minutes late to the engagement after stopping off en route for a private visit to see Aston Villa in training ahead of their Champions League clash against Club Brugge on Wednesday.
When he eventually arrived, he was given a raucous welcome by more than 100 cheering schoolchildren from Fibbersley Park Primary Academy, who were waving home-made flags and signs.
The Prince shook hands and gave high fives, stopping to chat to a child waving a sign that read 'Aston Villa are the best'.
When the Prince finally made it onto the pitch, he told Manjit Gill and Inder Grewal, the club's directors: 'Sorry to keep you guys waiting. I just broke the record for the number of high fives in 10 minutes.'

Ex-Hearts & Hibs defender hails Ibrox as 'noisiest' stadium
Demetri Mitchell, who currently plays for Exeter City, made the claim during an appearance on the 'From My Left' podcast. Read more: The 28-year-old, who played for both Tynecastle and Easter Road, said: "I've played in some big derbies like Hearts and Hibs. "I've played at Celtic Park. "I've played at Ibrox. "That's the noisiest stadium I've played in, Ibrox. "Bro, when the ball went out for a corner, my ears were ringing, ringing." Mitchell is not the first player to be impressed by the noise levels at the home of Rangers. Former Germany internationals Sami Khedira and Mario Gomez both recently praised Ibrox. Khedira, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, said: "For me, the most craziest experience ever was my first Champions League match. "We played Glasgow Rangers and it was such an amazing experience." Gomez, who won the Champions League with Bayern Munich, said: "I would say the Scottish fans like Celtic but to me I played against the Rangers and I will never forget this. "They've been really strong."

Man Utd, Liverpool and Tottenham battling it out for Bournemouth standout
There is a three-way battle on between Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool for a player who enjoyed an eye-catching season in the Premier League last time round. Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo scored 11 Premier League goals and 13 in all competitions as he continued to impress for the Cherries. The 25-year-old signed from Bristol City in January 2023 and has been gradually improving on the step up to the top flight. His performances have been good enough to attract some heavyweight attention, with Bournemouth now facing a battle to keep hold of the Ghana international. Sky Sports report that Tottenham and Manchester United are both showing an interest in Semenyo, while he was already believed to be on Liverpool's list of targets. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. The report states that the forward's preference is a move to a Champions League club, which will leave Manchester United at a disadvantage, but the Red Devils retain significant pulling power, despite their disastrous last season. Spurs and United are also scrapping it out for the signature of Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and whichever club wins that race will have an impact on Semenyo's future. Manchester United are more focussed on the Bees star than the Cherries forward and it is unlikely they would move for Semenyo if they are successful in snapping up Mbeumo. Any club wanting to sign Semenyo this summer will have to spend big, with Bournemouth keen to keep hold of a player they paid £10m for. The Sun reported in March that the Cherries would ask for £75m from any interested party. Semenyo had a trial with Spurs as a teenager, as he did at Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Fulham, all of which were unsuccessful before he was eventually given a chance by Bristol City. He used those disappointments as motivation, telling Football Focus last year: 'As a 15- or 16-year-old, you don't know how to cope with your emotions – being so high, being so upset all the time. 'I did have a lot of doubts but I had positive parents. They always told me life's not always going to be roses. 'They are all experiences that you have to go through. But it's definitely helped me and motivated me to this day.' Appearances: 81 Goals: 20 Assists: 7 Yellow cards: 15 Red cards: 0 Bournemouth have already sold Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid this summer for £50m and Milos Kerkez is expected to leave for Liverpool for around £40m. More Trending The significant departures mean the Cherries will not have to sell and will not want to lose any further players from Andoni Iraola's starting XI. Their impressive season under the Spaniard was well observed, though, with Illya Zabarnyi another player targeted for a big move. Champions League winners PSG are keen on the Ukrainian defender, who Bournemouth signed from Dynamo Kiev in 2023.
