Benin Grants Citizenship to African Diaspora Descendants, Including US Singer Ciara
The event marked the implementation of Benin's Diaspora Citizenship Law, enacted in September 2024, which formally recognizes descendants of Africans affected by the transatlantic slave trade as part of the national identity.
President Patrice Talon personally handed over naturalization certificates to the honorees, in what was described as a symbolic and emotional gesture aimed at restoring a broken connection with ancestral roots.
In a heartfelt speech, Ciara expressed deep gratitude to the people of Benin, stating: 'Today, I am not just an artist… I am Beninese, and that means more than words can express.' However, she did not clarify whether she would retain her US citizenship alongside her new Beninese nationality.
President Talon emphasized that the granted citizenship is not merely symbolic. Recipients will enjoy full constitutional rights and are required to reside in Benin for at least three years from the date of naturalization.
The recipients also took a formal oath of allegiance, pledging to uphold the Constitution and defend the dignity of the republic.
Digital Roots Revival
As part of this cultural and political initiative, Benin's government launched a multilingual digital platform to allow members of the African diaspora—particularly those in the Americas and the Caribbean—to apply for citizenship.
The platform is a key feature of Benin's new cultural diplomacy strategy, designed to strengthen spiritual and historical ties between the nation and its dispersed descendants across the globe.

Egypt, U.S. FMs Discuss Strategic Partnership, Regional Crises in Washington
Nada Mustafa Egypt's Foreign Minister (FM) Dr. Badr Abdelatty, met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington to discuss ways of strengthening the close bilateral ties between Egypt and the United States (U.S.), as well as to exchange views on several regional and international issues of mutual concern. Durong their meeting, Abdelatty conveyed the greetings and appreciation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to President Donald Trump, affirming Egypt's pride in its longstanding strategic partnership with US. Moreover, he expressed Egypt's keenness to continue close coordination and cooperation with the U.S. administration under President Trump's leadership to deepen the partnership in political, security, military, and economic spheres, especially during this critical period for the Middle East. He also reiterated Egypt's interest in resuming the U.S.-Egypt Strategic Dialogue on a regular basis. Both ministers explored avenues to boost economic, trade, and investment cooperation. In this regard, Abdelatty praised the outcomes of the Egypt-U.S. Business Forum held in Cairo last May, which saw the participation of more than 50 American companies, including 12 firms entering the Egyptian market for the first time. This, he noted, reflects Egypt's commitment to attracting foreign investment and enhancing economic partnerships with the United States. Furthermore, the two ministers emphasized the importance of continuing coordination to convene a new round of meetings for the Joint Economic Commission and another edition of the Egypt-U.S. Business Forum to expand bilateral economic cooperation. The talks included extensive discussions on urgent regional developments, foremost among them the catastrophic situation in Gaza, the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, and ongoing challenges in Libya, Syria, Lebanon, and Africa, as well as concerns related to Egypt's water security. On the Palestinian issue, Abdelatty reiterated the necessity of reaching a permanent ceasefire agreement in Gaza. He emphasized the importance of ending bloodshed and ensuring the sustained flow of humanitarian aid into the besieged territory, which is suffering from a deliberate Israeli starvation policy. He also called for urgent action to address the worsening humanitarian crisis and stressed the need to revive a political horizon for a just and sustainable resolution to the Palestinian cause. This includes restoring the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. In addition, Abdelatty expressed hope for continued close collaboration with the U.S. administration to lay the foundation for comprehensive and just peace in the Middle East that serves all peoples of the region. Regarding Sudan, the two ministers discussed the importance of securing a ceasefire and facilitating humanitarian access. In the same context, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's support for Sudanese state institutions, emphasizing respect for Sudan's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. As for Egypt's water security, Abdelatty conveyed Egypt's concerns over the Nile River issue and reaffirmed Egypt's position that any agreement must comply with international law governing transboundary water resources. He stressed the urgent need to reach a legally binding agreement regulating the operation of the Ethiopian dam and rejected Ethiopia's unilateral actions, which violate international norms. OPEN// FM affirms special nature of Egypt–US relations
CAIRO, July 30 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Affairs Badr Abdelatty asserted the special nature of the relationship between Egypt and the US. He expressed Egypt's keenness to strengthen cooperation and coordination with both chambers of the US Congress in various fields that serve the mutual interests of the two nations. This came during his meeting in Washington with US Senator Brian Schatz, a ranking member of the US Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations. Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's interest in deepening economic, trade and investment relations with the US. He highlighted the outcomes of the Egypt-US Economic Forum, held in Cairo on May 25-26, which brought together over 50 American companies and marked a significant step in enhancing bilateral economic engagement. Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's continued efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East, amid growing challenges in the region. Regarding the situation in Gaza, Abdelatty presented Egypt's ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at securing a ceasefire and ensuring the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to the besieged enclave, where living conditions continue to deteriorate. He also underlined Egypt's broader efforts to restore calm and create the conditions necessary for a just and lasting political resolution to the Palestinian cause.
