Nancy Mace ran bot army, had staff run fake accounts to boost profile, report claims: ‘It's what she does for fun'
Mace, a third-term House member with reported ambitions to run for governor, directs staffers to run countless bot accounts and fake social media profiles on her behalf — all with the aim of boosting Mace's content and messaging, according to a new report from Wired Wednesday that cited several unnamed former staffers and a consultant who publicly ended his contract with the congresswoman.
The report quoted a deposition from Wesley Donehue, a South Carolina-based campaign consultant who previously worked closely with Mace's campaigns. The deposition, first reported a week earlier by a local conservative news blog, FITS News, was taken by attorneys for Mace's ex-fiancee — whom she accused of sexual assault, along with three other men, in a jarring moment during a congressional hearing.
Wired's reporting echoed the claim made by Donehue, who told a court: 'She programs her own bots. She sets up Twitter burner accounts. This is the kind of a thing she does. She sits all night on the couch and programs bots, because she's very, very computer savvy. She controls her own voter database, she programs a lot of her own website, she programs Facebook bots and Instagram bots and Twitter bots. It's what she does for fun.'
According to a staffer, Mace would allegedly order her underlings to identify criticism of her on social media; a slew of fake accounts would then pile on the offending account.
'We were congressional staff, and there were actual things we could be doing to help the constituents,' one said.
The Independent has reached out to the congresswoman's office for comment.
A spokesperson for Mace's team told Wired that they would not comment on the congresswoman's personal life.
'The only relationship the congresswoman cares about is her one with South Carolina,' said Sydney Long, according to the outlet.
But that wasn't the case earlier this month when Mace showed a blurry image of what she said was her own naked body — an image she said was taken without her consent — during a congressional hearing as she called for stronger penalties for sexual offenders who film people without their knowledge in private spaces.
Instead, Mace dragged four men including her ex-fiancee by name into the hearing and labeled them 'predators.' Patrick Bryant, her ex-fiancee, and the three other men have all maintained their innocence in regard to her accusations.
Meanwhile, the deposition that Bryant forced Donehue to give revealed that Mace spent so much of her time on her 'relationships,' despite her staffer's denial, that it was the defining factor leading to Donehue abandoning her as a client and publicly disowning her.
According to FITS News, Donehue said under oath that the congresswoman wanted him constantly 'to intervene in her relationship problems with Patrick Bryant' and later 'asked me to blackmail Patrick Bryant'. He went on to call her a 'chronic liar who constantly plays the victim card for her own benefit.'
'Nancy talks about her sex life in a way that I've never heard a client or a woman talk,' Donehue added.
'This goes beyond Patrick. This is with multiple partners. She loves talking about sex,' he claimed.
According to Donehue, 'every conversation would devolve into what's going on in her sex life…something that she talked about all the time and I always felt uncomfortable with.'
The congresswoman has been one of the most polarizing figures on the Hill since she arrived. A onetime 'NeverTrumper', she like others completed an evolution into a pro-Trump believer that saved her from successive primary challenges backed by both Donald Trump and Kevin McCarthy, the former House speaker. She was one of a small group of GOP rebels who ousted McCarthy as speaker of the House in 2023.
She's no stranger to accusations of her own, with staffers calling her abusive and 'toxic'. Between 2023-2024, her office underwent more staff turnover than any other — with every single staff member quitting and being replaced over the course of one year.

Police looking for five suspects charged in viral Cincinnati brawl
Police are searching for five people charged in connection with a brawl in Cincinnati after footage of the incident went viral and prompted reaction by US Vice-President JD Vance and Elon Musk. Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge did not release names or the details of the charges, and said during a news conference Monday that police were on the lookout for the suspects. "Anyone who put their hands on another individual during this incident in an attempt to cause harm will face consequences," Theetge told reporters. The melee happened just after 03:00 local time Saturday, Theetge said, and footage went viral after being posted online, including to a local crime-focused Facebook page. It's unclear what triggered the brawl or happened before or after people started recording the incident with their phones. One video showed two men square off, with bystanders variously filming, watching and attempting to intervene, before a vicious fight broke out. One of the men was surrounded by others who began beating him in the middle of a downtown street. Other scuffles broke out and a man was seen punching a woman until she lost consciousness. Theetge said that out of the roughly 100 people in the area at the time only one called police and that alcohol consumption played a part. "They were fighting in front of traffic. Why didn't somebody [else] call us?" the police chief said. Vice-President Vance told a crowd in Canton, Ohio on Monday that the incident was "disgusting". 'What I saw, and I haven't seen the full context, but what I saw is a mob of lawless thugs beating up on an innocent person," he said. "I hope every single one of those people who engage in violence is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." Vance grew up nearby and his half-brother Cory Bowman is running for mayor of Cincinnati. Bowman criticised city officials and called the video a "wake-up call". Vivek Ramaswamy, a former Republican Party presidential candidate who also grew up in the area and is running for Ohio governor, criticised the response and accused "leftists" of being soft on crime. Chief Theetge said traffic was heavy in the area because of several events late Friday, but officers were on the scene six minutes after the call. By that time, the assailants had scattered. The virality of the video was also propelled by people suggesting that race was a motivation for the fighting and that the story allegedly did not receive media attention because several assailants were black. An unnamed witness told local news station WXIX the confrontation began 15 minutes before the video's start and a group was overheard making "racial comments". One man in the initial confrontation shown on the video was white while several others were black, and the white man was later beaten by a group of what appeared to be mostly black men after the serious violence began. The woman who was punched appeared to be white and struck by a younger black man. Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights, posted: "Nobody in our great nation should be the victim of such a crime, and where race is a motivation, federal law may apply." Videos, though, also showed black men trying to help quell the violence. Signal 99, the Facebook account that first brought some of the footage to light, posted that "these are not blacks targeting whites, simply for being white". "We saw several black men attempt to intervene last night, knowing they could be jumped next by the mob. So please stop with the racist commentary," the post also read. The uncertainty around the event did not stop several popular right-wing accounts from speculating about its cause. "HORRIFIC: White couple brutally beat by black mob in Cincinnati," wrote the Libs of TikTok account on X. "You probably won't see this story in the MSM [mainstream media]." ‘Tariff rebates' proposed: How would they work?
(NEXSTAR) — If you've been waiting and hoping for another stimulus check since receiving your last COVID relief payment in 2021, you may be in luck. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has introduced legislation that would send out 'tariff rebates' meant to 'allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump's tariffs are returning to this country.' As The Hill reports, the rebates would be modeled after the payments sent out after Congress authorized the 2020 CARES Act. In that case, adults received direct payments of $1,200 and $500 for their dependent children. Hawley introduces bill to provide $600 tariff rebates to adults and children Unlike those payments, these rebates would serve to offset the higher prices consumers have faced amid tariffs. According to Hawley, the U.S. has recorded $30 billion in tariff revenue as of June. He cited additional projections that say the revenue could exceed $150 billion this year alone. Under Hawley's bill, however, the individual payments would be much smaller. How much would the tariff rebates be? Each adult would receive 'at least $600,' as would each dependent child. The total rebate for a DINK (dual income, no kids) household, for example, would be at least $1,200, while a family of four could receive $2,400. Payments could increase 'if tariff revenue exceeds current projections for 2025,' according to a press release from Hawley's office describing the proposed legislation. Who will — and won't — have a three-payday August Payments would also decrease based on household income. The bill's text says rebates would be reduced based on a taxpayer's filing status and their adjusted gross income. That income threshold is $150,000 for those filing a joint return; $112,500 for those filing as a head of household; and $75,000 for a single taxpayer. Who would be eligible for a payment? Hawley's bill does not explicitly outline who would be eligible, but rather who is ineligible. That includes: 'any nonresident alien individual'; those who can be claimed on another taxpayer's taxes; and estates or trusts. As we saw with the COVID stimulus checks, your most recent taxes would likely be used to determine your eligibility and the size of your payment. When could tariff rebates be sent out? It's too early to say, as Hawley's bill would still need to make it through Congress. President Donald Trump has expressed support for the idea, telling reporters last week that the U.S. has 'so much money coming in' because of the tariffs that 'we're thinking about a little rebate.' 'A little rebate for people of a certain income level might be very nice,' he said, while noting that 'the big thing we want to do is pay down the debt.'
