Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner dies by drowning at 54, Entertainment News
Warner was vacationing in Costa Rica with his family, media reported. The Central American nation's judicial investigation department (OIJ) confirmed that a US citizen with the last name Warner had drowned after being pulled out to sea by a rip current.
He was declared lifeless at the scene by Red Cross lifeguards, the department said.
Representatives for Warner did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The NAACP posted a photo of the late actor on Instagram along with a caption.
"#RestinPower, to NAACP Image Award winning actor, Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Your talent and spirit touched many lives, and your legacy will continue to inspire," the caption said.
Warner won the outstanding actor in a comedy series award from the NAACP for the series Reed Between the Lines in 2012.
Fox Entertainment also issued a statement on Monday about Warner's passing.
"Everyone at FOX is heartbroken by the tragic loss of our friend and colleague, the extraordinary Malcolm-Jamal Warner. While his iconic roles — from comedic to dramatic — are unforgettable and timeless," the statement said. Warner played Dr. AJ Austin on the Fox medical drama series The Resident.
The Cosby Show, which aired from 1984 to 1992, was one of the earliest portrayals of a successful, stable and wholesome Black American family on television, which challenged negative stereotypes. Cosby portrayed a doctor, and Warner played his only son.
Warner, who was born on Aug 18, 1970, grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey, with his mother, Pamela, who eventually became his acting manager. He was named after civil rights leader Malcolm X and jazz musician Ahmad Jamal.
At an early age, Warner found he was interested in acting, which launched his career as a child performer and set him on the path to attend The Professional Children's School in New York.
While he had some small television roles early in his career, playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show served as Warner's breakout role.
The actor received an Emmy nomination in 1986 for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for his role on the NBC series. Warner won a Grammy award in 2015 for best traditional R&B performance for the song Jesus Children.
The 54-year-old actor also had roles in The Cosby Show spin-off series A Different World, Jeremiah, Sons of Anarchy, Suits and hosted Saturday Night Live in 1986.
He has a wife and daughter but never publicly disclosed their names.

'I grew up watching him', says Ahn Hyo-seop on acting with Lee Min-ho in Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy , Entertainment News
South Korean actor Ahn Hyo-seop is making his debut on the big screens with the new movie Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy, and during a press conference at Sands Expo & Convention Centre today (July 29), he said he's a fan of co-star Lee Min-ho. "It was really easy to act throughout the filming process because like how (my character) Kim Dok-ja admires and idolises (Min-ho's character) Yu Jung-hyeok, I feel the same about Min-ho. I grew up watching him act and watching his projects, so I was already his fan," said 30-year-old Hyo-seop. Dok-ja is an ordinary office worker and the only devoted reader of a little-known web novel. When the story's fictional apocalyptic world comes to life and its omnipotent hero Jung-hyeok appears before him, Dok-ja must use his knowledge of the story to write a new ending. Besides the two actors, director Kim Byung-woo is also here. Here come Lee Min-ho and Ahn Hyo-seop for the Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy.#LeeMinHo #AhnHyoSeop #OmniscientReader_TheProphet — AsiaOne (@asiaonecom) July 29, 2025 Singapore marks their first and only international promotional stop outside of South Korea. In the movie, Dok-ja is described as a "plain-looking person", and the host quipped that Hyo-seop isn't, asking if it was difficult to portray such a character. Laughing and shaking his head, he humbly said: "I don't think I'm that outstanding. Since the story talks about being ordinary, it made me question, 'What is being ordinary like in the world?' There are people who are tall, but there are also those who are short. "Some have prominent faces while others have plain ones. So, I was questioning myself, 'Who am I? Where do I belong?'" He concluded that he's ordinary: "If I consider myself outstanding or special, I thought that I wouldn't be able to start filming this movie." [[nid:720752]] Meanwhile, Jung-hyeok is described as someone with an "outstanding and beautiful face", and Min-ho, 38, said that's the hardest part about playing his character. "I believe that people should be defined by their internal self... I'm a very ordinary person internally, so knowing that, it was difficult to portray such an extraordinary character." Which character would Hyo-seop and Min-ho ally with if fiction became reality? Both of them chose machine gun-wielding Lee Ji-hye, because she's played by Blackpink's Jisoo. "Instead of using her weapon, I'll listen to her song. Her music will become the strongest power," Min-ho joked. Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy, which also stars Chae Soo-bin, Shin Seung-ho, Nana, and child actor Kwon Eun-seong, opens in Singapore cinemas on July 31. Hyo-seop, Min-ho and Byung-woo will make appearances at special screenings held at Golden Village Suntec City and Golden Village VivoCity today. Tickets are sold out. Alleged 'Hollywood Con Queen' loses fight against extradition from UK to US
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox A gavel and a block is pictured at the George Glazer Gallery antique store in this illustration picture taken in Manhattan, New York City, U.S., August 18, 2020. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/Illustration LONDON - An Indonesian national dubbed the "Hollywood Con Queen" by the media for allegedly impersonating top female movie industry executives in a seven-year fraud on Tuesday lost his bid to block his extradition from Britain to stand trial in the U.S. Hargobind Tahilramani is wanted in California on charges of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for allegedly defrauding around 300 people out of a total of approximately $1 million between 2013 and 2020. The 45-year-old is accused of tricking people into travelling to Indonesia and paying exorbitant fees for non-existent film work, before he was arrested in a hotel in Manchester, England, in November 2020. Tahilramani's extradition was approved by a judge and then British ministers in 2023, but he challenged the decision to send him to the U.S. to stand trial, arguing prison conditions would breach his human rights due to his mental health. His lawyer Edward Fitzgerald told London's High Court in April that Tahilramani, who has applied for asylum in Britain, was also at risk of being attacked in prison as a gay man. Fitzgerald said this meant Tahilramani was likely to be held in isolation while in pre-trial detention, which put him at high risk of suicide given his underlying mental health issues. But Tahilramani's appeal was dismissed by Judge Derek Sweeting, who said in a written ruling that the lower court was not wrong when it ordered his extradition to stand trial. REUTERS
