Box Office: Lilo and Stitch crushes rivals with USD 63M second weekend, global gross past 600 million
The live-action animated hybrid, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and produced by the aforementioned studio, has now amassed USD 280 million domestically. The strong performance places Lilo & Stitch as the second-biggest second Friday earner of all time for a Memorial Day release, trailing only Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick (USD 90 million, -28.9 percent). It edges past several major tentpoles in the same category, including Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (USD 44.8 million), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (USD 44.3 million), and Aladdin (USD 42.8 million).
After its May 17 premiere at the El Capitan Theatre and wide release on May 23, Lilo & Stitch surged ahead with strong family turnout and millennial support, who rode the nostalgia wave. A reimagining of the beloved 2002 animated classic, the 2025 version stars newcomer Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelekai, with original director Chris Sanders returning to voice the blue alien dog Stitch.

On August 18, Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's film crossed the USD 6 million milestone, meaning it added nearly a million dollars in just 13 days – a rare feat that highlights its consistent pull despite stiff competition. In the North American rankings, Saiyaara now sits at No. 3 among Indian films. Leading the chart is Chhaava, the historical epic starring Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna, and Akshaye Khanna, which stands at USD 6.4 million, followed closely by Rajinikanth's Coolie at USD 6.22 million. I thought, let me give him some solution—in the sense, provide some actors and known names who would back me and make this film. I so badly wanted to make this film," he explained. The filmmaker admitted that his original vision was to work with newcomers, but market realities made him doubt the decision. 'When I wanted approval, I said okay, I have this list of actors who are willing to do this film with me. I wrote it for new people but I really want to make this film. I don't know in this market who will put in this much money to make it with new people," he continued. That's when Aditya Chopra stepped in with a bold perspective. Coolie suffered a sharp decline in business on Monday, managing to collect only Rs. 13 crore approx in India. This takes the five-day total of the Rajinikanth starrer to Rs. 239 crore approx. Overseas markets mirrored the domestic trend with a sharp fall, as the film grossed only USD 450K on day five, lifting the worldwide cume to Rs. 389 crore approx. The cracks were there to see during the weekend as some of the territories saw a drop in collections on Saturday and Sunday. Even Tamil Nadu wasn't hitting the levels it could have with the holiday support. On Monday, those cracks widened, with collections in Tamil Nadu collapsing as well. The bigger concern for the film is Tuesday advances, which are significantly down from Monday. If this trend continues, the film could slip into a freefall. The film topped the Rs. 100 crore mark in Tamil Nadu on its fifth day yesterday. This is the fourth Rajinikanth film to cross the century mark in the state and his fastest yet. Although Rs. 100 crore isn't what it used to be in the late 2010s, the bar has now moved up to Rs. 200 crore.
