In Ghaziabad, DM Ravindra Kumar Mandar urged citizens to adopt indigenous products for self-reliance and balance economic growth with environmental conservation.
"The more we use products made in our own country, the more self-reliant India will become," he said.
The DM also honoured the President's Medal awardee, Dr Sujeet Kumar Prasad, for his 22 years of service and bravery in the Civil Defence unit. Jaswant Saini, minister of state in the UP govt, was also present at the event and praised Sujeet's role in public safety.

In Gautam Budh Nagar, DM Medha Roopam addressed the gathering of district officials.
"This day fills us with pride, but it also reminds us of our duties. Along with our rights, we must protect national unity, follow the law, and serve society," she said.
A celebration was also held at Noida's Panchsheel Balak Inter College, where Saini was the chief guest. He planted trees under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign and honoured the families of martyrs. "We can never repay the debt of our martyrs, but building the India of their dreams will be a true tribute," he said. He called on citizens to support indigenous entrepreneurs and embrace the Vocal for Local movement.
The celebrations also included cultural performances from several schools and a Tiranga Mela, showcasing products made by women's self-help groups, which attracted strong public interest.

The Congress on Saturday demanded broader deliberations on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) 2.0 announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address. The opposition party criticised the existing framework for enabling evasion and called for a drastic cut in the number of tax slabs. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh. He pressed for a simplified rate structure that reduces revenue uncertainty for states. His remarks came a day after Modi unveiled plans for a sweeping overhaul of the GST regime, hinting at lower rates on most items by Diwali. According to people aware of the blueprint, most goods taxed at 12% could drop to 5%, while several currently under the 28% bracket may shift to 18%. A 40% slab is being considered for luxury and sin goods. Ramesh further recommended extending the GST compensation cess, set to expire next year, to cushion states against revenue shocks from rate rationalisation. He also called for incentivising states to bring electricity, alcohol, petroleum and real estate under the GST net. Raising concerns of the MSME sector, Ramesh stressed the need for meaningful redressal, along with targeted reforms in textiles, tourism, and exports. 'Apart from major procedural changes, this will involve further increasing the thresholds that must apply to interstate supplies as well,' he said. 'The Indian National Congress demands an official discussion paper on GST 2.0 very soon so that there can be an informed and wider debate on this vital and pressing national issue. GST 2.0 should be truly a Good and Simple Tax in letter, spirit and compliance – not like a Growth Suppressing Tax it has become,' Ramesh added.

GST Reforms To Increase Disposable Income Of Consumers: Expert
New Delhi: The government's plan to overhaul the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure will give Indian consumers more disposable income, potentially boosting demand and overall consumption in the economy, said Najib Shah, former Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) on Saturday. The Central government has mulled reducing the current four-slab structure into two primary rates -- 5 per cent and 18 per cent -- while introducing a special 40 per cent slab for luxury and sin goods. The proposal came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, said that the next generation reforms in GST will be unveiled by Diwali, which will provide "substantial" tax relief to the common man and benefit small businesses. (Also Read: SBI Offers Exclusive Personal Loan Up To Rs 4 Lakh For Agniveers) In an interaction with IANS, Najib Shah suggested that 'current slabs could be merged into new slabs -- 5 per cent slab with 12 per cent slab merged into a middle slab of roughly 7-8 per cent'. 'The 12 per cent with 18 per cent can be merged into a 15-16 per cent slab, and the 28 per cent rate possibly moving to 30 per cent once the cess is removed in March 2026,' he added. Shah said that the reduced multiplicity of rates and lower tax slabs should leave more disposable income with consumers, potentially boosting demand and overall consumption in the economy. The expert noted that 'GST reforms should lead to lower prices, smoother credit flow, resolution of tax inversion issues, and reduced disputes, ultimately cutting costs for producers and consumers alike'. Government collections should not be adversely affected while still offering relief to consumers. Further, small and medium enterprises stand to gain significantly from simplified tax rates, lower compliance burdens, and improved access to seamless credit within the GST framework. Calling the GST reforms 'long overdue', Shah told IANS that he sees them as 'a transformative step that will strengthen the tax system, stimulate growth, and reinforce India's position as a prime investment destination'. As per the government proposal, likely, around 99 per cent of items currently taxed at 12 per cent are expected to shift to the 5 per cent bracket, while 90 per cent of goods in the 28 per cent slab, including white goods, will move to 18 per cent. "Finalising these new rates will require crucial GST Council meetings, followed by GST Network readiness to ensure smooth and seamless execution nationwide," Shah said. Shah also exuded optimism at S&P's and RBI's positive outlook on India's stable GDP growth projection of 6.5 per cent, the highest among major economies. "While US tariffs could affect certain labour-intensive exports, their overall impact on GDP will be minimal as exports to the US constitute only about 2 per cent of India's economy," he told IANS. India must seek alternative export destinations and enhance competitiveness to offset any impact from US tariffs, supported by targeted policy measures. India's multiple FTAs and CEPAs -- UK already finalised and EU nearing completion -- will not only reduce trade barriers but also attract significant foreign investment, he noted.

Condemning distortion of history, CM Pinarayi Vijayan slams PM's Independence Day speech
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Condemning what he termed a calculated distortion of history, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for using his Independence Day address to glorify RSS and V D Savarkar. 'The attempt to portray the RSS, which was banned following Gandhi's assassination and V D Savarkar, who stood trial in the murder conspiracy, as major contributors of Indian independence is a blatant distortion of history. Choosing Independence Day to glorify those who served the British amounts to insulting our freedom struggle,' said the chief minister. Pinarayi Vijayan said no such shameful act can whitewash the RSS, which he described as a communal organisation with a divisive past. He called the Prime Minister's act of praising the RSS on a day that symbolises national unity 'show of contempt for the very day'. Citing the Union Ministry of Petroleum's Independence Day greeting card that placed Savarkar's image above Mahatma Gandhi's, the CM said this was part of a larger conspiracy. 'This anxiety comes from fear of the true history of India's freedom struggle,' he said. He recalled that India's independence movement was one that saw people of every caste, religion, language, and culture standing together. 'In contrast, the RSS wore the cloak of espionage,' he added.
