Meet the two Indian Army generals who were promoted as field marshal
Pakistan's Army chief General Asim Munir has been promoted to the rank of field marshal for his apparent role in the recent India-Pakistan conflict. This move made him the second senior military officer in Pakistan to be promoted to the position. In India, the rank of field marshal has been conferred to only two officers until now: Sam Manekshaw in 1973 and Kodandera M Cariappa in 1986.
Field marshal Sam Maneskshaw was conferred this rank in recognition of his service and leadership in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. Born, 1914 in Amritsar to a Parsi family, Manekshaw was also known as 'Sam Bahadur'.
After he completed his higher command course at the Imperial Defence College, Manekshaw was appointed the general officer commanding of the 26th Infantry Division. He was the first Indian field marshal, which is the highest rank in the Indian Army.
His extraordinary leadership in the Indo-Pak war led to the creation of Bangladesh, in which his strategic brilliance proved instrumental for India's victory. In 1968, Manekshaw was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third highest civillian honour for his response to the Nagalan and Mizoram insurgencies. In 2008 he died due to a progressive lung disease.
The first Indian commander-in-chief of the Indian Army was field marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa was the first Indian commander-in-chief and assumed position in 1949. While he is credited with many firsts, he had an instrumental role in the transition of the Indian military from colonial to independent India. Born into a family of farmers in Coorg province, his family called him 'Chimma'.
After independence, Cariappa took the role of deputy chief of general staff and organised three successive attacks. The attacks were aimed at reclaiming the strategic areas of Naushera, Jhangar, Poonch, Zoji La, Dras, and Kargil.
Cariappa was the first Indian officer to attend the Staff College, Quetta, and was later commanded the 1/7 Rajputs, making him the first Indian to lead a battalion. His career of three decades came to an end when he passed away on May 15, 1993.

2,158 artistes receive postal accident insurance in single day
Mangaluru: During the Yakshadhruva Patla Decennial Celebration 2025, held under the auspices of the Yakshadhruva Patla Foundation Trust at Adyar Garden on Sunday, 2,158 artistes from Yakshagana, theatre, Daivaradhane, and achievers in kambala were provided with postal accident insurance, ensuring coverage of Rs 10 lakh each for their families. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The insurance premium was sponsored by the Patla Foundation, and around 150 staff members from the Mangaluru postal division conducted the event with great discipline and coordination, stated a release from the Mangaluru Postal Division. For the past three years, the department of posts actively participated in the public service of Yaksha Sambhrama, and this year it set a new record by providing this facility to 2,158 artistes in a single day. A special feature was that all these artistes received their policy bonds printed on-site. This postal accident insurance is a service offered by the Indian postal department, India Post Payments Bank, and Reliance Insurance Company. For an annual premium of just Rs 550, it provides coverage of Rs 10 lakh, along with benefits like inpatient/outpatient treatment and reimbursement of educational expenses. This year, the Yakshadhruva Patla Foundation Trust sponsored this facility for artistes at a cost of approximately Rs 11.9 lakh. The Patla Foundation organised several schemes for the welfare of artistrs, and the postal accident insurance scheme was widely appreciated. For the third consecutive year, the responsibility of conducting this initiative was entrusted to the fepartment by the yrust's gounder President, Patla Satish Shetty. He was honoured by denior duperintendent M Sudhakar Mallya on behalf of the Mangaluru postal division. Claims for compensation of Rs 10 lakh are in process for the families of three artistes who died in accidents, the release added.

158 Agniveers pass out from 14 Gorkha Training Centre in Subathu
Subathu (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 5 (ANI): A strength of 158 Agniveers passed out in an impressive Passing Out Parade at the historical Salaria Stadium of 14 Gorkha Training Centre in Subathu, an official release said on Thursday. The recruits, who swore allegiance to the Indian Republic, underwent rigorous training for over 31 weeks in various aspects of physical fitness, battle and field craft, weapons, and tactics. As per the release, the Agniveers would now be joining the Gorkha Battalions of First and Fourth Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army, having a rich and glorious military history of over 200 years of valour and sacrifice. Brigadier Puneet Sharma, Commandant 14 Gorkha Training Centre reviewed the parade. He also addressed the parade, wherein he motivated all the recruits to keep the National and Indian Army flag flying high across all frontiers of the Country. The parade was followed by a melodious Pipe Band display of martial music with excellent synchronisation. The function concluded with a breath-taking Physical Training Display that left the spectators awe-inspired. More than 300 serving persons, Ex-Servicemen, parents, and relatives of Agniveers graced the event. Earlier today, the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAK LI) Regiment Centre in Srinagar held the Passing Out Parade (POP) of its fifth batch of Agniveers, marking the induction of 326 recruits into the Indian Army. The newly inducted Agniveers completed 31 weeks of physical, mental, and tactical training before marching in unison during the attestation ceremony. Senior Army officers, instructors, and recruits' family members attended the event. The Reviewing Officer, a senior Army official, congratulated the newly inducted soldiers and encouraged them to uphold the rich legacy of the JAK LI Regiment with unwavering commitment and courage. Kanniyakumari collector holds meeting with Indian maritime experts
Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena convened a meeting with Indian maritime experts at the district collectorate on Wednesday, regarding the impacts on the Arabian sea following the sinking of a cargo vessel off the Kochi coast. Speaking at the meeting the collector noted that the district comprises 42 coastal villages spread across a coastline of 71.05 km. Since May 27, debris including the plastic pellets (nurdles) , wooden logs, cashew nuts, iron rods have been washing ashore in the several coastal villages of Kanniyakumari district. Following the guidelines provided by Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, officials from the departments of Pollution Control Board, Revenue, Fisheries, Fire and Rescue service have been actively involved in clearing the debris along the coastline. The collected materials are safely stored at respective block and municipal offices. The collector also mentioned that she had conducted discussions with coastal police officials from Gujarat, as well as the Gujarat based agency engaged in debris clearance operations along the coast. In line with this, a meeting was held with maritime experts and officials of insurance company to assess the impacts in the Arabian sea region. During the meeting the collector also sought information regarding the procedures involved in rescue operations of the sunken cargo vessel MSC ELSA 3.
