Apec says ‘concerned' over challenges to global trade

JEJU : The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) group said today that it was 'concerned' over the challenges to global trade, as ministers from Apec countries met in South Korea in the shadow of growing woes from US tariffs.
Trade ministers from the top economies that make up Apec are meeting on South Korea's Jeju Island amid concerns for the global trading system since US President Donald Trump unveiled bombshell levies on most partners.
The US is a key Apec member and was represented by trade representative Jamieson Greer, who held a series of bilateral meetings with nations eager to soften the blow of Washington's tariffs.
'We are concerned with the fundamental challenges faced by the global trading system,' trade ministers from the 21-member group said in a joint statement.
They urged greater cooperation, saying they 'remain committed' to Apec as a means of 'bringing us together to address the economic challenges facing our region'.
South Korea's trade minister Cheong In-Kyo said the joint statement was hard-won, with 'significant differences' in positions clear early on in the talks.
However, at the last minute, the countries 'dramatically' reached an agreement, he said, with the Apec emphasising the importance of global trading mechanisms such as the World Trade Organisation (WTO), as well as sustainable supply chains.
This 'sends a highly positive signal to global markets', he said, adding that 'Apec members can work together to navigate the current highly uncertain global trade environment effectively'.
No joint response to US
Cheong said there had been no discussion of 'joint responses' to US tariffs, saying it was not possible as 'each country faces significantly different circumstances'.
South Korea recorded a US$66 billion trade surplus with the US last year – behind only Vietnam, Taiwan, and Japan — making it a key target of Trump's trade tirade.
Highly dependent on exports, the country has been hit hard by the 25% tariffs on automobiles imposed by Trump in early April.
The auto industry accounts for 27% of South Korea's exports to the US, which takes in nearly half of the country's car exports.
Trump announced additional 'reciprocal' tariffs of up to 25% on South Korean exports last month, but later suspended them until early July.
Seoul aims to leverage the talks with commitments to purchase more US liquefied natural gas (LNG) and offer support in shipbuilding, a sector in which South Korea is a leader, after China.
Earlier Friday, Greer met Chung Ki-sun, the vice chairman of HD Hyundai, which owns South Korea's country's largest shipbuilding company.
HD Hyundai said in a statement that discussions covered cooperation with US shipmaker Huntington Ingalls Industries.
Greer is also set to meet the CEO of South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean, which provides maintenance, repair and overhaul services for US Navy vessels.
Shares of Hanwha Ocean rose nearly 3% this morning, while HD Hyundai Heavy Industries gained as much as 3.6%.

When asked about their preferred sick days, the top choices were Mondays (43%), after long holidays (25%), Fridays (24%), the day after working overtime (24%), and rainy or cold days (18%). (See Table 1)Sleep problems top the list of modern-day work-life struggles. Among respondents, 64% reported trouble falling asleep, and a significant 81% said they wake up easily. Almost 60% experience both sleep problems simultaneously. However, 77% said they lack effective methods to address both sleep problems at once. A full 80% expressed a desire for dual action release Dr. Ka Yau Wong, Raymond explained: "Difficulty falling asleep and waking easily are two different sleep disorders. Difficulty falling asleep is usually stress-related, while waking easily may be linked to melatonin levels. Melatonin is only released in the dark, its production decreases with daylight or screen exposure. Dual action release melatonin supplements can provide extended support by releasing melatonin in two phases, helping the body fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Prolonged avoidance of stress without proper relief could worsen the condition, increasing the risk of anxiety, depression, and further deterioration in sleep quality."With nearly 60% experiencing both difficulty falling asleep and waking easily, 85% of respondents said they are looking for long-lasting sleep solutions. Registered pharmacist Mr. Ian Cheung advised: "Those dealing with dual insomnia problems may benefit from melatonin supplements with a 'dual action release' formula for comprehensive effect. Petronas announces 5,000 jobs to get the axe as profits shrink, no hiring till 2026
KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — Petronas will cut about 10 per cent of its workforce as part of a major restructuring to reduce costs amid falling crude oil prices, financial news agency Bloomberg reported today. The state-owned oil and gas company plans to cut more than 5,000 jobs, CEO Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz said in a media briefing here. 'All those affected will be informed by the end of the year,' he was quoted as saying. He added that Petronas will also freeze all promotions and hiring until December 2026. 'The margins are shrinking, the fields are getting smaller. 'It will be challenging to meet dividend targets' with current oil prices, he added. Petronas contributes to some 10 per cent of Malaysia's revenue in 2024 through dividends and taxes. Tengku Taufik said Petronas had based its budget on Brent oil prices at around US$75 to US$80 per barrel. According to Bloomberg, the global benchmark is currently hovering near US$65 per barrel. Prices have fallen about 13 per cent this year as trade tensions weigh on global growth and OPEC+ increases production. Petronas' net income dropped 32 per cent in 2024, after a 21 per cent decline in 2023.
