Syria and Israel Agree to Ceasefire After Week of Bloodshed in Sweida

A fragile ceasefire has been reached between Syria and Israel following days of deadly violence in Syria's southwestern Sweida province, U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye Tom Barrack announced early Saturday.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Barrack said the ceasefire was 'supported by the United States' and 'welcomed' by Türkiye, Jordan, and Syria's neighbouring countries. The announcement comes amid escalating clashes and airstrikes that have shaken the Druze-majority region.
According to Syria's Interior Ministry, security forces have now begun deploying in Sweida with the goal of protecting civilians and restoring order. Ministry spokesperson Noureddine al-Baba stated on Telegram, 'Internal security forces have begun deploying in Sweida province... to protect civilians and put an end to the chaos.'
The violence, described as one of the deadliest in the region in recent years, has claimed at least 718 lives since last Sunday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Among the dead are 146 Druze fighters, 245 civilians—165 of whom were allegedly executed by Syrian security personnel—287 government troops, and 18 Bedouin fighters. The Observatory also reported that three Bedouins were executed by Druze fighters in retaliation.
The conflict has also been complicated by Israeli airstrikes, which reportedly killed 15 more Syrian soldiers during the escalation.
While the ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope for a pause in violence, the situation remains tense, and the humanitarian toll continues to rise.

In visits to Zallaq and Budaiya, His Excellency General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior and Chairman of the National Plan Follow-up Committee, met with residents, listened to local concerns, and delivered greetings from the Kingdom's leadership. Identity and values The meetings were praised as an example of national unity and practical engagement. Many described them as a clear signal that the Ministry values direct input from the public in shaping national priorities. Municipal Council member Mohammed Saad Al-Dosari said the visit helped highlight issues such as youth protection and the need for more development projects. Protecting the next generation Mohammed Wajdi Al-Dosari from Al-Budaiya Club said residents raised several key concerns, including calls for upgraded public facilities and improved opportunities for young people. He noted that the Minister responded positively. Salman Al Ghatam from Zallaq pointed to the Interior Ministry's cooperation with local youth centres in guiding young people and encouraging positive behaviour. The visits showed how Bahrain's national identity, public security, and youth priorities are being shaped not just by policy, but through continued dialogue between citizens and those who serve them.

Israeli rights groups brand Gaza campaign ‘genocide'

Rights groups B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel said on Monday that they had concluded the war in Gaza amounts to a 'genocide' against Palestinians, a first for Israeli NGOs. Both organisations are frequent critics of Israeli government policies, but the language in their reports issued on Monday was their most stark yet. 'Nothing prepares you for the realisation that you are part of a society committing genocide. This is a deeply painful moment for us,' B'Tselem executive director Yuli Novak told a news conference unveiling the two reports. 'As Israelis and Palestinians who live here and witness the reality every day, we have a duty to speak the truth as clearly as possible,' she said. 'Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians.' A spokesman from the Israeli prime minister's office, David Mencer, denounced the allegation. 'We have free speech here in Israel but we strongly reject the accusation,' he said. 'Our defence forces target terrorists and never civilians. Hamas is responsible for the suffering in Gaza.' Israel's war in Gaza for the past 21 months began in response to an unprecedented attack by Palestinian group Hamas on October 7, 2023. The Israeli assault has left much of the Gaza Strip, home to more than two million Palestinians, in ruins, and according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry has killed at least 59,921 people, most of them civilians. All Gazans have been driven from their homes at least once since the start of the war, and UN agencies warn that residents face a growing threat of famine and malnutrition. The International Court of Justice, in an interim ruling in early 2024 in a case lodged by South Africa, found it 'plausible' that the Israeli offensive had violated the UN Genocide Convention. The Israeli government, backed by the United States, fiercely denies the charge and says it is fighting to defeat Hamas and to bring back Israeli hostages still held inGaza. The reports from B'Tselem-- one of Israel's best-knownrights groups -- and Physiciansfor Human Rights Israel argue that the war's objectives gofurther. B'Tselem's report cites statements from senior politicians toillustrate that Israel 'is takingcoordinated action to intentionally destroy Palestinian society inthe Gaza Strip'. Physicians for Human RightsIsrael's report documents whatthe group says is 'the deliberate and systematic destruction ofGaza's healthcare system'. Gaza civil defence says Israeli fire kills 16 Gaza's civil defence agency said16 people were killed by Israelifire Monday in the Palestinianterritory devastated by more than21 months of war. Agency spokesman MahmudBassal told AFP the dead includedfive people killed in an overnightstrike on a residential buildingin the southern Gaza district ofAl-Mawasi. A pregnant woman was amongthose killed, the Palestinian RedCrescent said, adding its teamssaved the woman's foetus by performing a Caesarean section in afield hospital. Israel designated Al-Mawasi, acoastal area west of the southerncity of Khan Yunis, as a humanitarian zone in the early monthsof the war. Despite that designation, it hascontinued to be hit by air strikesand now shelters a large share ofGaza's displaced people.

Bahrain Joins WEF

TDT | Manama Bahrain has joined a global initiative led by the World Economic Forum to help countries develop national space strategies that are sustainable, future-oriented, and aligned with international developments. The Bahrain Space Agency (BSA) confirmed its participation in the WEF's 'Space for National Strategy' initiative, which brings together policymakers, experts, and industry leaders to guide countries in building efficient space policy frameworks. The move reflects Bahrain's growing focus on strengthening its space capabilities through responsible governance and strategic partnerships. The initiative aims to provide governments with a structured policy design toolkit to shape national space efforts. The toolkit covers practical approaches to building or refining a country's space policy, including areas such as regulation, governance, sustainability, and commercial engagement. By joining this platform, Bahrain seeks to deepen its national policy alignment with global standards, support its ambitions in satellite technology and data applications, and contribute to international discussions on space sector governance. The BSA's involvement also highlights the Kingdom's intent to reinforce its position within the global space ecosystem. It aligns with Bahrain's broader objectives to diversify its economy and build strategic capabilities in science, technology, and innovation. Through this partnership, the BSA will engage with a network of institutions that includes leading national space agencies and companies working at the forefront of the sector. The collaboration is expected to offer insights into best practices and help Bahrain tailor its strategy to support national development goals. The agency reiterated its commitment to advancing space activities in line with Bahrain's vision and emphasised the importance of global cooperation in shaping responsible and impactful space policies.
